tire size debacle

It depends on what deal I find when it is time, but my favorite option currently is the Buckshot P78/16.

I also like the 255/85/16's Yoko MT's & Falken MT's.

Its all about looks for me, love the old school look of the Buckshots.

Consider that you may have some money into the stockers. They come primer black. You can rattle can them cheap DIY, but I am finding you can't get a 15" wheel powder coated for under $100 each here in CA. So the ~$100 factory black primered wheel isn't so cheap if you powder them.

Forgot to mention the City Racer 16" steel offering with hubcap clips. Essentially the same price as the alloy offerings though.

I have aired the Kanati 35x10.5 down to around 10psi on the stock wheels. Just driving around on the sand in Utah, no "wheeling". No issues. I do think these size of Kanati's may have a puncture prone sidewall if you are looking for something that you'll really beat on offroad. Another member tore a side wall just backing off his trailer and catching a ramp latch, and I lost one of these tires to road debris, the first time in my life losing a tire on a passenger vehicle.

Great, now I want 16" rims. I ran P78-15 buckshots forever. Back then they were $100 a piece. It's one best offroad tires I've ever run. I dont think I ever lost a mud run locally with them. The side walls are relatively stiff and tough. You'll only be able to air down to 12-15 psi to keep the bead on the rim. Mud and debris will evetually get trapped between the rim and the bead, so theyll slowly leak. I ran Q78-15's for a while too.

Is airing down an issue with 10.5 on a 5.5?

No. I’ve had BFG 105x15x33’s at 8 or 9 psi on the trail and never lost a bead. No problems with crowning or wearing funny either.

Lol @ being nervous with a 10.5 on a 5.5.

literally nothing wrong with it. My dually(s) (and i can’t fathom how many others) run 12.5 on 6” wide Alcoa’s and they actually carry weight. You’ll be fine, it’s not even a question of concern.

We can talk about 215/35/19 on a 9.5” wide wheel and guess what - that works just fine too :) that’s actually a question of safety if you’re going to ask about tire sizing.

Well, I'm tossing around the size of tires I want to put on my FJ40.
I'm interested in tall skinny tires on the 15" stock wheels. I'm interested in going with 33 x 9.5 x 15 tires. But for all purposess the tires I'm finding in that size are load range "B" 4 ply they are most likely designed for SxS. The weight ratings seem a bit low for a cruiser of this weight.
For $300 a tire I hate to take a chance, just inquiring if others have gone this route and how well did they act offroad and on road?
My 40 is on 2.5" to 3" lift springs, SOA, upgraded to power steering, she is only going to be used as a mild to medium wheeler. On road not a whole lot but , I never know till it happens.

SxS tires usually aren't DOT approved. If you were in an accident and the insurance company notices, they may not pay.

the issue the 16s would have for me... other than doubling the cost of a 5 set of wheels... is most of the offerings are an E load range, which I have had a few sets of and am not a fan of. I'll probably stick with the factory 15s and just deal with it. The exception is the Falken AT... that is a C. I did have skinny ST MAxx on an FJ cruiser back in the day and they were solid, but I don't think I would go that route again..... maybe.

OK, well ya'll have dumped a lot of different thoughts out there. I'll read over everything and maybe ask more questions,
A few that hit me: I had super swampers and those tires went egg shaped over time. I have concerns about wide tires on skinny wheels, DOT is a concern, but also a "LT" tire is a tougher tire especially in the sidewall. I have currently very old buckshot 235/75-15's on it but wouldn't trust them for much.

Thanks

OK, I'm reading all the suggestions, I feel I'm out on using the SxS tires , The look is exactly what i'm imagining, but I feel they are too low of a weight capacity, and soft side walls, won't be durable in the rocks like Katemcey.

pict 1: is what I'm currently on, kumho 235/75-15 buckshot tires, they are over 20 years old.
pict 2: I have 2 new old stock Kumho 31x10.5 x15 AT51 road venture A/T, I'm not looking to go A/T, though, they will be awesome in the Katemcey rocks, lots of tread to grab the rocks like a trials tire, and decent in mud. They would be ok at places like Gilmer, unless it's just muddy wet. The cost advantage is I have 2 of them, and will have to only buy 2 to get her on the ground. But my tire supplier only has 31x10.5-15 in the AT52 (so different tread) @ 4140 ea. And then beat this tire issue later on going to a M/T tire. They don't ballon the side wall as much as I had imagined on my 5.5" wheels.
pict 3: is a 32x11.5-15, it doesn't look to bad as far as balloning, though I can't get it to seat to the rim very well to inflate it. So, it is close in height to what I'm looking for but wider.
pict 4: is all 3 tires showing height differences.

So now more shopping and comparing.
thanks to all.

what do you plan to run on the 16s?

Man, this was the ultimate thread hijack…. Sorry about that.

Yea I’m really in decision paralysis about this. Putting 16s on feels wrong. 😂

I only have a few days left to get the deal on the OEMs so I need to decide.
"decision paralysis" indeed

I'm thinking I will just squeeze 10.5s on the 5.5 rim..... I keep looking at the RT and wanting to like it, but I don't. I can't justify paying double for 16s and not really wanting them that much. Maybe the Klevers will grow on me. The tread looks awesome but the sidewalls make them look like clown wheels to me. The beauty of the 40 is the clean simple look. The sidewalls look like beach balls or something. Maybe they are better in person. No offense to people who think they look great, it is just one man's opinion. I like the look of the KM3s and some of the other Mts... I just want a good snow performer too.... I know... I know.... It wont be great.... It wont be a designated snow tire, and MTs typically don't carry the mountain peak rating. My KO2s were great in the snow I thought, and the ST Maxx weren't bad. The RT would probably be pretty good too....

If you had to pick a 10.5 that performs good in the snow what would it be? Obviously the KO2s and geolander AT4.... but of the Mts which have you heard can be surprisingly up to the task?

You started looking at 33-9.50, now your considering 32-11.50? Shorter and fatter?
I think they're sort of a bastard size.

Keep in mind actual tire size is usually smaller than the advertised size

No, I am NOT considering 32x11.5, I happend to have one on the old tire rack and just installed it to see how it ballons off of the 5.5" wheel.
33" ties are my goal, getting away from the 235's

The Kendra’s are awesome in snow. Aw-sum.

Thanks for making this even more painful.....

kidding of course... Those sidewalls... if they were just slightly less gaudy.... Do you have some pics of your rigs with the klevers and grabbers

Man oh man... I just loved the look of the old BFG skinnies. Just looked right. I was looking again at 16" rim options... I think the 15 I could try the kendas... if I absolutely can't handle the look I can put some 10.5s on.... It's the safe bet.
