So glad you guys were able to make it out safely. It sounded like a hair-raising trip.

Replacing the other 3 window motors on the truck. Replaced one a long time ago and love how much faster it is.

Anyone tell you how much fun it is lol. 😂

Well, after at least 15 min of trying to screw the new one in, I gave up and inspected the hole. Realized Doorman does not thread the holes anymore. :bang:

Luckily I purchased a tap and die set last year...

Toyota window motors don't come threaded either. The bolts are supposed to be "self-tapping" but it may take a little force to run them in.

Interesting. I could have swore my last Doorman was threaded. No way would I want to keep trying without the tap.

Got out wheeling again in mid August. Capable trucks allowed more varied trail selection. Didn't get many pics, but a few.

Tacoma testing out the trimming for the 35" tires Joe just put on.

Me down the same section ... just an 80 doing 80 things.

Not long after that I hit 2 odd spots, one on purpose and one by accident. There are a few mud pits and I've never tried them before, but it's been fairly dry lately and I had never seen the one called Smoothie that low before. A little goading from my trail mates and off I go ... they say if was headlight deep ... sadly no pics. It was a short pit, so no biggie.

Then we hit a spot I knew to be muddy and I was following the Taco. He drove right through no issue, so I followed his line. I felt the truck sink, kicked on the lockers and only got the rear to engage. Front locker has been sketchy for a while now since I ripped the wiring out of it earlier this year while trying to go through some ice.

Anyway ... this is how I ended up in the parking lot.

You can see by the spray pattern the front locker never kicked in. I was able to hit enough water holes on the way out to clean off the wheels, but that was it. What a mess. Had to sneak into a self spray wash under the cover of darkness a day later.

Hey mud ppl,
For those of you like me, without a swing out or a roof rack, how do you bring extra fuel along on your trips?
I use a steel 20L Wavian NATO can in the back. Not a knockoff. Zero smell. I don’t fill it up until the last gas stop before the trail. Not worried about it creating a hazard off-road.
I usually carry it on the rack. I've carried it inside a few times, when I didn't need or want to hassle with the rack. NATO can as well.

Sorted the cables that have been hanging out from my ashtray for a year after I changed the head unit out and connected the ebrake sensor so Android Auto actually works.

Halfway through trying to get the mic on the rear view mount I chickened out for fear of damaging the headliner. We'll see if this works.

Was good times tell the Creek fire started and we high tailed it out of there.

mrs surfpig was just on a conference call with someone in Berkeley. Same thing.

Ya. It’s spooky AF. Hoping the winds will keep the smoke aloft, because if it drops to ground level it’s going to be real bad.

Happy to have a CDL button!
And yes, I do need to fill up on fuel.
Time for my 345,000 mile oil change as well.

Re-stickered the hazard switch I’m using for CDL button. Previously was placed over red triangle and thus didn’t light up. Popped out plastic piece, scraped off the print down to clear plastic, tacked it back in place with superglue. Covered with white vinyl, confirmed I got a bit of light coming through, then overlapped in black w/ CDL icon cut out. Popped a green cover over the bulb to make it match the rest. Works great & slightly brighter than stock buttons. Now I can see it during winter when it’s dark most of the time...

Well after a fun few weeks, finally back on the road. It all started with replacing the fan shroud since my old 1 was cracked in the center and both the mounting holes at the top were broken. Seeing all the room I had, figured I'd go all the way down the rabbit hole and replace the oil pump seal and crank seal. My harmonic balancer was a nightmare to get off, took 3+ hours. Then went to the oil cover, 2 of the screws were already stripped and I stripped another 1. Overall not bad. Got a right angle drill and got the heads to pop off easily. Tried to get out the remainder of the threads by hands, pliers, no dice. Some heat/drill/extracting much later, finally all of them came out. Found some red stuff on the threads which i suspect someone put red thread locker on :bang:. My seal was stuck to the cover and quite brittle. My hats off to all you folks that have had a casual few hours at this job, what a delightful afternoon that sounds like. Took the opportunity to cleanup some of the front and actually be able to see the timing marks.
Replaced the screws the right way, got things buttoned back up, new pulleys as well and new belts cause I'm sure they were long past due.

Well done, its the tougher jobs that add character to our rigs...at least in our own minds anyway

This same thing happened to me! I thought it was a defect in the motor or something.
