Different strokes for different folks I guess. I grew up in the shadow of the Coors brewery. The best thing I can say about it is, they employed a s*** ton of local people. They had their own railroad, fire dept., water treatment plant, etc. But I still can’t believe anyone drinks that piss.
Lived in evergreen for a short time my uncle called it rocky mountain piss water he drank bud light go figure

I tried to find the source of a new noise.

After I installed terrain tamers on my 1978 FJ40, I noticed a good bit of noise from the rear I could feel in the floor. I don’t think it is related to the lift in any way, other than now having 4 distinct, working, articulating corners exposed a “noise.”

I got it in the air, and felt this:

Then took off the wheel:

And from inside:

Are the block spacers still available?

Jdc1, are you doing a vintage install or something else? Also curious on how your dakota digital gauge install goes. Great set up, still dialing in a few things. The water temp is off by 20-25 degrees on mine, everything else works great.
It’ll be a Vinrage Gen V kit. The Dakota is great- most of them that i’ve installed read high.

This is a valid statement. I get complacent from living in a pretty arid environment and haven't flushed in years but I will before I hit the trail!
Facing this right now. Baselining my 40 for SAS. Thought I would simply refresh my calipers but they had rust residue throughout from sitting a while. Know better now to flush my brake fluid routinely. Still blown away you can get Aisin reman calipers from autozone for $59 each with core! Easy button.

Fitted some new 285/75/16 nittos as part of rubithon prep. Ran out of time to finish my power steering installation. So I’ll be running a manual 60 steering box instead. Final reinforcing of the step/slider bars tomorrow and install my skid plate. Then pack up to start the 1000mile drive to that part of California on Monday afternoon

That looks great!
Is the body and paint all orginal?
Are the side steps built to also be sliders?

I would really like to see more of this 40. It seems to have a great bit of tasteful mods

In the resto land- I finished voltmeter swapping the cluster. and after 4 nights of sanding- finally fully stripped the roll bar- and got that painted.

And then started on version 4 of the roll cage speakers I've been playing with. This is the test print for the fit and texture, made a couple more tweaks and final version is on the printer now. Took a picture of the Steering wheel logo and used that for the Icon on the back side of the box.

Without starting a thread….i am looking for a recommendation for a metal body panel seam sealer. I’m thinking if it works on a Land Cruiser, it’ll work on my tractor

I'm feeling stuck on the FJ55 floor and could use a little motivation. Sometimes it helps to take the FJ40 out for a drive to clear my head, then come back to the project with fresh eyes. I also bring my film camera along and finally try out the new 15mm lens I've never used before.

Since it was a rainy Saturday here, I stayed in the garage and re-organized, again! In doing so I found my old side view mirrors. I’d had replaced them a few months ago after ordering the bases and mirrors from Amayama. The European style mirrors are really gorgeous but my older vision doesn’t agree with the view. Add insult to injury half of the order arrived the end of July 2025 BEFORE tariffs and the 2nd half showed up the end of August AFTER tariffs. Those few weeks cost me an extra $41+.

Swapped the old mirrors back. The parts ordered from @kevos37 arrived on Friday. Thank you Kev! Cleaned and painted and installed today. Easy stuff. It was the jack rod holders. While the lighting is poor, here is a blah photo. By the way, if someone is interested in used but brand new looking side mirrors… I’m going to post them in the classifieds tomorrow. They have about 60 miles of wind on them

Here are what the mirrors look like…while they are great mirrors…. It’s the convex view I cannot get comfortable with

I love the euro mirrors (Linda’s got some!), but I don’t love the look. The early rectangular mirrors mounted to the windshield hinge is my favorite look. But I love the visibility of these!

I put a pair on mine. I like that the spring compression is adjustable, I was always having to readjust the original mirrors because that ball joint did not hold well.

Ha ! @POPO AGIE ….nailed it. THAT is the annoyance. I never cared for the wind pushing my mirrors and the adjustable tension on those euro style is a bonus. Were it not for the convex view, and it is not really that bad, I’d have left them on. It’s fine on the passenger side as it’s not my primary. Maybe I can change the glass?

My ‘74 had the round mirrors attached to the doors. When you took the doors off, no mirrors.
