Still looking for some input from you experts out there on this butterfly and how to get the secondary shaft unstuck.

I did a google search for stuck carburetor shafts and there are tons. General consensus is time, lubricant and maybe a little heat. But most all said they were ultimately successful. So the bigger question, is the butterfly correct? I guess once I get the shaft free I will screw it in place and see if it moves. 🤪

The fact that it is stuck probably has something to do with why the butterfly is missing :)

I bet the PO took it out once he couldn't get it to move.

I believe I am the PO that removed the butterfly. Well my shop mechanic that is. I vaguely remember us discussing a rebuild and then he stalled like most of his tasks which is why he is no longer my shop mechanic.

Screw it in firmly and make sure it doesn't bind.
I would also be sure and listen to @FJ40Jim on anything Cruiser related!
Loving your build by the way, very cool truck.
I hear you. He @FJ40Jim is definitely the cruiser guru. The man knows his stuff for sure.

The parts I didnt see in the disc pics was the birfields, lockouts and shims. Shims can come with a kit. You need to id what knuckles you have. If you go to FAQs at the top of this section and scroll down to frt ends, the 1st 2 threads will help with id'ing your parts
@pb4ugo , @4Cruisers and @Poser I need some help with how to do the front disc conversion. I understand what I need is Birfields and front hub lockouts. Lockouts can be Aisin or Warn I guess. What I have no clue on is what size Barfield’s are required. I saw mention that I need to get rid of my existing large splined Birfield, but how do I know which Barfield will fit the existing 71 axel? How do I know what Barfield’s will work with the parts I have. Also, will a FJ60 vented rotor bolt up to what. Have? Here are pics again show the conversion parts I purchased.

IIRC, mini-truck Birfields '79 through '85, FJ40 Birfields '81 through '83, FJ60 Birfields '81 through '87 - all will work with your '71 inner axles. FJ60 vented rotors will work with any of those. I also used '91 4-Runner IFS calipers, but other years will work. I'd recommend Aisin locking hubs. For the steering arm on the drivers side I used the mini-truck arm with the extra section on the rear cut off and ground down to match the contour of the passenger side mini-truck steering arm.

You can also run earlier fine spline birfields off 40/55, you’ll just need long bodied Aisin/Warn hubs to account for the extra length. Note - if you go with the late 40/60 birfs you’ll have to clearance the bell a bit with the grinder.

Lower inner surface, it doesn't take much grinding.

What is the spline count I am looking for?

This is what I was told. Simple amount grinding required. What I need to fully understand is what Birfields to order. I currently have Warn locking hubs so want to be able to reuse those, hopefully. What is confusing and I have read a bunch but still do t get it, if my current 71 inner axle shafts are 6 spline how do I change to the later 30 spline? How does a 30 spline go into a 6 spline hub? Man I’m confused.

This article explains some of it but not enough for a dummy like me to understand.

Go to FAQs at the top of the 40 section and scroll down to frt ends. Read the 1st two threads, , they will talk about what knuckles you have and id lockout differences. You won't be able to use your lockouts. They ate 6 spline(drum brake). Disc brake birfields are fine spline. They come in long and short versions. The threads I mention will walk you thru this. You will also need to figure out what tre's you will have to use. Folks will help walk you thru this. You will need to get knuckle kits and probably borrow or buy a centering tool. Do you have a FSM?

I have read the FAQ several times and maybe I’m just slow but I’m still confused. Is the six splines on the outside? So another words when I pull my hubs will that be the first splines I see? If I need a new lockout hub I will get the Aisin hub. Or maybe take the Warn LO hubs from my 82 and get new Aisin ones for my 82.

Well I figured since I have read the FAQ several times and still wasn’t getting it, the best way to learn was to dig in. So I tore apart the right side and now I see what is referred to as the six splines. The outside of the Birfield. My inners axles are 30 spline at dif. and I think 27 at the Birfield. So I see I need a 30 spline Birfield that accepts a 27 spline axle. Not sure if it is short or long but my current Birfield looks short to me. It measures 230mm or 9”. And an Aisin locking hub for the 30 spline Birfield. I will do some checking for parts now. Anyone has any good ones they want to sell let me know. I am not sure my 6 Birfield is original. Everything inside looks like new. There were some nos. etched on the part. See pic.
