What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Took the family up to Laikipia in central Kenya to camp with some friends, see some wildlife and make some memories. The kids wanted to be on the roof most of the dirt and off-road time (and at night in the tent safe from the animals).
This new to me 80 is fresh out of Rift Valley Rovers' shop where it got a new suspension, tires, respray, leather seat-covers and windshield. It handled the bush as well as the mostly paved backroads on the way up. First trip in the book and we're all loving it.

Why Superior over Dobinson or Terrain Tamer? Any tariff?

Are you aware that Delta and Trail Tailor makes radius arms for lifted 80s to battle caster correction?

Hyperflex arms are different, perhaps that’s why he got their kit.

Cheers

I am aware that Delta and Trail Tailor make arms. I spent a lot of time researching lifts and determining what was right for me. In the end, Superior was one of the only companies that made and sold a lift, which also included their own radius arms as part of the package. That leads me to believe that these arms are designed for this lift, and everything should work right (in a perfect world). All of the other arms are just fixing a gap that lift manufacturers are leaving. So I decided that I would try the company that had it all in one package and were designed to work together. I am a huge fan of Delta, and am waiting on a large order from them right now. I have not tried any Trail Tailor products, but I am sure I will soon, as this is a full build!

Superior arms work differently than stock or Delta, relocating one of the axle mounting points to work in a different plane. There is a pin that can be removed for off-roading that disconnects one of the mounting points, unlocking lots of articulation of the front axle. :D

Not really a weekend project but I have a habit of doing more after work during the week than during the weekend. Haven't touched the old 80 series much lately, don't really drive it anymore, even let the battery go fully dead by accident. It needs some attention, it's time for an engine refresh and it needs me to put in the suspension bushings I have been sitting on for the past 5 years. I purchased a 1FZ to tear down and rebuild in anticipation of working on the thing but still haven't really gotten the urge to do that with all the other work going through my shop lately. It's one of those, I don't really have a use for this vehicle, type things. But regardless I tore the 1FZ down (found the PO of that engine melted the #1 piston, impressive lol) and moved it into my basement to rebuild more as a passion project rather than in the shop where it'll get forgotten about again amongst the customer engines and wiring harnesses.

But I did get something out of the way, needed some way to generate some interest in the old beast again and decided I'd take my retired wheel and tire combo from my Tacoma and bore out the hub centers so they'd fit on the LC. I've had 31s, 32s, and 33s on this LC in the time I've owned it and always thought it looked goofy, like a fat guy with chicken legs. Well now I know that the sweet spot is a 35 inch tire... and really now I'm interested in working on the thing again just like that. A little visual goes a long way I guess.

Very curious. Please do a write up for us. I am aware of Superior and its popular in AU. Maybe its slowly be making its way into the US like Terrain Tamer. Glad somebody here in the states is sampling more of this setup. Have seen some but not in recent years.

Like anything else in the cruiser world, this is an educated guess and a shot in the dark on this lift. But the old lift had to go, all of it, so this at least gives me a solid platform once up and running to play around with and find what I really like. I will certainly be giving updates as all the changes happen!

Got the Mark's 4WD 4L80E/HF2A adapter kit in the mail. We're currently working out the schedule for pulling the LQ4/4L80E from the donor car, refreshing the LQ4 (mild truck cam, lifters, valve springs, upgraded rocker arms, pushrods, oil pump, etc) and getting a transmission shop to add the reluctor ring to the 4WD 4L80E. Aiming to start all that in January.

trying to figure out how to get the left side of my hood seated properly - lifted a little.....the wind tends to catch it and lifts it a little more when driving. tried the obvious ones I think - hoping the hood isnt bent....
