I really want to try and make this event! I don't have much excuse only living 2.75 hours away...!
2.75 miles in an 80 Series is only 5 gallons of gas so no, you don't have an excuse. :)

Hmm I live in Just outside Oak Ridge about 20 min from winrock. I Don't want to take my hj45 on the trails as it is a princess. But hanging out sounds fun... 23rd is game day.. but it is UMASS lol

Just registered. Looking forward to meeting everyone and seeing some sweet 70 series!

I just registered as well. Now there are 2 different 40 series rigs coming to crash the party!

This is looking fun. Maybe I can talk the mrs into coming or just bring my 4 legged sidekicks for an adventure in the 40

The way work is I won't know until much closer to the date but I am kinda scared I'll catch 70 fever so I may need to look away.

Looks like a fun group of people going.

You won't be able to look away. No one has that kind of discipline. :)

Peter, Sam and I greatly appreciate those that have stepped forward to sponsor this event. Without their support, many of the things we have planned for the event, wouldn't happen.
If there are others that have an interest in sponsoring we would be glad to hear from you.
....Thanks

I spent last weekend on the first of two planned trips to setup routes for the rides. Am pleased to say I have the first day about 95% tied out (ran out of time on one day and got to bingo fuel on the next). The second day's trails are essentially lined out.

The plan now is for Friday's ride to be in the lines of an Expedition type ride with mild terrain and great scenery. I have laid out a rough path of trails on Windrock and public lands that will have us covering a lot of ground with minimal repeat views / tracks.

Saturday will be more of a trails day and will feature a little more aggressive terrain. I will finalize the route plan for this day when we see the weather as there are a couple of climbs that water will shift the difficulty from interesting / moderate to WTH ...

The next post will be very long, but will detail a lot of work done by Peter, Charles, and me.

Some general details of the gathering ....

So now that that part is over, let’s get to the fun stuff.

A Little History

In 2015, three 70 series Land Cruiser owners concocted a scheme to put faces and names to the handles we knew on the forums at IH8MUD.com. The original plan was to get a few like-minded folks together in a relatively central location in the Southeastern US to spend a day or two in the woods, ogle each other’s trucks, enjoy some fellowship, and perhaps enjoy a cold adult beverage together. The first event was held in Cullman, AL and went well enough to consider another get together.

So, these same three idjiots decided to do it again. In September 2016, a similar rag-tag group met in Oak Ridge, TN and explored parts of Windrock Park. A good time was had by all, including a tree root on trail 52. This second event was deemed a success.

Being hard headed, these same three residents of the Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York decided to give this thing yet another go. So here we are …

What do we have planned?

First, this weekend in September is still merely a gathering of like-minded folks who want to enjoy themselves in the mountains of East Tennessee in their (predominately) 70 series Toyota Land Cruisers. If this year is a success, and the padded walls of our rooms are thick enough, and we can scrounge up some additional help, we might make this a full-on sanctioned TLCA event for 2018 …

So, without further ado, what we have planned is:

Thursday 9/21: Travel day to Oak Ridge.

Those arriving early enough are welcome to tag along with the trail leader
for final last-minute scouting / route verification. We would suggest that
the folks planning to ride Friday with the escorted group purchase their
appropriate permits Thursday evening.

Friday 9/22: Escorted trail ride or trail rides on your own, or tour Oak Ridge, the Secret
City on your own.

The escorted trail ride Friday will be focused on lots of miles of dirt, a few miles of pavement, some easy-moderate challenges, lots of scenery, some history, and a general good time. The route will be biased towards an expo / overlanding route and will include trails on Windrock Park and North Cumberland WMA north of Oak Ridge. Our goal for this day is a maximum of 25 vehicles. The final route and options have not yet been nailed down, but we are close and rest assured, if the weather cooperates, it will be a relaxing and enjoyable day. Please be ready to leave the Comfort Inn parking lot at 8:30 and the Windrock Park Lot A at 9:00. This latter location may change prior to the event when the final route is nailed down. It will be communicated through MUD and Facebook.

For those wanting a bit more challenge, we can point you to some suggested routes to take.

There are no formal evening activities planned, but we assume that there will be many lies told at informal gatherings ….

Saturday 9/23: Escorted trail ride or trail rides on your own, or tour Oak Ridge, the Secret
City on your own.

The escorted trail ride Saturday will be focused on trails from easy-moderate to moderate-challenging (with some spots tougher than others). Harder alternatives will be generally available. At the time of the initial draft, the route for Saturday is entirely on trails in Windrock Park so WMA permits will not be required for Saturday. If this changes, it will be communicated through MUD and Facebook.

For those wanting a bit more challenge, we can point you to some suggested routes to take.

There will be a catered BBQ dinner at the Comfort Inn at 6:30 (The catering lady will be there at 6pm to set up so 6:30 seems like a good start time) and a raffle for FABULOUS prizes following dinner.

Sunday 9/24 Travel day. No rides planned.

About the Area

Oak Ridge has a deep history and was founded during WWII as one of three sites where work on the Atomic Bomb was completed. If you head West on the main highway out of town, the sharp-eyed driver will notice the old guard houses with gun ports in the walls.

The area has played and continues to play an important piece in the regions energy production. Much of the area that we will be riding has a long history of coal mining – both deep shaft mines and more recent strip and open-pit mining. In the recent past, a wind farm has been installed on the top of Buffalo Mountain in Windrock Park and we will see dozens of oil and methane wells during our rides as well as remnants of coal mining operations.

About the terrain: The mountain trails here generally have a very heavy clay surface with lots of rock ledges thrown in for good measure. When the trails are dry, all but the leaders will eat a lot of dust and you may very well wonder why the trail we are riding got a “moderate” rating. Add a little water to the mix, and you will wonder why it got “only” a “moderate” rating. This makes route planning interesting to say the least and we will keep a weather eye out and modify our plans as necessary.

There is a lot of wildlife in the area and we have a very real chance of seeing deer, bear, turkeys, bobcats, and elk.

What will the idjiots do with any left over money?

In the event that raffle proceeds exceed meal and other costs associated with the event (rent of the meeting room, raffle tickets, other supplies, etc.), the excess will be split 50/50 and donated to TLCA and TreadLightly.

Wow. You really used your google-fu to find that old pic about my time touring with the Grateful Dead.

And no actually everyone already thinks they are a Toyota parts expert it seems.

I assume my occupation will be outsourced to a droid eventually and I'll be back to digging ditches.
