Build RevISK’s ‘80 FJ40 - A Girl Named Norman

Stated this over on the “What have you done … lately” thread but want it here for a q and a.

The city racer Fuji carb is in.
Used a later 2F valve cover from Proffitt (a dang deal @$50) that took a wee bit of cleaning.
Did the VC to accommodate the air cleaner I traded Jimmy @CenTXFJ60 some horses for.

Easier to find the wrong valve cover than the right air cleaner.

My patron saint of Norman @OlYellr contributed the linkage and Nate @mattressking continues to be a voice of reason. So far so better than the Weber but most people know this.

Still figuring out the tuning a bit (a lot) and know I’m going to have a float adjustment soon. Will be adding an OEM one per Nate.

Running fairly well despite fuel being way below the middle of the window. Yanked out my homemade brackets in favor of the linkage, interesting approach Mr T. Anyway, pictures:

Looking great!

Seems silly but that’s a good place to start.

I’ve considered getting the adapter to go from Weber to oem air cleaner.

At least then it hides the Weber which seems to work as good as I can ask.

If I fix the Weber it’ll be with efi, and not the sniper flavor.

I kind of forgot about our Texas texts.. but it’s in the back of my mind, just unlikely to happen in 2024.

It’s been awhile since I’ve checked in here.
Lots of drama with the FJ62 formally known as Paul, now officially known as Paul, The Eater Of Transmissions.

Norman is in need of love, got the classic blinkers don’t blink, bypass hose bandaid and clutch is slipping a wee. Was hoping to utilize Paul while I dove into Norman but that plan is toast so here I am.

Really want to knock a Big Bend trip out this winter with my boy and @OlYellr (and whomever else) and by golly, I’m going to make it happen.

The whole, “while you’re in there” thing puts me at:

- clutch
- oil pan gasket
- rear main seal
- t case rebuild

What else?

Some good mud energy going on with Paul, TEOT, but that’s more of a long game.

If I can sell a small limb or organ, I should be able to knock out the above in a long weekend.

Here’s a picture of Norman next to a bug my daughter saw and is now in love with.

Bug is for sale!!!

Ha.
Sign in window said $8,500.
Sign in the back on the floorboard said $12,500.
Daughter is 9 this week, we’ve got time to find a project bug.
She really fell in love with them when she saw one at AJ’s meetup a few weeks ago. One of the neighbors had a beautifully restored ’68 split window.

I was hoping she’d like the late ‘70s celica’s I was pushing but 🤷🏽

I think that Bug is her style.

I’m assuming pilot bearing is part of the clutch package ( and throw out bearing)?

Buy once, cry once.

Had no idea they've become so expensive! The last one I bought (in 1983?) was $700 for a good runner with a bit of rust. One of my sons bought one in 2003 or '04 for $1,200 if memory serves.

Clutch kit includes pilot and throw out bearings, yes.

Forgot to mention on YELLR, same blinker issue. Removed the fused cleaned it a bit and they would work for a while. Got Deoxit and used some on contacts and the time between working vs not is longer.

Someday I will remove the fuse box and clean it per Coolerman’s site. What I encounter with it/them

Edit: on the passenger side, one of my wires is dead (takes 3 wires for OEM) learned that aftermarket has two wires. So spliced it to run off two wires and good to go there. Total time suck though.

I bought one in ‘89/90 for $900. It needed about that to get it safe enough to drive. That thing was awesome.

I’m basically looking for what we would be looking for in a 40 project: rust free, good compression and slow boat the rest. Sure wish she liked Celica’s though…

This won't be the last time you disagree... :)

Would love to tag along, I pick up my 2F this weekend. I plan to work remote for a week, office work in the morning, engine install in the afternoon, to get it done.

If the planets align we could be there.

Amazing.
That would be awesome. Realizing that Norman actually needs more work than Paul to make that trip. Maybe.
I could be the support cruiser. Hopefully will have my Datsun trailer running by then.

I need to pick a target.

As I’m standing in the 20 degree temps filling up my 200 I start dreaming of big bend.. I mean I would much rather take me 40.. however the 200 isn’t a bad option to drive 3,000 miles

🤔

Drive it here, then we'll take the Eater Of Transmissions, Yellr and whoever else we can talk into it?

That is definitely an idea. The built 200 would kill the vintage vibes with its seat heaters and comfort.
Comfort and convenience are overrated.

Just noticed this thread is classified as a BUILD now. Well sheet, I better get back to building.

I don’t have a firm date that I can go, but I will be ready in Jan. Did a lot of frame cleaning yesterday- have some odds and end to do after as well. I found a leak around timing cover.

Anyway, I have a work trip to TX potentially in early 2025- so I might be able to combine the two. I’m too long overdue to calling.

Being single, I’d tell people Yellr is cheaper than a GF… now I don’t know. Think I crossed that threshold and need face the fact that that math doesn’t add up anymore.
