That tiedown really isn't doing much, especially in the event something fails going 75 down the 405 (which, it won't, your setup seems plenty solid). I'd ditch it the tiedown.
Just to ask, what are you worried about failing? The hardware holding the hilift? Ease your senses by using some old fashioned overkill...get some 3/8" grade 8 hardware.

Keep in mind too, you aren't going to want to keep that gear on the roof all the time... the sun will eat everything. Grade 8 hardware will hold up better to the on and off.

Yeah, I was worry about the hi-lift flying off at highway speed. And noted! I will look into stronger bolts. ty

Glad to help. If you aren't in a hurry, I'd order what you need from McMaster... you can generally get a box of hardware, for what you'd spend on a few from the big box stores... it's a nice way to build up your fastener collection

Definitely gonna get a flat bar on mine. I decided against a wingnut because of the ease of removing it. I know it sounds counterproductive, but I have trust issues with people around my area.

Installed a brake controller in my 06 yesterday. I was way easier than I thought it would be. 30 minute job:banana:

Next up will be my 2000. That’s going to be the fun one:beer:

Gotta do this soon. I hate running wires.

Just finished my Ironman lift, medium kit with nitrogen shocks. Much improved ride quality vs the clapped out AHC system. I'd post pics but my camera on my cell took a dump. Besides I need to raise the front a hair bit more to rid the stink bug stance before beauty photos haha

Replaced PCV valve & hoses. It was a much easier job than I had anticipated and I could do it in 15min with a couple beer breaks in between next time. These were original after 18 years and 203k miles and they definitely showed their age. Both hoses showed significant rotting and splitting on both ends and the grommet (I have a ‘00 so no threads) completely disintegrated trying to remove it. Luckily I got it all with no pieces falling into the block.

This is just part of the original grommet, the rest of it fell down in the bay and I believe landed on top of my skid plate.

A thorough engine bay cleaning is next on my list.

Took advantage of the long Easter weekend to knock out my timing belt service and 180k punch list. Here's what got done:
  • Replaced timing belt
  • Replaced Idler & tensioner pulleys
  • Replaced hydraulic tensioner
  • Replaced waterpump- using correct 1282B fipg, new gasket & O-rings
  • Replaced thermostat & gasket
  • Replaced L & R cam seals
  • Replaced engine crank seal
  • Replaced fan bracket and fan clutch bolts
  • Replaced radiator
  • Replaced radiator cap
  • Replaced radiator upper & lower hoses
  • Refilled with Toyota SLL2 coolant (4 gal)
  • Replaced 8 sparkplugs
  • Replaced coil boots and seals
  • Replaced heater T's and 6 hoses
  • Replaced serpentine tensioner pulley assy
  • Repalced Serpentine belt
  • Cleaned MAF & Throttle body intake
  • (several other items that would have been done during this service have been serviced in the past 10k)
The OEM radiator that came out had some nasty buildup (grass, dirt, pine needles) on the lower bottom forward facing that is covered by the trans cooler- partially the reason my temps were running 198-202F. Also the fan had some mud built up in the front side recesses which may have contributed to some engine vibes from being off balance. When I removed the fan belt the there was a heavy side that made the fan rotate downward. If you offroad your truck, check the fan and inside radiator from time to time for build up. Would have never thought of checking those two areas for build up. Replaced OEM radiator with the Spectra Premium CU2755 which bolted right up with out issue. Running temps thus far are 8-10 degrees cooler. Didn't run into any major issues otherwise during the service. Had a stubborn #5 spark plug but by the grace of the man above it finally came out with out breaking or galling.

Total time over the 3 days probably exceeded 20-24hrs of my labor; yeah I'm terribly slow. Its my first TB job and I spent a lot of time cleaning, flushing, inspecting taking time to follow FSM step by step. Having some special tools helps but mostly 10mm,12mm, 14mm sockets, wrenches gets the job done. The most useful special tool I had onhand was the crank pulley holder (SP Tools 64300) Breaker bar attached to this tool and another on the bolt made for an easy removal and torquing for install.

Truck runs like a champ. Good to go for another 100k. Cudo's to MUD and those that came before to pave the way with good threads, photos, and tips. With out the help and posted info of this community there's no way I would have considered tackling this job. Turned out it was pretty easy, but time consuming. I gotta say by the end of the weekend my body felt like I had ridden a couple of 20 lap motos. There is no cross-fit training for wrenching from the garage floor for 3 days.

Good for you replacing the crank seal. I didn’t on mine for whatever reason I can’t remember and it’s leaking. Plan on redoing early next year.
Now I’m ready for those back shocks!

Really awesome mod! Broke some teeth off my front ring gear today!
4LO climbing a ledge with the center diff locked and rear air locker engaged.
Got off the trail by pulling the drive flanges and front driveshaft and locking the center diff. I'll be in 2wd for a while now. The silver lining is I might have a front locker in my future. Pretty pricy. I hate to cheap out and just do the ring gear but a locker is a big $$$$$ unexpected surprise.

Oh yeah and it's a 2004 with the "stronger" front diff.

@nmatcek were you bouncing/ hopping or just wheels spinning? I think I will go ahead and put a front locker in sooner rather than later

No hopping to speak of. Front wheels were bumping into the ledge while one was spinning. Front got up the ledge actually. Then I was trying to bump the rear tires up the ledge. I don't actually know specifically when the failure occurred because I never heard a bang or any unusual sounds. What I did hear was just my rear lower links banging into the lip of the ledge.
Then after clearing the ledge I heard the thunk, thunk, thunk while driving straight and level.

@nmatcek bummer! At least you were prepared and made it out. Thanks for sharing

Sorry dude- that sucks/ but nice work on the trailside get-home procedure. Mechanical self sufficiency is a excellent attribute on the trail.

Had you not busted your front diff, I would have never seen that well equipped tool roll. That is an impressive kit.

Good luck with the locker install.

Finally got the Owl Expedition Media Mount installed. Ran into some issues trying to get the screws out when removing the tape deck. I bought JIS screwdrivers but needed more torque to break the screws loose. In the end, a 0 Philips with a drill got them out.

I use mine for my iPhone X. I attached a wireless charger to avoid having to plug my phone in every time to charge. I’ll run the cord through the tape deck later when I get a VAIS for Bluetooth.

Do you by chance have a list of what you carry in your tool roll? I am fearing the same issue and wanna make sure I am fully prepared the next time I am out on the trail.
