Installed rear wheel bearings, seals and 3rd member and put the axles put under it tonight. Trying to get a little something done every day.

Hmmm...

I realized when I pulled the wheel bearings out that the axle tube was pretty grungy inside and had a spot on the top with rust. Sanding pad on a stick in a drill to the rescue! They're nice and clean now.

I think it's at this point that you've surpassed "general fixin' up."

Between all the chassis coatings and the diesel swap, your truck will be indestructible!

6+ years ago when I made that title I didn't envision what kind of journey I was embarking on - and didn't even think I'd be doing a "restoration" of this sort!

Had to break into the secret stash tonight.
Excellent stuff!

Got the backing plates and rear axles installed, and put some rubber under it.

Put the knuckles on, used a Sumo knuckle kit from @torfab , Koyo bearings, nice Japanese seals and two things that don't come in many kits - a full assortment of shims and also the axle circlips, very nice!

Awesome! You are a steering wheel and Home Depot bucket (as a seat) away from driving that thing around the neighborhood!
Well, look what I spy on the shelf! It's even one of those padded swivel top dove hunting buckets, and theres even a steering wheel hanging right next to it! I admire your optimism sir, I think I'll go take a drive now ;).

awesome progress Klaus! Looks like that thing will be ready for solid axle summit ;) I like the picture with your boy in the back, I bet he'll come across it 20 years from now when he's working on this truck and share it on mud again.

Threw fenders on to start mocking up engine accessories. Gotta do some more thinking on this one. Need to fab up oil feed and return lines for the vacuum pump, and figure out what to do about battery placement as that space shrinks with the much larger tha original alternator. I don't want to push the vacuum pump right up agianst the exhaust manifold, so it has to hang out some.

Can you move the battery back? Would it be feasible to make a little heat sheild for the pump?

Gotta run the exhaust down somewhere in the area behind the battery tray too. I would like to keep the battery in the original location if possible. I really don't have much width to work with though.

Maybe there is a different battery type you can run vs the stock size? A little skinnier and taller.

Total bummer today. We had a sunny day, in the 50's, so I painted the floor and back of firewall (I had previously painted the areas easily accessible when the tub was upside down.)
Something went bad. The primer looks like garbage and is curing very slow, I hope it actually cures.. same exact stuff that went down beautifully when I did the bottom. There was some sticky stuff on the bottom of the hardener container, I didn't think too much of it at the time because it was on a shelf with all kinds of paint/containers and I just figured something leaked out. I wonder if some component of the hardener leaked out? At any rate it will all have to come off at a later date, I have to get this thing put back together now.

And just to have something to look forward to and not be completely negative, how about some inspiration for next year - hopefully it's this pile in the photo instead by then! (Picture courtesy of Doug)
