I had my driver’s side glass remodeled/vented this morning at a trailhead while I was out on my morning run. Who would have thought that smash and grab crooks would be out at 7am? You’d think they’d get a real job with that kind of “get-up-and-at-em” motivation.

On that note. I’m not the kind that has to have Lexus etched glass so do any of you have experience with door glass from Safelite?

If you want the tint to match exactly go Genuine Toyota/Lexus, even if it's not installed by them. Not to mention safelite's terrible QC and install practices in general.

Thanks. Safelite says they do the green up front and gray in the back like factory. Not worried about an exact match as I’ll be re-tinting anyway. You did give me an idea though. I may have them do it but I’ll have everything torn down by the time they get here, have them put the windows in and I’ll reassemble.

Buy the glass from Lexus and DIY is an option too but they quoted me at almost $1k just for the glass.

Safelite wants $450+tax for the whole job. Have to check with local glass guys, too.

In any case, I’m convinced I need to do the tear downs and put back together myself. Maybe that will help with pricing.

I was thinking about ordering the LFD front skid plate but they show up as back order. How long did you have to wait after you order?
They had the bare metal in stock so I drove over and picked it up and painted it myself.

This week I learned the hard way about clock springs. I had to put mine back together and it is not a fun process. Posting this so others don’t make the same mistake as me.

I saw another person here suggest removing the steering wheel when threading a leather steering wheel cover. I remember doing a similar wheel wrap on my 100 series out in the sun and it took me hours over a few days with the thread getting caught on everything in the cabin. It was hell. So I thought what the heck, I’ll give it a shot and do it in the comfort of my AC this time and put it back on once finished.

The removal process is pretty straight forward:

1. Pop off square side panels on column, undo airbag torx 30 on each side
2. Remove airbag wires/plugs. Set airbag aside face up
3. Remove the 19mm center nut
4. Use a marker to line up splines for re-install
5. Remove steering wheel

Mine was really stuck on there, so I took a rubber mallet and tapped it around the wheel gently. When I pulled, the wheel it came off but so did a bunch of this white ribbon from behind it. Apparently, the clock spring had stuck to the back of the steering wheel and the front half came off with it upon removal.

I had the put this back together and rewind all the ribbons back inside. This process took hours to get right as the ribbons are different lengths and it’s very awkward to get it all to fit the way it’s supposed to. The next fun part was figuring out dead center of the spring once assembled and to match it with my steering wheel. Once centered it will turn almost 4 full turns in either direction.

The moral of the story is be more careful than I was.

Most steering wheels have two holes to thread in a hub puller.. has worked well for me in the past and gives a lot of control. Leave the hub nut partially on to prevent even that shooting the steering wheel at your face if it’s really tight. Could work well for the mallet also.

But yeah steering wheel ribbon cables are wonderful things until you go messing with them.. I consider successfully getting a similar Mercedes part put back together one of my greatest mechanical achievements.

Definitely will not be doing this on another modern vehicle without a puller. Hard lesson but I did learn a lot about the steering system by way of force.

First and best oil change ever with @bjowett oil filter housing.

Added some 1.25 spacers in preparation for 295/70/18’s tomorrrow. Thanks @tbisaacs for all the knowledge you have documented on getting that size to fit a 570. I’m excited to move from stock Tundra tires!

I drove out to Golden, CO from MN and paid a visit to my new friends at Slee Offroad.

I got an ARB front bumper (would have gotten the Slee but I need the hoop because deer love me), plus a set of Slee skid plates and rock sliders. Very happy.

And as if I wasn’t spending enough already, it was nice to be able to walk down to the Spyderco outlet 😎.
