What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

At one point, I had 3 cars and 5 turbos...my wife's Mini Cubman All4 single turbo, my daily Ford Explorer Sport twin turbo v6, and my fun Audi RS6 twin turbo v8. Culled the heard a bit and now just one turbo (for now) on my wife's Mini...my current daily is a 5th gen 4Runner & my fun one is the 80. Doing the trans first on the 80 before I go whole hog with boost too!
Currently have an 85 Audi with a turbo, 03 Audi with a turbo, and my wife’s GTi. 80 series has a Cummins swap planned.

Charcoal canister tried to quit on me while out on a weekend trip. Had the excessive hissing after removing the gas cap.

I gave it a few love taps with the 4 pound sledge and it seems to have fixed it, until I get home.

I immensely appreciate all of the info on this forum which helped me immediately diagnose the problem.

The campsite was nice too.

As much as I love my 80, I gotta say, the old Iron Pigs will always hold a special place in my heart.

Until you need to live with them daily.
I really enjoy my BJ74. But, I have to be in the mood to use it. On the other hand, my 80 is more comfortable, capable, and adaptable. If it ever came to a point where I had to make the tough decision to keep only one... the 80, hands down.

It still goes out. This from a half hour ago.

Finally a long weekend to tackle some many overdue items. The tuna can wasn't as bad as expected but the old deformed gasket on it was as crusty as can be. Took a healthy amount of patience, some plastic scrapper, and even a mini glass scrapper to get the old gasket stuff off.

Next was the blower motor, but that was relatively clean. Only thing of note is the gasket from the fresh air / recirculating air vent door disintegrates from the slightest touch, so to find some new stick on gasket.

Finished out the day with the distributor. I could tell it was leaking oil based on all the nastiness on the outside of the cap/distributor. What I wasn't expected was how bad the lower shaft was with crude. Lot of patience with the rubber scrapper to clean it up. I hope this isn't an indication of what lies within the valve cover as I've been pretty diligent on oil changes and blackstone reports come back clean (15w-40 oil changes for a while to help clean stuff out). The o-ring broke in two as soon as I got a pick in a place to start applying some outward pressure. But new o-ring, rotor, cap/gasket.

I drove the 80 for the first time since getting the new short block in. Half way around the block I developed a strange clanking sound coming from the rear. I thought at first it was the rear drive shaft but after getting it back in the garage, I do not see anywhere there is any rubbing, grinding or contact of any kind. I pulled it back out of the garage this morning and laid on the ground while my wife pulled forward, and the noise seems to be coming from the rear differential. My worst fear is that i did not get the air lines for the ARB air locker just right when I installed the rear differential. It is making a clanking sound almost like taking a hard object and striking a steel pipe. I am going to pull the rear differential and hope I have not screwed this air locker up.

I was also able to get the front end mocked up with the new Delta VS bumper and the quad head light conversion. I am going to have to pull it all back off since I have some wiring stuff to deal with. The quads are not coming on at all. The PO chopped up the wiring for the head lights and none of the original plugs were present. I added OEM head lights pig tails for the low and high side and tested them to make sure they work using the sock bulbs. But as soon as I add the quad harness from Iron Slug, nothing works on either side. This one has me befuddled since I have the right plugs and power is confirmed with a meter and using bulbs.
