What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (26 Viewers)

I attended Exploring New Hampshire's Fall Crawl last weekend. The 80 did great and I only had to bypass one obstacle (the steepest part of Devil's Pass) because it was so slick and wet. Overall, it seemed like my rig got traction even better than the v8 swapped, ORI suspension'd and 37" tired Jeep TJ in my group!
I think you drove thru my boyhood hometown, Unity/Claremont?

There is nothing in that that concerns me.

That is the humidity from the cool air and the rain (100% humidity) as the engine warms up.

If there was a "maple syrup" smell along with it, I would be concerned, but that appears to be completely normal. You're just not used to cool temps and high humidity in your area. Normal for those of us farther north!

Especially if the "smoke" goes away when you start driving it.

A HG going out, that smoke is HEAVY and WHITE and has a distinct "maple syrup" smell to it and it doesn't go away.

That is actually "steam".

I agree. When my head gasket blew, it just kept blowing white smoke and got continually worse. Didn't take me long to get on mud and find out it was a blown head gasket. If you have any doubts, just pull your plugs. If you have red (assuming you are using Toyota Red Coolant) on your plugs, you probably have a blown head gasket and the smoke will get worse each time you drive it. The number six plug is the most common leakage point so pull that plug first. It is the one by the firewall.

Prepping for the weekend:
Centered(mostly) the steering wheel
Thought the passenger side wheel bearing nut was loose so opened the hub but it wasn't but I retightened it anyways
Reconnected the upgraded front sway bar, definitely a little harder than the skinny OEM version
Tighten all the lugs nuts, they were pretty loose from the rotation and balance from america's tires
Checked timing
Now, for the most part, the play in the front wheels are gone but still have a little 12/6 play. Since the wheel bearings are tight I suspect it's the trunnion bearing and that could be the cause at the occasional shimmy at around 65-70mph.

So can I just remove the top shim and tighten it back? Another problem is the top bearing cap won't come out, what's the best way to pop it out without disassembling the entire thing?

Finally mounted my emergency hammer on the A Pillar. Removed the door handle for that. Very easy to do.

I stopped and helped the KS State Troopers pull out a stranded civilian on K10 westbound this morning.

Lots of iced over bridges and ice covered roads where the wind was blowing snow and rain all night.

Troopers were very appreciative since all the tow trucks and 8 other units were occupied with a rollover and double collision half a mile down the road. I don;t see how these Troopers deal with that much stupidity on any given day.

I did it for safety of others, not to profit or show off. Did it because somebody needed help.

Had the forest all to myself for harvesting Doug Firs....This was my third trip and I'm beat to s***.

Many of the state police and county sheriff vehicles out here are pickup trucks, perhaps this is one of the reasons why. If I was in law enforcement I'd way rather have a full size truck than a patrol car.

You don't use that handle every time getting in/out?

To me it's useless. I am very tall and combined with my rocksliders it's easy to get inside the vehicle. That's the great thing about human species - everybody is diffrent.

Nice ride! I almost signed up for that trip but life got in the way again... Nice to see another NH 80 series!

When it comes to mods... Go big or go home!:flipoff2:

Installed my Nipple Guard from the Etsy page of @Outsane. Nicely executed, inexpensive, and a product that serves a purpose. It even has a recessed area printed in to accept the thickness of VHB tape. It is held in by VHB and captured behind the shroud mounting bolt.

Nipple guard for FJ80/FZJ80 Landcruiser or LX450

Next on to his 3D printed mirror brackets...

Are you on the ENH boards? Let me know if you ever want to get out and wheel with another 80!

Replaced my rear brake pads/rotors, brake booster(it was leakingabs delete(slee double sheer up front took it out months ago) and lsvp delete. Peddle feels kinda “meh” but when i stomp it, my armored pig goes from 70-0 in a damn hurry. Prob a lil air in the system, ill get it later, maybe master cylinder is tired, maybe im retarded.

I have a pad clip or something making noise on passenger rear, maybe a shoe? Gotta tear that one back apart. It’s faint, but i am sensitive to high pitch noises. Its gotta go!

I did everything you did as well. and THEN bleed it with a speedi bleed and all is right. 99 bucks I think, well worth it.

We were just up there in the rain last week, then again last night and night before great trails. Did you hit cathole??
