Apparently somebody is still a
little touchy about losing a wheel......

Losing the wheel was the easy part, it was the $hit show the ensued shortly thereafter toped with the lengthy repair of my yet unfinished pig that would elevate this into the category of “touchy”.

In all seriousness the entire event with the wheel is behind me now and I can laugh about it, Gordobe stayed behind to make sure we had a ride if needed and was a huge help getting my pig back down the hill and if we ever end up going to another outing Gordobe is attending I will be bringing some delicious adult beverages to share. ;)

New “super” HX30W Holset turbo is mostly on and so far I like it better than the B/W EFR 6074 turbo, much better low RPM boost and lower EGT’s with the short test drive.

I had to modify the compressor end to match the B/W turbos but I neglected to get photos, I also needed to change the turbine side to the B/W 3” V-band. Everything got coated with NIC high temp ceramic coating.

Pictures below of the Holset vs new B/W style 3” outlet.

I set aside a couple hours this morning to install the turbo but it’s a pig so a couple of hours was not enough. As it turns out the 4” intake even though I shortened it still interferes with the A/C pump so I needed to whittle out a 1” spacer to move the turbo down a bit. Hopefully tomorrow morning I can button it up in a couple hours..

The Noxyde is holding up well on both the inside as well as the underside, it has been pressure washed several times to remove heavy mud and so far looked like a good product.

Cool. I have three big dogs and was either going to rhino line it or was thinking about the noxyde with the glass stuff you put in it for noise. I didn't want the dogs ruining the paint on the inside.

Nice...

Nice to see all the phenomenal work you still doing to the beast. Hope to run into you this year.

Thanks Gordobe,

I drug my feet registering for Cruse Moab so I’m on a waiting list for the San Rafael Swell

overnight run, if we make the cut we’ll be at Cruse Moab and hope to see you there.

On our last big adventure to Moab during CruiserFest my transfer case high/low selector stuck in low, some of you might remember Kurt and his magic screwdriver that saved the day and pried it back into high so I could finish the trip. Well fast forward to seven months later and it dawned on me that I should get off my lazy butt and do something about it if for some reason I get picked off the waiting list for Cruse Moab I’m not trying to get it done the day before we head to Utah.

Wasn’t as bad as I was making it out to be and we had it back in by noon.

Headed out for a test drive to some property that’s for sale to check it out and see if the old pig would hold together, this picture shows the lot, the pig is parked were the garage would be and I’m standing were the house would be looking out.

J Mack,

What do you think the problem was.

It was a combination of things, first when I made all my motor/trans mounts I used gutted cases to help keep the weight down and not being familiar with the Toyota split case I overlooked the high/low shifter location and didn’t have clearance for it. Second when I installed the engine, transmission and transfer case for the final time hooking the transfer case linkage was one of the last things I did so by the time I discovered it I was already behind the eight ball for making it to CruiserFest and the decision was made to reach in with a sawsall and remove a section of bracing that was interfering with the shift selector. Third I underestimated the toque of the 4BT so the first time I was driving the pig in low range was on black dragon trail with the Moab CruiserFest group and when I went to shift back into high range the selector shaft had contacted the remainder of the bracing and backed the nut off the pinch bolt and allowed the selector shaft to slip down into the case and disengage from the selector sleeve. With the help of a screw driver we could pry up on the linkage and get the case into gear but I needed to make a more permanent fix.

I have all new hardware on the linkage and the floor has been move enough to allow for the toque of the engine, fingers crossed I can now move onto the last few things on this pig and jump into finishing the other pig..

I guess I'm late on this, but here's a nice fix for the Hi-Lo shifter being too sloppy. Transfer Case Compression Spring Picture

They put in a stiffer spring to make the shifts have a crisp feel and stay in gear. Mine shifts, but not with a firm feel. Just a good thing to do. Glad you're working through the problems.

So how do you like the new turbo?

New turbo is just “good”, it does everything one needs but falls short of “super”, my other two turbos made more power but the Super 30 looks to be a better match, the EFR6258 $hit the bed at 2000 miles and the EFR 7064 lacked the low end power.

I still have more than enough power to do anything “needed” in the pig, for reference our steepest longest hill in my area is ID 55: Horseshoe Bend Hill it has steep grade for 6 miles. Max grade is 7% and I can drive the entire hill in fifth gear going min 60 MPH and accelerate to 80MPH at will making 35 LBS of boost and EGT’s never got over 1300°. I could have gone faster if the hill was straight and not so curvy but you get the idea.

At some point I might try to build a Garrett with custom housings but I have quite a few projects that require time and money right now.

Sounds perfect to me :)

Probably true unless you’re like me and have a burning desire to make break $hit power then question your sanity after you break $hit.

Had I not driven with the other turbos I would have assumed that this is good as it gets for a single, now that I know I’m leaving something on the table it will eat at me until I do something about it.. :bang:

That's funny! Man, it seems like I'm always fixing something, not to mention I'm a mech engr, so that's what I do for a living as well. It gets old sometimes. It's inspiring reading through this and seeing your tenacity and perseverance. That fellow boots4 is the same as you in that regard! Great thread!!!! Thx for sharing!!!

Memories from my past. I drove it several time a year when in college on my way home to Grangeville.
