tire size debacle

I don't like the idea of putting a 10.5 tire on a 5.5 rim. People do it, sure, but I don't think it is something I am gonna do. I want my tire to function as properly as possible and the 10.5s will crown. I think that is a bigger deal, at least to me, than some make it. It might look cool, but functionality is important. You are right on the other tires I listed... I didn't realize the nittos and others had no LT variant, my mistake. I just scanned real quick.

I really want to pull the trigger on a OEM wheel deal, but based on above I guess I need to find an alternative plan. Or deal with the Klever sidewalls and hope they keep producing them...

Any wheel suggestions?
ive got over 100,000 miles on 33x10.50s on the oe 5.5 wheels.....zero issues.....until recently my 40 was my dailly driver.

You're in the club now! Kenda 33x9.5 on stock steel 15" Two years and very happy with this tire!!

Man I love this 40. Just the epitome of a survivor with modern flare.
Thanks E- I'm slowly getting her where she deserves to be. Gotta show off the new seats I did last year- night and day all around!

Hey folks. I know diddly about wheels and backspacing and all that jazz... Does anyone know if the following Dean - Cross Country will fit a 76 FJ40 with stock axles? Aside from the offset of 0 (being the unknown) it looks good, but seems like it would be close... The plan is to run 35x12.5's. Thanks!

There's really no way to tell without some dimension. You're going to need to learn about backspacing. You'll likely have to have a rim 8" or wider to fit 12.5 wide tires.

I have a very similar setup as what you want in this post. Stock 40 series axles.

17x8.5 “0” offset Fifteen52 analog. Modified with center cap clips for OEM caps.

3-4” total lift.

35” tires.

I’ve ran two tire setups, 35-12.50r17 and 35-10.5r17

35-12.5 works, rubs the springs on turn. Inside rear fender on flex.

35-10.5 is honestly perfect. And it was unintentional.

Pics of both.

What is the center opening size?
Needs to be 4”.
It's 110.3mm so 4.3 inches.

Rim is 8 inches wide. As shows in the screenie (without header, though. Doh!). Where it says 8.0J. Not super clear.

Sexiest 40 I've ever seen. I'm restoring a 77 that will be that color. :)

You can get the non-riveted oem wheels through Toyota. Get them when one of the dealers with a big online presence is having a sale and free shipping. Did that for all 5 for my 40 and 60. Ended up around $90 a wheel each time with free shipping.
And if going with hubcaps, buy them from the dealer at the same time for $12-15 each, not the $100 a set they sell for on eBay, etc.
Which Toyota dealer did you find them from? In my area of Portland, there are several but they seem to have about the same presence. Beaverton Toyota is technically the largest but not the one I hear most on the radio.

I see made in Japan, Toyota branded OEM 15" sets of 5 with hubcaps for $1000 delivered on eBay. I guess I'd save almost half if I found them on sale at the dealership. The local price would be $450 for 5 wheels, and $75 (upper range of $15 ea) for 5 hubcaps. I think I'd also have to pay duty for the eBay set, so if I'd could f8nd these at the local Toyota dealer that would be way better. Probably even when they're not on sale. I guess I'll be making some calls to the local dealers tomorrow!

I'm leaning more and more towards a 16" steel wheel. The question is whether to go with the established City Racers which has the OEM spec'd backspace. But I'm still considering a 16" x 7" and using spacers. From searching this site, it looks like there are some decent options, like the FJ Co aluminum "steelie" in this thread. Anyone have updated recommendations of other actual steelies? TIA!

I got mine through Serra Toyota online I think. They were running a big sale and free shipping. But the price you’re seeing sounds about like what I paid for 5 wheels and the hubcaps.

Apologies for not being clear, but the price of $450 + $75 (hubs) was my assumption based on what you paid. If I could find the same deal locally, which I doubt I could, because I'm usually not that lucky!!!

I'd be looking at what the local Toyota dealers could get them for or buy the $1000 set on eBay.

But I've mentioned in another post that I'm leaning towards 16" options, and not necessarily the City Racers.

Those are intriguing. A set of 5 looks to be $1250.

Couple questions from this newb on wheels...

1st: can you use the OEM hubcaps with these?

2nd: the stock wheel backspacing is 3.25", and the summit wheel is 4". That means I'd need use 3/4" spacers?

TIA
1) I think you’d need to install the clips to do so. But I haven’t tried so…
2) I have a set of the 16” that I got from a member here and they did not require spacers when I test fit them.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen people on here use those wheels and add the clips for hubcaps.

Whenever I ran 15" wheels with 4" backspace I had to run 1/4" spacers to clear the tre's.

I just clicked on the "up arrow" from the post you linked from SW20 and it brought me to the entirely new thread "Summit Smoothie". What a cool feature of this site!

So it seems no spacers are required on a 16x7 wheel with 4" backspacing. Is that regardless of the wheel/tire combo? I'm thinking of 255/85/16 Geolander MTs.

As for adding clips on steel wheels, does one just drill them on? I'll do a search for that here and on YT. Thanks!
