Just as we get 30 or so miles out of amarillo I hear Tucker over the radio "I smell rubber burning I'm going to pull over." We pop the hood see freon leaking out of the hose where it goes into the condenser. I'm not sure what happened but I figured we'll dig into that when we get back that must have been the smell. 5 miles down the road..."I still smell rubber burning " so we hit the side of the road again at this point I had tucker leave the engine running while I glance under the bonnet. we have an amazing sun rise. So my copilot snapped a few pics.

Looks like the belt is nearly gone and flopping against the lower radiator hose trying to sever it in two hence our burning smell.

Not sure what to do at this point..can't tighten the belt any more, can't take it off. Closest town appears to be tucamacari 60 miles away. I start digging through my tool bags and come up with an idea. Not pretty but will protect the radiator hose.

With the bandaid in place we hit the road and start searching for auto parts stores online in tucamacari and San Jon, found two stores but both are closed on sundays.
So we go a little further

Several miles into new mexico we found a diesel truck repair shop and what do you know they are all ready open. 7:45 at this point. Not a moment to soon because here is what was left of the belt.

We decide to bypass the ac compressor all together and go for a properly sized belt after arguing with the all knowing parts guy who insisted on looking it up by application (and gave us the wrong belt) after going in and asking for a longer belt a couple more times we got what we needed.

Hang in there, man! You'll get it straightened out. Although you know Land Cruisers rarely let you down. Best of luck...

Wow! Now that is an adventure with an untested and true full rebuild! The AC thing will work out, but your work is truly inspirational to those of us in the middle of the rust wars!!

Cheers!

So jealous!:bounce:

Beginning to really like the tall skinny look...more and more all the time on a 40. Where did you find hubcaps??

Cheers on a superb adventure and write up!!

You can still get the OEM hubcaps from Toyota.

Front: 42621-60020
Rear: 42621-60010

Sweeet! Hubcaps are now on my wish list! Rims will take more digging for. I found them from the dealer, but $158.00 each is a bit on the high side for something I am going to blast and powder coat anyway. Anyone have any unused ones they want to part with??

Cheers!

Look around. MUD classified area will often dig up a set. I found mine locally via MUD.

Gracias for the leads...

Cheers!
