Dan

they look like this... :D

well that's how they look in my 80, but they look smaller and lighter on the shelf. don't be deceived!! it is one big batch! took a little finagling (read trimming) of the battery tray in my rig.

It looks like the stock battery hold-down bracket is no longer an option?

i think you could fab a longer crossbar if you wanted, maybe. i don't know since i didn't have any stock tie down for the little battery when i bought the rig and had to fab one that didn't work on the new one.. but those two nylon straps go through slots i cut in the box and and are a loop holding the batt into the box. very sturdy. i like it.

I should show you what I did before last years Oct Moab trip. Really cheap, but the battery has not budged one bit. I might even have some of metal left over. Remind me to take a pic this weekend.

Engine Color

I felt that my yellow OME shocks and yellow rear caliper mounts were lonely. So I decided to paint the new to me 2F engine yellow with silver trim. I knew it was going to be ugly before doing it, but why not, it can't be worse than the rust/blue. I did not paint the aluminum valve cover, I like the way it is.

The color looks a lot worse in person.

Guess you haven't seen my yellow candy-striped driveshafts, diff cover, bellhouse etc. I did the same thing trying match up some OME suspension stuff many moons ago. I found a brand of enamel (no clue which anymore) that had a color called "school bus yellow" that was an almost dead-on match. Sorry Andy, your's looks a little more like Shrek with that green tinge :flipoff2: My kids would probably love it, though.

You are seeing the little bit of blue from the previous color show through. It really needs another few coats of paint. It is so pitiful looking I am beginning to love to hate it. Does not really matter anyhow, after a few months of driving it will be dirty anyway, and even have a more shrek color!

Engine Swap Update

Do not have much time, but wanted to share some progress photos of the F to 2F engine swap. And a special Thanks to Dan S. for all his help:clap:.

Old F engine, 3 spd tranny, and transfer being removed; thanks Dan and Paul.

And F engine out

Dan proving that the rear main bearing can be removed with bread.

Semi-clean transfer case with nose cone and transfer case savers [thanks Georg at Valley Hybrids).

And this is how the transfer looked when I removed it from Ol'Jenny.

2F, 4 spd tranny, transfer attached:

Accidental modification. Worked out for the better. Modified the the bracket that prevents going into 2 Low. Now I have 2 Low without the need for a twin stick! Hope this does not cause issues.

2F, 4 spd tranny, and transfer going in.

And a quick test to see if everything worked. I used my F carb, but kept all other accessories from the 2F. The exhaust is not hooked up. Neither is the coolant, hence the 3 second run test:

And the first body modification. :frown: Fuel door:

More pics to come later. New seats, dashbox, aux tank, new stock tank, blah blah blah.

Oh ya, I kept the 2F clutch on the passenger side. Had a new line built. And best of all, for some reason my 9/72 FJ40 already had the newer crossmember design so I did not have clearance issues with the longer tranny.

OOOOOOO, love it when projects come together. Sure sounds like a tractor. Oh, wait ... it is. Why not get a 2F carb?

Why not get a 2F carb?
I have the 2F carb. Main reason I stayed with the F carb is that I have a cable throttle; the 2F carb has linkage. To go with the 2F carb, I would have to do one of the following:

  1. modify the 2F carb to accept a throttle cable.
  2. fabricate some sort of bracket to mate the linkage and throttle cable,
  3. try to figure out how to mount the F carb throttle cable assembly (where it mounts to the carb) to the 2F carb, or
  4. Change out the gas pedal assembly. Not a straight swap.
Lastly, to much emission stuff on it. I went for simplicity.

You are making this way too difficult. All you need to do is move the bell crank from your carb to the 2F carb. BTDT.

Andrew - pretty cool! Thanks for the update.

Also, Jon's right - it does sound like a tractor, and yes, it is a tractor!

Andrew

Truck is looking great! I can't wait to hear how those new seats work out for you. I am still up for your stock lap belts if you decide to swap them out. You have a great looking truck and by the looks of it, you built it right!

Just because I need to prove that I can do something more/better than just cut a hole in the side of a pristine bodied cruiser....

The picture of it with primer makes it look crappy. Get some green paint for it pronto! Then my bodywork will look OK. :grinpimp:

I'll be home tomorrow, let's hope we've got big updates by the end of the weekend.... At the least I'll hope we find your Main/Aux placard. :flipoff2:
