Aight. Got the AC pulled and the leak fixed and the coolant filled.

IAC is set.

Timing is set.

All of the gauges are working in the new cluster

Was a very very productive day.

The list is getting shorter.

Good things. The ebrake cable and speedo cable had the extra 4” to allow for the H55

I would love to see how Toyota did the torque tube in FJ45s with the factory 5 speed and the under fuel tank. Anyone out there have one?

I can’t say for sure about the FJ45 but at least to the best of my knowledge the HJ47 never came stock with the 5-speed H55F.

Japanese and European market BJ46 models are the only variations in a long wheelbase I can find of a 5 speed and that's only from '82 to '84. All FJ45 models worldwide appear to have been 4 speed.

As much of the desire or wish it can be for a 5 speed, I wonder if it was an option back when, if many of us would have elected to add the option. Surely it would have added to the new vehicle cost. However, if you were in a position at opposite side of a sales desk buying a new cruiser back in the day, would you be anxious to hand over the extra money at the time?

My thinking, whether correct or not at the time, was that the 5th gear was still 1:1 in final drive but between gears is where the variables lie. Of course my u derstanding of why today is vastly different…yes, I want

It’s not 1:1 in 5th. It’s 1:1 in 4th.

I do see what you are saying. Toyota went the easy route and gave the later 40s 3.70 gears. That is really a perfect pairing in a FJ40 for the road.

Where the H55 shines is

1st gear. This truck is going to be dual locked so the low gear will help him navigate slowly on the tight Vermont trails.

3rd gear. That’s my favorite gear on a H55. Is tall enough to go 55 mph and stay with traffic going uphill. The 3rd in a 4 speed is too low and you really are a road plug.

But yeah. I get your point.

Wrestling 150’ of steel cable off the drum is always a good time.

I did an h55 swap years ago on an 83 hj47 pickup. Besides the bellhousing clearance it all bolted up. It was very close to the torque tube( no ebrake on the later models, but it barely snuck in. Also did an 82 bj42 and it was very close too, but fit! Another great build Nolan!
Yeah the Ebrake was the game changer here. Zero chance it goes back in where Toyota said so.
