I guess I will need to add a new alternator and battery to my engine swap list! Got to love project creep!!

Score! That is awesome indeed.

You know that the '79 2F has the bigger 50 amp alternator, right? I don't know how big of an alternator you are thinking, but... EDIT--I'm not sure if the alternator itself is bigger, but the '79 has the 50 amp ammeter, FWIW.

50 amps is still pretty weeny for driving a winch, even with good revs. I'd spend the money/time on a second battery, or if you have the accessory option (i.e. smog pump removal) a second alternator is a handy add-on (BTDT).

Second battery is not an option at this time due to cost. I am also purchasing an aux tank from NWMP and fuel switching valve, new battery (Die Hard Platinum), Yaesu FT8800R, CB radio, Roundeyes and wiring harness, new clutch, secondary fuse block, blah blah blah....hmm, maybe a dual battery setup is needed. :hhmm:

I am writing a parts list and time schedule. I will post this list to the group for feedback and comments before taking the plunge.

Hmm i think i can already hear the footsteps of everyone running up behind you to push you off that cliff ;)

The smog pump is removed on the 2F, Andy's truck doesn't need smog checks, and the only thing there now is an idler pulley. Sounds like a second alternator might be an option. I'd think a simple 1 wire 100 amp alternator might fit the bill nicely in there. I see they aren't real expensive at all (looks like $85 for a non-bling model).

Scary. The gears are turning.... But a real good battery might be a simpler option. Did you find a group 31 Andy?

The Diehard Platinum does not come in a group 31. I will have to:

  1. get something similar in size to fit my current battery tray
  2. or fab/purchase a new battery tray for the biggest battery I can fit the space.

I will have to read up on the dual alternator concept!!

Ok...focus focus focus....I need to finish writing the final for the course I am teaching then my mind will be free to think about the more important things in life.... Such a shame I am going on vacation with an engine swap on my mind.

EDIT-->>> Just finished writing the final

That is EXACTLY the set up I on my 2F before I jumped off the V8 cliff. Extremely easy mod that only requires removal of one bolt from the smog pump bracket and a spacer for the lower alt mounting "ear". Worked great.

Oh noes! They didn't discontinue the group 31M Diehard Platinum I hope. I was planning on buying one for my 45. Of course now that I know how awesome it is I might just have to pony up for the same expensive version of the battery ala Odyssey.

Dan, the last I looked they didn't list the monster on the Sears.com website.

Crud.

I guess I missed my chance to buy the best battery ever for the 45. At a discounted price, that is.

Why don't you buy two smaller batteries, cut them in half, then glue gun them together.

Additional thoughts:

  1. Darn CDAN is at Cruise Moab. Cannot order parts!!
  2. Thinking about these: Scat/Procar 80-1000-51R - Scat Rally Series 1000 Seats - Overview - SummitRacing.com
  3. I need to figure out which sending unit is best for a NWMP aux. tank, any suggestions? I can send it to NWMP and they will install it!!

After I couldn't take any more time on the bench seat in the ol' 40 I installed some cheap one-piece racing seats and fabbed my own brackets. Also installed a set of 4-point harnesses bolted to the floor and run through the slots in the seat backs. Sorta hard to get in/out of but once your butt was in place you didn't move regardless how much bouncing around you did, onroad or off.

Andy, the seats you linked to don't appear to have provision for use of a harness, something I'd recommend based on my experience. .02

True they just give you a funny look some times. It is worth a shot for sure.

That is true. Unlike Dan, they are not likely to think outside the box. They can look up stuff in the catalog, but when it comes down to solving problems, Dan is the man. Dan once made a comment to me about "cobbling" Da'40 together (while helping me find a fuel hose, ultimately from a FZJ80). He was right of course, but he also was helpful making it happen.

I also saw a mention of new seats. So are you finally moving away from bone stock?

Hey Paul. I had a difficult time deciding to keep bone stock or slightly modified. But once I went with OME 2.5" and disk brakes...well there went bone stock. Now, if I can make the FJ40 somewhat comfortable to drive down to the oil and gas fields, I can charge the company for fuel and field vehicle use. Modifications, here I come.

Ya know, I don't consider disk brakes, or a simple 2.5" lift to be a significant modification. Spring over lift ... yes. But improving the braking system to make the truck safer is not a big deal, especially if you use mini-truck/FJ60 bits to make the modification to the front.

Even new seats is not a big deal. There should be no guilt in wanting to actually be comfortable driving the truck.

Sounds like a plan. Plus the seats make the car safer because they have proctection for the head and neck. And the aux gas tank makes a ton of sense now that you will be driving it for the oil companies. It will be interesting to see what else gets put into the vehicle next. Right now I am thinking both yours and my forty will keep classic lines of style, but with some non oem goods attached here or there.

I am intersted in seeing how you do your aux gas tank because at some point I would like to do that to mine as well. Good luck and can't wait to see the next step of your build.

I was hoping you would beat me to it. Then I could copy your setup!!

Take a look at bsevans setup (https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/96428-rotw-my-yoda-2.html#post1214313). I am going to copy his setup.

I am going to use the NWMP tank and the selector valve ( as suggested by bsevans), including additional fuel filters as suggested. I am keeping the mechanical fuel pump.

I am researching the fuel sending unit unit now. I think that the JC Whitney Universal sending unit will work (http://www.jcwhitney.com/universal-...2-volt-negative-ground-systems/p2008885.jcwx#). Still researching though. The fuel gauge is 113ohms full and 17 ohms empty. Yours should be the same.

I have looked at bsevans set up and his entire rig is amazing. There are some things that I might do differently, but his rig is pretty much what I want mine. He even has the right color.
