Have you looked into Drake Safes? Very well built, heavy duty, and custom sizes/features available. Made in Roxboro. He's got a booth at the GSO gun show this weekend.

Thanks, R.K.

Will look them up.

Had some spare time and ammo so I decided to take the .40FS and send some lead down range. For even only shooting pistols a handfull of times, I think it's valid to say that this gun is very accurate. Granted it is used and I am unaware if it has stock internals. The first pic is at 25 yards and the second is at 10 yards. Nevertheless, I think it's a solid gun.

I like the looks of those. They only appear to come in 60" height. Not a requirement but I like the idea of 72" since I can go more "up" and less "wide"
Look at their other lines. I have a 72" tall Lincoln model from Liberty - a factory blem with a paint blemish on the rear right corner and on the bottom (against the floor). Saved me almost a G. ;)

I'll be in the market for a new safe once we are moved to the area, too. I've always heard to get one with the hinges on the inside, but don't know much about safes at all.

@tpham32
Eagle Guns is about 5 minutes from my house. Next time you want to shoot let me know and I'll meet you there.

I had no idea, sounds good will do! Whats your number?

No firsthand experience but I've always heard that AMSEC was the bees knees - not pretty or ornate but solid as hell.

I have recently been hearing lots of great things about a little safe company in Chesterfield, SC called Griffin Enterprises. They offer all kinds of safes (concrete lined as well) and from what I hear their quality and pricing is top notch. It would definitely be worth looking into. https://www.facebook.com/griffinsafes

AMSEC safes are very good as are Fort Knox, but their price points are wayyy up there. The Fort Know I replaced with a Liberty cost as much in 1991 as i paid for the much larger Liberty in 2013.

The thing to remember about "gun safes" is that they are listed as Residential Security containers. They will stop a less than determined thief, but they are not at the same levels of security as a jewelers safe.

These guys are right on about Liberty and Drake.

I like my hinges on the outside. Remember the hinges don't have anything to do with security, there are steel locking bolts on that side of the door too. They just carry the door as it opens and if they're on the outside it can open farther, usually 180°. If they're external it's easy to take the door off moving the safe in too.

Thanks!

In my case, while theft is on the radar the primary purpose of this safe is child safety. My use of the word "upgrade" is misleading since it largely is an upgrade in volume and relates less to "how hard is this baby to crack open". That said, since I'm in the market for a new safe it would be silly not to step up both fire and theft security if finances allowed.

Sam, you may have already said ... where were you able to find a scratch/dent item for purchase?

Will shoot you a PM later today

You need to come to Ramsuer for the shoots I do with the revolutionary war vets of America. Out to 500 yards and the real shooters go iron sights. I'll be on the m1. If you're interested let me know.

I might take you up on that, but I'm not going back to iron sights now, not with this one :D

Reporting in on final decision. Fortress calls this a 60 gun safe, i.e. it really holds about 10. No complaints .... quality is ok, fitment is good. I like that the programmable entry can be anything between 4 and 8 digits. Shelves are the "to be expected" press board. Only issue was it arrived dirty. Looked like they were cutting sheetrock at the same place they were doing final assembly. Definitely recommend the 72" height.

Nice!

The sheetrock dust is not that unusual since most of the safe manufacturers use fireproof sheetrock for the fire insulation. I had to pull the interior out of my safe and give the inside a good vacuuming before I put the first firearm in it.

Had a chance to take my Glock 19 and Springfield 1911 to the range for the first time since putting on new sights on President's Day.

This one was the warm-up target from 3 yds (left) and 5 yds (right) with the Ruger SR-22 (top), Glock 19 (middle), and Springfield (bottom).

This one was about 6-7 yds. with the Glock. The range distances weren't well marked. Just a hair low, but I'm pretty happy with the results.

Same distance, after adjusting my aiming point a bit. This is a mix of the Glock and my Ruger SR-22.

PDHSC off of Tryon. Was supposed to go with a buddy from work, but he had to back out at the last minute due to schools letting out early. I thought about calling you, but I was already on my way there and didn't know if you had President's Day off.

Nah, I had to work, was just curious where you went! I haven't been to PDHSC yet. Worth the trip?
