Power Steering Pump and Hose Replacement - FAQ

Arrival of the new PS pump gear. I continue to be amazed at the speed Partsouq ships. Dropped at my door at 830 this morning. Left Dubai last Wednesday evening.

I sure hope this fixes the whine. If it does not, I guess it must be the oil pump gear which to my eye, also looks to be boogered up when I stuck my endoscope down there - BUT, with the PS pump pulled out of the block, the whine is gone. I guess at the least, if the whining sound is less, I will call that a win.

I'm wondering if the depth things are meshing is incorrect for some reason since I have a whine and everybody else with boogered up PS pump gears gets a tick. I'll keep you posted when I install it today after my worky job. FINGERS HEAVILY CROSSED.

Do you remember the part number for this gear? I can’t seem to find it on the Toyota parts sites.

What tool are you guys using to remove the old PS pump gear? I read back a few pages and saw Wits End had a plastic tool to remove it but as you know Wits End is no longer around. Is there a similar tool that you can buy these days?

I used a small 3-jaw puller. 2-jaw will also work. You can rent from AutoZone, etc.

Believe the plastic tool was for holding the gear when you put the nut back on. You can use a big channel locks and a towel instead.

A leather glove and a strap wrench.

Wrap the glove around the gear, then the strap wrench and hit it with an impact.

Don’t lose the dog locking pin thing.
Also don’t hammer the gear on the spindle while reinstalling like some YouTuber show. Just torque it down to spec like the FSM states

As that YouTuber I am mildly offended 😉

I’m in the middle of replacing the PS reservoir and need some assistance and reconnecting the PS cooler lines. I didn’t realize how brittle this was until I stared yo move it around. Rather than buying the whole unit new from Toyota. I want to buy the hose going from the cooler to the PS reservoir. Has anyone else had issues not going OEM? Also, what size would work?

Been discussed years ago (in this thread and others); that hose comes with the power steering cooler as an assembly (44420-60221)
so your options now are to use Bulk 3/8" ATF/PS compatible hose with the correct size clamps for that hose OD.

Tip: not a parts expert but in general when looking at a parts diagram when you see an assembly of parts like the cooler with attached hoses (marked 44420 above) with just one part number (44420-60221) for all of it, that generally indicates that's the only way to order it from Toyota (as an Assembly often listed as "Assy") ie: not available as individual parts.

FWIW

3/8 is too tight. It's actually 10mm.

there is a Tacoma hose that fits nicely. 44412-04010

@cruiserdan is of course, right. ❤️🤠
That said, I’m terribly unsophisticated and have made 3/8 work just fine on several occasions. There’s not a lot of pressure in that line.

Agree (of course) with CDan, 3/8" hose = 9.5mm. IME it's difficult to find true 10mm hose in bulk so with some lube the 3/8"/9.5mm often can be made to fit.

Here's another recent discussion for a replacement hose:

44412-60280 will work for the short leg.

Does anyone happen to know what size and pitch of the top bolt on the high pressure hose? It's the one with the 17mm head accessed from the top.

Tried to install new high pressure hoses this weekend but can't get that one part to thread. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
