I started with a 24 oz ball peen hammer and a 3/8” punch and was not moving material anywhere. It was time to bring out the big dog. A 1-1/2” solid rod of some old axle shaft or something! It had a jagged edge on one end and a smooth edge on the other.

After 15-20min of a steady beat down with the rod. It moved metal pretty well. The rod probably weighed 15 mounds and when using the rods edge I could really pin point the steel I wanted to move.

After a good bit of persuasion…

The outside started shaping up. Back and forth at this point between the huge rod and the 3/8” punch and fine tuning.

Final result, I can live with this. I might even give the old girl a diff guard welded in place for future abuse.

Scraping gasket, caught myself with the old Benchmade. I knew I had made contact but the knife was super sharp and I didn’t know I was cut till I felt the dripping.

The old saying says something like blood sweat and tears!? Well I have 2/3 covered.

I left the rear axle covered in paint stripper. We’ll see how it goes tonight. I’ll strip the axle tomorrow.

Got a few more hours in the shop today.

Came in to see the paint stripper did wonders. I have used a different brand than this one in the past but this one did the trick just fine.

Came in and the whole axle and diff cover were chalky white.

I tossed a 3” wire cup wheel on the grinder and everything came off pretty easily. Probably 15-20 minutes in the axle. Another 5 on the diff cover.
IMG_2385.webp

I’ll hit it with some brake cleaner and a scotchbrite and get it in primer tomorrow.

I decided I would give the paint a once over with a proper polish. Again I’m using basic polishes that you can buy at any part store and a Meguires polishing pad.

It definitely refined the paint in a putting lipstick on a pig kind of way. I love cutting paint, it’s relaxing to me. I started to chuckle that I was buffing such worn out and weathered paint, but it’s a happy place for me.

“Better-ness” achieved.

Clean but no compound or polish.

Before I left I marked all the wheel cylinders and backing plates so the boys can’t mix up what goes where after rebuilding the wheel cylinders. Used a stamp kit as @scrapdaddy suggested here. Great tip.

This one happens to be #3 now.

I sprayed the rear backing plates and front axle down with the stripper before I left. Man that stuff is volatile and likely kills quite a few brain cells. I do wear a respirator when grind g and spraying stuff.

There’s a perfect example of what the factory rear bumpers were designed to do.

You mean the crash damage multiplier! haha, mine are boogered up on both sides. When I yank the rear bumper off I may try my hand and pound the rear quarter back out a bit. If I keep motivated I will likely make a rear bumper/tire carrier for this one.

You mean the crash damage multiplier! haha,
Crash damage multiplier 😆
+2 to damage per die per roll

You and your team just defeated the beholder and rescued the princess.
You all enter your FJ55 to leave the forest and head back to the village.
As you’re backing up *oops* you backed into a tree stump. I see your Landcruiser is equipped with rear damage multipliers.
Go ahead and roll two, six sided dies, four times for damage, each die adding a +2 damage multiplier per roll.
Ahh gee, 74 hit points of damage.

Now roll two, 10 sided dice once with a -15 probability of insurance coverage.

Thats why ya like Polish n Buffy 🤪🥴😵😵‍💫. Ya needs ta opin da Windas Broheim 🤪😉😏😘😘
You’re right! I spray it right before I leave for the day. Spray, open the bay doors for 5 minutes then JET!

Paint stripper did its job. Spent about an hour in the shop knocking out a few items. Mainly stripping the front axle and rear brake backing plates. Then a big cleanup and sweep. Good times in the shop.

Can barely see the dent anymore!

TJ,

My good news is epic. It demands its own post maybe even a parade and declaration of a national holiday! Haha, Gotta make sure it’s a done deal first.
Now I need to look for your other thread!

So I promised some BIG news, and things have panned out. I hope you are sitting down. :bounce:

Backstory, several weeks ago two more FJ55's popped up locally here in Montana. I haven't seen one for sale locally for years so to have two more pop up so close to home was bonkers. I didn't pay much attention since we have Project Homework rolling with some momentum but after a few weeks of FB Marketplace feeding me a steady diet of piggy pictures I reached out to the owner of a 1972 FJ55 in the same Green/White as Project Homework. I think we exchanged a few messages early on but as things were busy with my real job I didn't move on anything.

Fast forward and I reached out to the owner about selling me the drivers side mirror (figure it couldn't hurt) and he politely declined and shared he wasn't ready to part it out. As I started to price out some parts and realizing how rare some of the parts I need are I started to look at this FJ55 for sale through new lenses... a parts Cruiser. I called the owner and arranged for a meeting. I was greeted by a 200 series in the driveway and a nice 40 and 55 out back, a real Cruiserhead. Nice. I know most of the Cruiser heads in my area, I helped lead the 406 Cruisers TLCA chapter here in Montana for about 3 years and have met a ton of great folks. I hadn't met Travis yet.

We talked Cruisers, looked at the 55, looked over the 40, chatted some more and the FJ55 for sale had a long way to go to be a solid runner again. It appears that the old girl was T-boned on the drivers side and someone had replaced the doors and B pillar with parts from another FJ55. The front door closes the rear door no longer has a striker. Travis said he had driven it before and it had sat for a while waiting for attention. He mentioned he didn't want to mess with shipping the Cruiser or he could have had it sold several times over. He offered it to me at a REALLY generous price too! Being right before Christmas, the business of the season and family coming in and out, I thought my amazing wife would kill me if I bought another project so after some contemplation I politely passed on the FJ55 that was for sale.

A few days later Travis reached out to me and shared how he liked what I was doing with the boys and that he wanted to donate the Cruiser to "the cause" aka illness many of us have! I was floored. What generosity. I shared with the boys and they were stoked. Today we arranged to get some of the older boys out of the class and my 7th grade son and we went and plucked the ol' gal from the field and hauled it back to the school. I have been grinning all day. So rad. Cruiser people are the best people. I encouraged Travis to follow this thread, and I hope he'll chime in or at least get a kick out of our progress or failures.

Here it is... I am dubbing it Pork Rind. I am unsure if she'll run down the road again, but she will ensure Project Homework is as good as she can be by swapping parts to make the best Cruiser we can.

Right off the bat we know we will use:

  • Tail light lens
  • Rear Pass door handle
  • Tailgate
  • Front grill
  • Drivers mirror
  • Mid floor mat
  • Gauge cluster surround
  • Glove box door
  • 1F carb
  • Battery hold down
  • The fancy rear marker light trim
  • Possibly the front windshield
  • Heck the dash is about 1000x better than ours.
I am sure there is a ton more, but that is the low hanging fruit I see without even going through it.

The happy Crew.

A few more shots of where we are starting with this one.

I spy a nice dome light. And Pheasant feather. Good replacement glass for the rear quarter panel window. B-Pillar cut and splice.
IMG_2669.webp

Backseat needs to be explored, there is a good mid floor mat. Passenger side B Pillar, door card, lots of other things yet to discover.
IMG_2670.webp

The 1F looks mostly unmolested. We will likely swap fluids and see if we can get her to fire up. There are several classes filled of awesome on the road to get this fired up!
IMG_2674.webp

A treasure trove of a floor board.
IMG_2679.webp

I haven't tried the rear window yet. Battery seemed strong. I'll dig in with the boys soon.

How cool is that! With everything going on in the world, it feels good to here of some genuine kindness going on. 👍
I couldn't agree more.
