Ok so I reread your posting here and have decided that AFI is down for the win. Order is going in this weekend,
1. Should I get the DUI or stay with my Toyota dizzy?

Couple of reasons
1. Customer service of AFI (I mean come on the president of the company responded to an email)
2. Overall reliability of the system AND parts are off the shelf.
3. Learn = nope just go and drive, what I want.
4. I like the computer separate, My #1 concern with the learning all in one systems is heat and reliability over time. A junk yard TBI unit still works even after baking and leaving out in the rain. I am just not convinced on the others. This is a DD for me and backcounty vehicle, a long way from home in many cases......AAA does not go off road.

One other question.....The O2 sensor issue fixed it self?

I think it’s a good choice. I’m pretty convinced now that my O2 problem was really a fuel pump problem.

Once I replaced the pump I was all good.

I really like it. I’m goin to try a Holley on my FJ55 and I’ll have first hand for both then.

Agree for reliability the TBI stuff is hard to beat.

Plus my mileage now with the higher timing is really legit.

Nice,
Did you get the DUI from AFI and if so what is the difference from any other Toyota usable DUI.

I looked closely at the Holley and FiTech units. Simply due to the lack of known readability factor (not time tested yet) for something that I need reliable, I have to put these off. AFI is a simple setup and more what I am looking for.

GM TBI is not idea for any Fuel Injection system, but that said they also out lasted many of the engines and vehicles they were put on.

If this was a weekend cruiser, or something I towed somewhere, I would not care much..However I will be driving it to the destinations.

I.E. this summer is a 2-3 week trip following the Continental Divide through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. 90% is off any major roads and much without cell service.

I would however put one of them on my next project (it will be a weekend cruiser)

I am a fan of the DUI. I think it’s better suited for the AFI. You have to get the DUI from them though. They have a special build for them to mate to the AFI. Get on it. That takes the longest to get.

I ordered a DUI for my Holley too

Nolan,

I am running the modified FJ62 dist. provided by AFI (at an extra cost) with my AFI TBI setup. Very responsive and no issues.

If timing advance is controlled by the EFI computer and it's a modern distributor (high voltage), what advantage do you get from DUI in particular over the modified FJ62 distributor? Not trying to start a fight - purely a scientific question here.

I don’t think there is an advantage other than the fact that it simplifies this a bit taking an old coil and igniter out of the system. In my case that was the reason
A lot of people are against HEI. I think these are the people who have run cheap/ crappy ones.
I used one in my old muscle car and the heat that came out of the engine bay with long tube headers would cook most things.
The ignition never failed me.
I like the idea of getting rid of the igniter. Reduce possible failure components now that these vehicles are getting older.

If you want to keep it as Toyota as possible, absolutely go for the modified FJ62 dizzy. As the TBI system is GM anyways.....why not for the dizzy.

The advantage of the DUI is that it is controlled by the computer and works in conjunction with the O2 Sensor, Map sensor, etc to advance or retard timing in near real time to changing conditions.

You can order the DUI directly from Performance Distributors, just tell them you want a computer controlled distributor.

The negative view people have on the HEI distributors is from the cheap made in China versions which are all over. As @wngrog said the one used with AFI is built in Memphis by Performance Distributors. I dealt directly with them having one converted to computer controlled and they are top notch and stand behind their products.

Excellent news.

I finally got out on a good long overland with Ole Blue since we bumped the timing from 0 to 11 degrees.

Mileage jumped from 11-12 to 14.5 average over 450 miles.

So happy. Last piece of the puzzle to fall to make the AFI the best mod to date.

Also tested the Auburn LSD from @RustyNailJustin and it was superb. Excellent upgrade. Man. Now I want 2 more for my 55 and 40....
That's a pretty good improvement in mileage.

Alright, gathering the other parts for the AFI install (ordered the kit with the DUI today from AFI).
Bosch o2 = Ordered (if nothing else it is a spare)
Walbro? I will assume the GSL395 as per their site is for the TBI and 130lph approx.

@wngrog did you use a different pump?

Walbro good. Fuel pump block off plate.

I put clear 60 series Toyota fuel filters before pump and after. Latter is in stock location. I like to see what’s what with the fuel.

Get the live wires from DUI as well. They are great with the Dissy.

Absolutely on the live wires and thank you sir!

Excited about my longest trip to date in the Ole Blue 60. 2500-2800 miles round trip coming up this weekend through next Wednesday.

Headed to Big Bend again. I was advising a small group from Mississippi on a trip there and the dates lined up for me to horn in on their trip.

This will be, by far, the longest trip I’ve ever made in a relic. I’m sure hoping I have all the bugs worked out.

Going through my pre-flight inspection and damn......looks like a mouse or rat has decided to make home in my hood pad.

It’s gone and I’ve moved the truck from where it has been parked recently.

All my wires are looking OK so hopefully it did not have a secret dining spot I don’t see.

I've seen quite a few hood pads like that.
Fortunately, the tall & well-sealed 60 body seems to keep them from getting inside & pissing in the heater box.👍

Just got the Toyota Trails for Jan/Feb. Another awesome picture from you on the cover.
Can you give some details? other than "caption needed":grinpimp:
Thanks and keep taking pics!

Funny. Yeah I think Stan got in a hurry and forgot to ask.

I live in Mississippi and that shot is on my farm during a rare snowstorm.

There’s the caption ..... and a better shot IMO
