Well, I'm tossing around the size of tires I want to put on my FJ40.
I'm interested in tall skinny tires on the 15" stock wheels. I'm interested in going with 33 x 9.5 x 15 tires. But for all purposess the tires I'm finding in that size are load range "B" 4 ply they are most likely designed for SxS. The weight ratings seem a bit low for a cruiser of this weight.
For $300 a tire I hate to take a chance, just inquiring if others have gone this route and how well did they act offroad and on road?
My 40 is on 2.5" to 3" lift springs, upgraded to power steering, she is only going to be used as a mild to medium wheeler. On road not a whole lot but , I never know till it happens.
Correction NOT SOA

3" spring lift and spring over? Wouldn't 33" tires look dinky?

I'm probably going with Kenda Klevers... They are an RT, and ugly.... No ATs exist in that size anymore. The stock wheels are unfortunately, severely limited. You basically have the Kendas, Nitto MTs, and Geolanders... another MT. I think thats about it... Toyo may have a MT as well. There aren't great options. It kinda stinks.

Everything you listed other than the Kenda in 33x9.5r15 size is a SxS tire.

Yokahama makes a 33x10.5 a/t LR C tire, as does BFG. Liking the look of your tires on your 40 is important, and I don't mean that facetiously. If you're after an AT tread, I'd go for the larger section width and cruise on happily.

The best tall skinny with a lift IMO is the Kanati mud hog, 35x10.5. Would be fine with your spring lift and extended shackles. My '69 40 just has a spring lift, no extended shackles and I think it looks great with the Kanati tires.

They are priced right too, IMO.

I don't like the idea of putting a 10.5 tire on a 5.5 rim. People do it, sure, but I don't think it is something I am gonna do. I want my tire to function as properly as possible and the 10.5s will crown. I think that is a bigger deal, at least to me, than some make it. It might look cool, but functionality is important. You are right on the other tires I listed... I didn't realize the nittos and others had no LT variant, my mistake. I just scanned real quick.

I really want to pull the trigger on a OEM wheel deal, but based on above I guess I need to find an alternative plan. Or deal with the Klever sidewalls and hope they keep producing them...

Any wheel suggestions?

Certainly personal preference, but I think this is made to be much bigger issue than it really is for how an FJ40 is engineered & driven. Any modern 10.5" tire on a factory 5.5" wheel will outperform the FJ40 it is carrying IMO.

Sounds like your on the path to spend the money on 16" wheels, and go for the 255/85/16 tire of choice to meet your wants.

Here is a good option for wheels to keep the style points high: For Sale - 6 Lug 16” Expedition Wheels - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/6-lug-16-expedition-wheels.1374091/#post-16207701

Some other options in 16" are the Nomad's and the Fifteen52.

(look like no longer available in grey in 16" rim diameter)

You could also get factory wheels widened, or just go with a steel wheel that meets your width requirements and retrofit hubcaps to fit for the look.

Good looking out. I’m too cheap for 1500 on wheels though. They look great. I was about to get 5 OEM wheels for so cheap. It’s hard to not be a cheapskate. I do like them so much. Seems like a good deal on the FJ company wheels. I don’t know why I’m resistant to them.

I'm right there with you on being a cheapskate. I almost grabbed those FJCO wheels I linked, but ran across a cool set of Dean Cross Country's for a smoking deal locally. They are another option for 16's, but not any cheaper than those options already presented above.

33x10.5 on factory wheels, I really think it's a look that is hard to beat. Good luck making the decision!

Lift springs and SOA. That sounds huge. Skinny 33’s. May be to small let’s see a pic of the cruser. I run stock springs SOA. And run 37 or 38 in tires. My buddy runs 33 skinny on his SOA. But he kept his fairly low. Here is my buddy’s on skinny 33’s. SOA. pic is my buddies rig They kind of small this is on his $500 dollar beater BJ42.

Your rig looks bad ass. Love it topless.

i just like the 9.5 look. I would also feel better about the width on the 5.5. Is airing down an issue with 10.5 on a 5.5? I’ve never gone out of recommendation nearly that much. I guess I just have to decide at some point.

1) factory wheels and Kendas and not look at them
2) factory wheels and mount up 10.5s
3) look for an affordable wider 15 wheel
4) different wheel diam

what do you plan to run on the 16s?

Man, this was the ultimate thread hijack…. Sorry about that.

Yea I’m really in decision paralysis about this. Putting 16s on feels wrong. 😂

I only have a few days left to get the deal on the OEMs so I need to decide.
It depends on what deal I find when it is time, but my favorite option currently is the Buckshot P78/16.

I also like the 255/85/16's Yoko MT's & Falken MT's.

Its all about looks for me, love the old school look of the Buckshots.

Consider that you may have some money into the stockers. They come primer black. You can rattle can them cheap DIY, but I am finding you can't get a 15" wheel powder coated for under $100 each here in CA. So the ~$100 factory black primered wheel isn't so cheap if you powder them.

Forgot to mention the City Racer 16" steel offering with hubcap clips. Essentially the same price as the alloy offerings though.

I have aired the Kanati 35x10.5 down to around 10psi on the stock wheels. Just driving around on the sand in Utah, no "wheeling". No issues. I do think these size of Kanati's may have a puncture prone sidewall if you are looking for something that you'll really beat on offroad. Another member tore a side wall just backing off his trailer and catching a ramp latch, and I lost one of these tires to road debris, the first time in my life losing a tire on a passenger vehicle.
