Finally got going on my winter project of fabricating jump seat bottoms and legs to go with the backs donated by member 'erics'.

7.00-15 STA Super Traxion, bias ply. Got them from Summit Racing - Coker Vintage Truck and Military Tires 59132
How do they run on the road? Road noise at 55?
I see that they are 30" tires. I have some really good 63 rims I was thinking of using on my 78, but realized they were 5.0 - 5.5". I was looking at the BFG All Terrain T/A KO2 tires which take at least a 7" rim so I thought well there goes that idea. Maybe the Coker tires would fit the bill?
Thanks for posting!

I’ve run 20 sets of 10.5” wide tires on stock wheels. Not an issue.

That said I run 700-15 bias like those above on 2 of my Cruisers.

I love them but they are noisy.

At 55?? Ain't got that fast yet. Soon, but not yet. I don't expect them to be quiet, though.

Plenty of people run 10.5" tires on stock 5.5" wheels. (I personally don't like it, blame it on 20+ years selling tires back in the day.) But even if you decide to do it, don't use the '63 rims. Those would be riveted, type-type wheels. Use later welded tubeless instead.

I’d love to have just that part of a soft top frame for a bikini top
And I am slowly gathering all the rest of it for a full factory style soft top. Not there yet...

Just recently there was a thread here about a member who was having an issue with his tires crowning because of using the smaller stock rims with today's all terrain tires, I also saw on BFG's website that 265/75/15 All Terrain T/A KO2 tires take a minimum 7 inch rim and maximum of 8.5".
Not questioning your experience, if you have run that many tires on stock rims. Sometimes I wonder why there's so many conflicting descriptions about a product?!

I didn't know there was a difference with the 63 rims, good to know, they are my only oem rims but I have three sets of spoked and all at least 7" wide, I'll just stay with the spoked
I run at least 55 all the time on good highways, 78 2F Aisan 4 speed.

Oh, I’ll get it to 55, once I get it registered and insured. Probably next week. Until then, I’ve just been tooling around my neighborhood.

I don't know, if you're stock, 55 is pushing that F135, one barrel carburetor, three speed pretty hard you may have to find a big hill.:)

Greetings FJ40 been up in stands since 2010 and just started really getting into research for putting it back together. Tire were shot by heat and dry rotting anyway so I didn't want it in the ground

When a while but I finally installed the fj55 rear end and it is a pita without help but do-able... just hate getting up, getting down ,jacking up, jacking*** you get the picture (I hope they attach)

Put on the new rear shock studs in the same area the older 68 rear ended I had had them in. So now asmibput the rear end up I installed the last of the u-bolts skids since I've had them so long collecting dust.. input the front one one as well still looking for the other skid

I have a rear disk conversion... the whole 72 Monte Carlo thing but didn't put it on yet. And I have the rear eaton full Detroit locker but that will be done by a pro not me.

Going to see ifnincan at least salvage the hard brake lines from the 68 if I can even use em one day for the 72. Have to remove the sway bar connwction and hook up the extended breather for the axle and put the flexible brake line back on... then off to do the transmission swap. I really wish I had the 5 speed or something that would put this vehicle in a power range I can use. I have a 350 in it but can feel it just has more power to give after its in 3rd and that's my last gear in it.

Will let you know when the transmission is in... only thing for that is needed is taking the vacuum transfer off it... and putting my manual transfer on it. Hopefully it all works out.

Got a bit further with the '79 top. Sanding and cleaning out the rain gutters...check. Found a few weak/low spots and am strategically adding some filler. Spoke with the owner at the local LineX shop and he is going to mix some pure white and almond white to get me as close as possible to 031 Cygnus white. Cool part is I can paint over it down the road if the UV inhibitor gives up and it shifts yellow. Going to do the top and bezel to match. I am hoping that the LineX will be a bit of a hail beater!! Hope to get a call from the media blaster Monday, so i can pick up the sides, doors, and other bits necessary to get this top painted and ready to install. Now time to drop some serious coin on weatherstripping...yikes!!! Rubbers sure have gotten expensive!!

Added some simple qualify of life updates -
  • LED backlight for gauge cluster
  • Tied tach light to parking light/headlight switch
  • Toggle-able LED strip to illuminate dash switches/floor
  • Painted the steelies back to black - maybe the start of a full de-chromeing :D

Finally found some headrests that (with a little fine tuning) will fit the OEM brackets in 72 FJ40 bench seats. The end of a 20 year quest.
