There are currently no fire restrictions for 3 of the 4 counties that span Lake City, Ouray, Telluride and Silverton. Hinsdale County has state 1 restrictions from what I understand.

The Ouray County website says that they are in stage 1 but that info is almost a year old and the fire watch service and west slope fire states otherwise.

Camp fires are allowed even during the bans in camp ground like Koa or state camp grounds. in short Government wants their revenue by making you pay to camp if you want a fire .

I’m not sure what other leads are doing but I have planned my trips already with early start times as I want to be prepared. I’ve submitted those times to Rory.

As of 5/22 there is a stage 1 restriction in the San Juan national forest

For what it's worth we camped in the Salida Ranger District of the San Isabel NF a couple weekends ago. We were also within Chaffee County. Neither jurisdiction had fire restrictions and there aren't any statewide. It's going to be a matter of localized rainfall this summer I think.

Currently Ouray County has a burn ban on red flag days and fire weather watch days. Hinsdale County has a Stage 1 burn ban in the southern part of the county only. San Miguel only has a ban on privately owned land, but not public land. San Juan County appears not to have a ban, although sometimes these rural county websites aren't updated or the info is buried.

GMUG NF (Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison) doesn't appear to have a ban. San Juan National Forest DOES have a Stage 1 burn ban, meaning no fires unless the fire is in a permanent metal or concrete fire pit, fueled by liquid or gas that can be turned off (cook stoves or portable fire pits), or a fully enclosed stove (for hot tents). So if you were theoretically camping on NF land outside of Silverton, which lies within both San Juan County and the San Juan National Forest, you could not have an open fire except as described above - for a given location any burn ban from any jurisdiction overrides all jurisdictions that don't have a burn ban. In this example - camping on NF land outside of Silverton - the NF burn ban is enough to override the lack of burn ban from the county.

Please y'all don't come to Colorado and set the state on fire. It's going to be a tense year with a very high risk of a massive fire due to the lack of moisture accumulated this past winter. These conditions will change before August, so it's good to keep apprised of the situation. Typically the KOA will be good to go - permanent metal fire rings on private property - but I know I'll be checking before I head to Ouray, not just for the KOA but also because we camp on the way to and from.

I purchased and have made small propane fire pits for when burn bans are in effect. Unless it is a severe ban, propane generated flames are generally accepted but use sense and read the rules.

There was nothing insulting about what I said, it's just simple common sense advice for folks who might - for the first or second time - be coming from places with higher humidity & precipitation who don't really deal with wildfires. I grew up in the midwest and moved to Colorado 20+ years ago. When I got here I wasn't even really aware of wildfires because it just wasn't something that ever happened in Ohio, and I've now watched Forest Service rangers every year finding out of state folks with campfires going during burn bans. The thought of "well MY fire isn't going to cause a problem during this burn ban because I'm careful, it's not a big deal" can have huge consequences. People don't know until they know.

Ultimately if you feel like my statement doesn't apply to you, then it doesn't apply to you.

Cool post. My grandpa had quite a few stories from Creede back in this era. My dad took these pictures at the 100th year anniversary in 1992 and I recently remastered them so that I can give him these shirts for Father’s Day.

Broski .. CT is spot on for most of the a$$hats who visit Colorado. I can't count how many fires I have put out over the years that people just leave burning and or hot and just leave. It is sooooooooooooooooooooo dry out here right now. It's going to be a bad year . Please y'all don't come to Colorado and set the state on fire.. Richard pretty please with sugar on top hahaha... We have the army here they set a fire just about every week it seems like .

I’m sure that nobody from Colorado ever had a illegal campfire during a fire ban. Has to be them dam out of staters
My bad.

And let not forget that I Hale from one of the worst fire States there is.
I spend a lot of time in the Sierra where theres constantly fire bands.
