Just finished this today, case for the GF's mom veteran burial flag. This one is spalted curly hard maple. Joints were done with Domino tenons.

I'm honored and humbled to make these for those that served, it's too bad they never get to see them.

I don’t know what domino tenons are, but quality is quality.😊

Finishing touches on the decorative fence.
I wanted to top the end wings with a unique crown. I had seen this cross many years ago at a church built in the early 1900’s. The campus was adorned with wrought iron forged creations. This design caught my eye back in 89 when I first saw it.
Sourced a section of 5-5/15” schedule 80 pipe.
Cut six 1” wide rings.
IMG_7902.jpeg

Sectioned one ring into six pieces to create this.
IMG_7903.jpeg

After grinding and blending we have this.

The far end of the fence.
IMG_7906.jpeg

The driveway side wing also got a crown as well as address numbers and the community logo for “Rocking K estates”.
IMG_7913.jpeg

Using peroxide, vinegar and salt in a handheld pump sprayer and the entire fence is now rust patina.
The third crown was welded atop of the lamp post.

Have a great hump day!

Man love those gate toppers 💪

Made a address marquee for a friend.

The base plates were cut and laid out with a centerline (CL). The numbers also got a centerline followed with two .248" holes. The numbers were then placed over the base plates with the CL lined up. Transfer punched the hole locations onto the base plates and drill using the same bit. 1/4" round bar was cut 1.250" long. The idea was to tap in the small rod sections into the base plate hole keeping the end of the rod sub-flush for a rosette weld aka plug weld. This way the weld can be ground smooth and blended in without removing the entire weld. This technique will give a clean finish with no visible weld joint.

The layout.
IMG_7944.jpeg

This shows the eight being set up for plug welding. All the rods were placed along the CL to maintain a clean finish. Each number got two rods.
A close look will show the number just proud of the rod allowing for grinding and blending and still have integrity. The torpedo level kept the numbers matching the base plate in both directions. The slight press fit by using a .248" drill allowed simple adjustments to hold fast until plug welded.

A hot rosette weld is required for good penetration.
IMG_7948.jpeg

After grinding and blending the number looks clean.
IMG_7949.jpeg

The finished marquee will be set in concrete with the lower blank panel bottom edge 2" above grade.
IMG_7955.jpeg

A clean look imo.
Happy Memorial Day! Always remembering those who sacrificed for our Republic!

Needed an odd size E-wheel, we got one with tiny wheels.
Then modified some extendable grip pliers and created this.

And here is the tiny wheel.

It works even better then expected.

I have 2 old B&D Workmates, one I got new as a gift in the early 80s, and another I found at a flea market for $10 that was missing the movable jaw. Very handy to have. I made a jaw out of a piece of scrap 2x6, and used that thing many times. It was time for a new set of jaws, so made a new set using some leftover quarter sawn ash, with hard maple edging on the clamping edge. Now the thing is almost too nice to use...

so, I got a weakened Rig'd tire swingout (megafit for full size trucks) from a buddy on a steal. (Sure it's a bit big for the GX, but wutchyagunnado :flipoff2: )

But it has stress cracks they've never before seen.

So ... I'll drill out to stop the cracks,

then cutting wheel the cracks, clean them up, sand off the PC and weld them up, then add plates to reinforce it and glob them on well, grind, paint, enjoy!

Another woodworking project completed today. Cookbook holder for my daughter, for her birthday. Vertical is curly maple and black walnut. Rest part is adjustable to thickness, or it can also hold an iPad/tablet/phone, so I made a slot for charger cord. Front piece is rosewood.

A bit of lathe work. I enjoy knurling - it gives things a finished appearance. In this case to show the end with the left hand threads.
