I'm installing OME SB30 bushings, leaf springs and shackles on my 1977 FJ40.

The shackle instructions state to "install OME polyurethane bushes (greased) in hanger and spring eyes".

The bushing instructions state to "grease all bush surfaces which are designed to pivot(ie internal bore and flange faces)" and "Do NOT grease pressure fit surfaces or outsiode of shackle bushes".

Please see attached picture. If I follow the bushing instructions I would:
grease surface (A) the flange face and the internal bore
I would NOT grease surface (B) outside of bushing.

I did notice the spring eyes did come from the factory with some grease in them.

I am getting conflicting information. What should I grease????

Grease where it will touch metal and need to flex. No need to grease the face or "A" in your diagram. Grease B and the inside of the bushing where the pin would go.
 
Hi all,

Grease the inside of the poly spring bushings where the spring pin resides. The grease allows the pin to move freely, and helps keep it from getting stuck to the bushing.

Don't grease the exterior of the spring bushings; they are not designed to rotate in the spring eye.

I don't think the instructions are telling you to grease the hanger and spring eyes. They are saying to grease (on the correct surfaces) the bushings prior to installation. This is so in the next step when you insert the partially assembled shackle the bushing face is greased. Though I agree it is not started very clearly.
 
I don't necessarily agree with Alan, I'd grease every surface that touches metal, I.D.'s and O.D.'s.
ISSUES:
(a) If the polyurethane bushings do not have inhibitors (cheaper bushings) to tolerate lubricants (i.e. Rancho bushings), the grease will absorb into the bushing, turning it into mush.
(b) If you use 95% of the lubricants on the market, they will ooze out of the bushings very quickly, they are not sticky enough and have no staying power. I like the old wagon wheel grease, almost bees wax, thick, paste like, sticky, and stays in place forever. When the spring eye/frame socket are fully packed with this stuff, nothing has the opportunity to enter. Problem is you'd have to have the grazing rights to some old barns to find the stuff, not available

In the past spring builds on the old Sami I used Syl-Glide from Napa in the tube form - it doesn't soften the bushings (poly or rubber) and stays in place very nicely . Seems to also resist salt spray very well despite the insane flex I built into those last spring packs ...the rest of the truck did not fare so well...

Yes I found that after the install. Funny how OME can't setup a page with their own instructions.

To be fair, there are a handful of things we know that manufactures often dont... and it's easy to explain. We've been using, selling, installing and servicing Land Cruiser parts for nearly 25 years... We've sold OME for nearly 20 years and I've driven across 5 continents with OME equipped rigs. We got the Intel down pat. We are absolutely happy to pass that along to our customers both I the build stage of their suspension kit as well as years down the road if/when a spare part or replacement is needed.
