After a number of weeks turning my previous 80 into my 17yr old sons 80 and doing a bit of PM and other mods on my new to me 40th anniv 80, we did a shake down run today up Tincup pass.

Took out the rear pig because I have a pinion seal leak and I figured it would be a good time to check the gears over and make sure the pinion bearing was cool. All looks great, just gotta do the seal and clean the mess up.

I also figured it was a good time to mod the axle as recommended by @LandCruiserPhil to make removal easier if it gets bent or twisted. One of my machinist buddies is doing it next week.

Next up was giving my LED lights the boot and going to incandescent H1 and H4 bulbs in my depos, hopefully for better reliability. I also switched back to oem amber turn/park lenses. I like the look on my color better.

The lights seem better but I'll have to wait til I can drive it again to really tell.

Amber is so much better looking.
I thought I wanted the clear look but just can't deny the classic look of the amber lenses. Every time I see a picture of a Desert Dune 80 with those lenses I like it.

Still undecided on that opinion so I will likely fit some LX markers as they are a happy medium with clear shell and amber inner reflector.

More info on your sons/past black 80?
Basically he, @ExpoMax, was determined to run 40's on a expo style rig with super capabilities when wheeling. We did quite a bit of trimming so he could stick with low lift large tire build and retain good drivability. He can stuff the 40's in the back with no issue bump stopped 2" and 12.5" travel shocks. Front has been a bit more tricky as it rubs a bit when he is turned but he's only bump stopped an additional inch and he has 12.5" travel shocks up there too.. Running med/heavy OME springs right now. We also rebuilt both front and rear axles with Longfields and 5.29's. Gusseted/trussed the front housing as well, and added a bunch of armor to the housing. We are mid bumper build for both the front and back. The 250 mile trip went well. He is getting about 14mpg and road manners are nearly as good as when I was just running 305/70r16 Duratrac's. He's also got a sleeping platform, 10gallons of water w/electric pump, and other cool things going on inside. I'll also add, it's been all his hard earned money, measuring and planning to make this happen. I have simply been the experienced helper that also knows how to weld:)

After about 8-10 hours of effort I am raising the white flag on my Avital 5305L Alarm/remote start installation project. I have come to the conclusion that this is not possible without an installation manual. Now I just need to find a reputable auto auto security installation company in the Orlando area...:(

Any more photos info on the winch/bumper set up on the black one? That's exactly the direction I want to go with mine.
My front winch plate is actually a Trail Gear special. It's the one they make for the 80 series. At minimum It is a good platform to start off of. However for my preference, it could be a little higher clearance. There is about 3-4 inches between the winch and grill. When I get around to it I will move the winch back till it touches the grill, and mod the front.

Great pic @mervo . It looks like your son is saying "Daaaaad, get up, I wanna play!"

Well... Monday I bought a 92 that had been sitting under a tree for 10 years, dropped the tank and cleaned it out, changed the pump and sock filter, plugs, air filter, added fuel system cleaner. Got it running. Would run fine at low rpm, a little rough but would get around town just fine. When I would come to a steep hill and have to give it some gas it would act like it was hitting the rev limiter but at around 3k rpm. It eventually got to where it was happening a lot, and at even lower rpm, sometimes around 1500..

I chalked it up to dirty maf, afm, or whatever the hell intake sensor the 3fe has. So I took it off. The assembly that mounts to the air box with 4 nuts. Got some MAF cleaner and went to town. After its all clean I see the two small Philips head screws in the connector where it plugs up so, thinking it was like every other mass air meter I've ever dealt with, I attempted to remove it and clean it.

I've already been scolded so no need for that haha

Moral of the story is don't do that.
