tire size debacle

I took my 2025 SR5 tacoma out yesterday in the storm here in Northern Va, its first... It has the stock toyo HTs... 4wd did well, but not amazing. Drama free getting the ol' lady to her shift at the hospital but not what I'm used to as I typically have had an AT or RT tire in my life. I had to pick her friend up in an unplowed neighborhood and we powered through it... respectable, but not top tier.

I run US Wheel 16x7 on both our 40s. With custom 3-1/8" backspace for discs.

Green has 4" HFS lift and 35x10.5x16 Super Swampers. Just replaced with 17" wheels and Kenda Klevers as the SS aged out and got too spendy.

Yellow has 2" lift with Toyo M55 255x85x16 (Best all around tire I've ever had on a vehicle, bulletproof and excellent traction in mud, snow and ice.)

The replaced 16" wheels and tires are available if someone here is lookin'. You know how to find me.

@centerlineseal

X2 the best tire I had ever owned was the Toyo m55 in 255/85r16 as well … couldnt justify the price jump to the 123/120 load range 55’s when they stopped manufacturing the M55 in 118/115

If they were more reasonably priced and in the 118/115 it would be the last brand that would ever go on our cruiser

If anybody is in the “unlimited expendable income” category I highly recommend them :)

No shi*! My current set of 4, purchased last year, was north of $2K.

I'm probably going with Kenda Klevers... They are an RT, and ugly.... No ATs exist in that size anymore. The stock wheels are unfortunately, severely limited. You basically have the Kendas, Nitto MTs, and Geolanders... another MT. I think thats about it... Toyo may have a MT as well. There aren't great options. It kinda stinks.
Kendra Klever RT KR601 33x10.50 x15 on stock steelies.

For what it's worth... For the past several months I've been dealing with the same dilemma at tlcrz. I just pulled my Toyo 31x10.5R15 MT's (factory suspension). After installing a new suspension with 2.5" lift, and after powder coating the original 15" rims... I'll be mounting Kenda Klever 33x9.5R15 RT's. While tlcrz may not have to deal with snow, I do, and the MT's were worthless (unless moving sideways is your objective). I had considered waiting for BFG KO3's in 33x10.5 R15, but there is no serious time line for that size... sometime in 2026? Maybe. KO2's ARE still available, but I opted for skinnies. Powder coating should be completed this week, the tires were delivered on Monday... I'll post pix as soon as I get things mounted. Good Luck with you decision.

Well, I'm searching for tires, trying to decide on keeping the 15" stock wheels, or biting the big bullet and upgrade to 16" wheels and tires.
The pros for keeping the 15"s is just buying the tires. I found some Kenda Klever R/t Kr601 - Lt33x9.50r15 Tires fot @290 a tire (tall and skinny like I want) The description says they are LT tires, IDK on DOT or not (I'll call tomorrow)

The cons are if I ever think I want to upgrade to disk brakes to my understanding so far is I can't with the stock 15"s with rivets.

The pros for bumping up to 16"s is a better selection of tires (the prices are a little less) , if one day I want to bump up to disk brakes it will work with the new 16" wheels. The cons are buying new wheels at crazy prices as well, I never would have imagined steel wheels costing such a crazy high price, one can buy aluminum wheels for not much more $$$$. And I'm not against aluminim wheels but just like the stock wheel look, for my relativly stock looking FJ.

On a side note my many upgrades to LC are going good I have several more parts on order, still trying to finish the cooling hose fitting issues (because I'm frankensteing it, replumbing the brake system, dual master cylinder, power brake booster, power steering, holly FI, reupholstering the seats, about to order new retactable seat belts, new shocks, I've upgraded the wiring harness to a 12 fuse block, added in a chevrolet tilt column, and putting reverse u-bolts kit on it,once it is together and running I'll share a few pictures and hopefully get her on the trail real soon.

Well, generally we have limited amounts of snow and unfortunately ice, but this week has been an exception. Thought my suburban with michelin street tires has been doing real good on it. I'm getting excited with the option of the Kenda- Lt33x9.50r15 Tires I really like them for the skinny and a little less sidewall bulge.

To save $$ on 16x6 steel wheels, the dexstar trailer wheels is a good option

Not enough pictures in this thread. Traded out the riveted steelies way back when Toyota sold the welded 15’s for less than $100 ea. Have about 10k on the Kendas now and hope they never stop selling them. Great tire.

Back in 2005 tall skinnies were pretty limited. BFG KOs and TSL seemed to be the most popular.

Quick PSA @fireflyr looks like your front shackles are facing the wrong way, the anti-inversion bolt needs to face the axle. Back to regularly scheduled programming

Well, I just commited to the 33x9.5 kendas, @fireflyr my toy will be taking the stance like yours.

Thanks to all that posted their comments, ideas, etc it helped me talk tire options and #1 make sure I procure an LT tire that is DOT and weight capable.
Spending this much on tires , one wants to make the best decision.

Next is ordering shocks @fireflyr I see those bilsteins, how you like them and what model are they?

5100’s if I remember correctly. Will look it up. Ride is much better than the OME 10 year old shocks. Much more compliant.

You’ll like the tires.

Did you get the tires already? With some shopping around you can get them a lot cheaper.
I recently got a set for right around 200/tire
I searched the web pretty hard, never found anything cheaper, except for SxS tires.

Yeah, my 20 year old OME shocks were ok, but I am looking for better. In the future I will change from the OME rear springs. Already put parabollic springs on the front.
5100 are what I'm looking at, as soon as I finish my u-bolt flipplates and verify the rear lenghts needed.
The picture of your 40 with the tires sitting next to it , I would assume is your driveway, that looks like a nice step away from the world.
