I dropped by the fab shop last night to check on the progress of the bed rack to mount my RTT on. It’s coming along nicely!

Tell more!!

I posted the details under the thread "My Quest for Early FJ40 Bench Seat Headrests." Since posting that, I "adjusted" the rest so that it tilts forward an inch or so that it tilts forward and is positioned closer to the head than it did before.

Now that I'm done with my mod, I'm sure I'll get all kinds of leads where I can buy the latch assembly. Short story, mine is wore out and won't stay closed. Previous owners tried all kinds of fly by night repairs with no success. My mod was out of necessity.

Finally wrapped up the clutch job, rear main, oil pan gasket, oil cooler rebuild, rear third replacement and locker, gas tank and fuel line 41 year service and floor pan overhaul. Ready for Katempcy next weekend.

@Racer65 sells some of the parts needed.

Mine latches to the right/towards the passenger side. City Racer's latches to the left/drivers side. I've bought two (2) different sets of latches and both were wrong. I then wised up and started asking specifically which side the latch locked into. Turns out that my particular style latch was only made for one year, thus the difficulty in sourcing any.

Looks like a 75... good luck in your search.

Some of the off-road shops sell an adjustable latch which could be used to repair/replace yours if it comes to it.

Nothing like the spare swinging in the wind as you drive down the road.

I used a spring to slip over the handle to keep it in place. It finally got so worn that, that didn't help so I finally built up the worn spots with the wire feed and ground it to fit.

The hook part is a tiny bit longer making it so tight I have use my foot to close it but with the repair and spring haven't had a swinging spare for years.

Finished up my 60 series power steering conversion yesterday. Drives great and I am very happy with the results. Unfortunately the power steering pump has a bad bushing and is leaking fluid. Guess that's what I get for buying used parts. Anyone know where I can get a new OEM pump for a reasonable price? I've heard the rebuilt ones don't last long so I'm trying to avoid rebuilding the one I have. Thanks mud! :)

Not sure if you want to stay all toyota but georg at valley hybrids has a sweet saginaw pump conversion available. Some of the gurus like the sag pump better than oem 60 because they last longer, are cheaper and have a stronger output.

nice way to think out of the box...

take the bracket off and weld it up where it has warn on the latch, then take a dremel or die grinder to it and re shape it so it latches properly, the main problem is the latch getting loose and not locking fully... its good if you have one thats not warn out to copy what the shape should be from..

I feel your pain with the limited use of the drivers side plate carriers! I don't have the catch portion on mine at all (that mounts to the rear sill). The only replacement ive found so far is a new one made by BTB

But since you have yours you could probably do some filler welds and grinding/shaping to keep the orginal
