Ah, I see. I too didn’t quite get it.🎯

Or, to put it in graphics...

The diagram should show a second shear plane where the top plate meets the middle plate, but this gets the point across. The bolt is weaker at the threads, so you want the shoulder at each of the shear planes. The left one has the shoulder at the upper shear plane, but not the lower plane. The right one has the shoulder at both shear planes and is therefore stronger.

A full thread bolt is used only for clamping the pieces together, where you don't have shear forces (technically, you'll almost always have some shear forces, but that is picayune).

Also, as GLTHFJ60 is saying, the threads will also allow movement. So if the bolt doesn't just shear, it will slowly wallow out the holes and cause damage that way.

I love a good tech derail. Nice to know. I’ll beta test these as is and will see how long it takes to kill them. The chance of me digging thise back out after all that is between zero and none

Downside is that it won't just destroy the bolt, but the bracket as well.

It's one of those things where you may end up never incurring any consequences for leaving it as is... and a failure isn't likely to be catastrophic. But it is worth knowing the design intent of bolts like this.

Sweet setup... I'd love to get softer springs in my Troopy and airbags for when I load out. The u-bolt flip kits are top notch kit, and to have the airbags mated directly is just @lcwizard one-upping himself.

The Dobinsons I put on the red 45 sat the same as the OME I had to remove 3 leafs from. Just saying.

I’ve been waiting a long time for these 16x7.5 Fifteen52 wheels to come in. They recently changed their grey to a more “cruiser” grey color but they don’t offer them (yet) in the 16” with 4.25” BS so I ordered black and had them powder coated to the color that i think is the proper grey for the Steelies (splits) that would have been around in 1984

As I mentioned with the Smooth Vintique wheels a page before, the wheels May would fit without spacers but there is no way with the Boss Airbags so the 1” spacers are here to stay. I like the stance.

Stretched the legs for the first time today since all of the modifications I’ve done the last few months.

I dialed in the Dobinsons MRR real nicely for curvy rough 2 lane pavement. Got to see how far I can drive on 40+ gallons of gas and dropped/picked up parts from Ozark Overland @Ozark cruiser

Great day now I’m off to hang a hammock somewhere in Arkansas

Those wheels with those tires!

Great trip. Zero issues. Cruised about 65-70 and 2500 rpm most of the 800 Miles and got 12.5 mpg on each fillup.

I have a few more mods in the queue ….stay tuned.

A few weeks back when I installed the @lcwizard Ubolt flip kit I realized one of the front plates had fallen out of the box. He quickly sent me out another plate but then his desert caught on fire and the USPS got delayed. They showed up Friday so I installed the front flip kit along with a set of 4* caster shims from @orangefj45. I’ve got 5* positive caster now and it almost steers itself. Zero wander. Zero kick going over huge bumps

While I was in there I went ahead and yanked the small spring out of the bottoms of the pack to see if I could get the front down just a hair more.

Turns out that was the magic to get my steering perfect and my stance just like i like it with no air in the rear bags. I took a couple clicks of rebound out while it was on the rack and took it for a drive. Man. Perfection these MRRs and Dobinsons springs are perfect now.

Yes. His kit has all that.
He’s headed home now. Load him up with work ……

here's an unfortunate victim of the fire. A customer's 40 we finished a few years ago

With that mileage, and the long range tank, what's your range on average? I can do math, but I was curious about real world experience lol.
