You just need to fab a tool to hold the flange in place while you torque.Mine are puking oil so they need to be addressed. I don't want to pull the carrier and have to reset the gears for a seal, so I will give it my best shot without pulling the pinion. I am unsure if I can get to the correct re-torque off the truck so I may have to wait a bit for the axles to be under it again. I'll pull the flange and give it the ol' looky loo.
That's a great picture. I love seeing the flag on the wall above the Pig - perfect!Proud of the boys, they done good!
We met our goal and got done one class session an ahead of schedule. Even had time to wipe down tools and clean up the shop. I am encouraged we made it.
Started cleaning up the diffs.

Lots of goo, grease, water, 90wt slurry. Mmmmmm. It’s tough to clean up. Gotta buy a case of brake cleaner.

I can see the bottom! Haha

Started on the degreasing of the front axle. How clean and or polished do you guys like to see the knuckle balls? Was thinking scotch bright pads and quick buff? I’ll dress the edges with a file and make sure to knock down any burrs.

Leaving her alone for a while, gonna focus on the 40 for a few days that I have off next week. Might sneak in to buff some paint. Our new engine bay hood light rocks.

Well now we have to ask what is your first favorite???I've seen guys lately starting to really shine them up, I can't see an advantage past a certain point of clean and burr free. Hoping for a 40* plus day this week to drag out the Hotsie for the axles and diffs. One quick pass with 250* steam/water at 3500 psi and most things are squeeky clean in about 30 seconds per square foot of surface. Its my second favorite machine.
That looks great!Got a few hours to work on the pig. Talk about polishing a turd. Haha
I used some Meguires Pro Speed Compound on a coarse cutting maroon foam pad from Meguires also. It’s a true compound and could use an actual polish and wax but I don’t think I’ll give any more time to the paint at this time. Maybe a sunny warm afternoon this summer in the shade.
The paint is super thin in spots and I was lifting a TON of color with each pass. I was excited to see the surface rusty spots didn’t lift in terms of color. I like the patina.
Hood before: cleaned but faded and dull.

Here’s a half and half shot after one pass.

I brought the axle housings, diffs, backing plates, drums and knuckles home to hit with the Hotsie as we’re going to be right around 50* for tomorrows high temp. I don’t expect to see those temps again for another 3-4 months so it’s GO TIME! 220* steam on a 50* day makes for some curious neighbors as to what the heck I’m up to! Haha
I also got some really cool news that I’m excited to share… just have to see if everything pans out and don’t want to jump the gun.
Merry Christmas friends.
I love the directional arrow on the front housing! Good training...Operation destroy my driveway is accomplished.
I live my Hotsie, it’s a pressure washer that cranks up to 250* and cleans parts fast, and wrecks your driveway with grease and tar and oil and paint, but sacrifices need to be made.
Brought the parts back from the shop to the house. I think this means I need a 45 in my life!?

You cleaned the thirds too?Laid everything out on the driveway, gotta keep some order on the brake parts so I know where everything g goes when I’m done. Then I fired up the Hotsie.
The cardboard seems to soak up some grease.

Sprayed with degreaser… that’s sure to kill grass too.

Pumkins cleaned up nice! But here they’re a greasy mess

Fire away. Steam clean, spray, wipe off my face shield… repeat.

Well now we know what your favorite piece of equipment is!Things came out nice and clean. I smell like diesel cleaner, I’m soaked but I have a big smile.
Even snuck the MMO oil injector in there. The heat melts right all the caked on gunk right off. Only a tube bender makes me smile more than the Hotsie.

Axles came out great. I just gotta’ scuff and paint them now.

The brakes seem to be in better shape than I thought. I’ll have the drums turned and buy rebuild the wheels cylinders as a project.
View attachment 4054530
Diffs will need a little more handwork, they take some abuse with slinging 90wt oil. But for the most part they’re clean.

Brakes look a good bit better z any tricks for keeping which cylinder goes where for disassembly?

After a wash down eveything gets a once over with compressed air and left to air dry. I’ll show a few more detailed pics when they get moved back to the shop.
Don't forget F vs R.I think the cylinders are marked, but to make use a metal number & letter stamp DT and DB, PT and PB, just one way.
