Rogue site for one? My specialty :ninja:
Coming in 40 or 26?

Let me get to a cpu and try and see whats closest to your route.

Pisgah is a little bit off your path but you Could camp right at the trailhead of Caney Fork and bomb down 8 miles a pristine single track in the morning. It is on Forest Road 475B above the fish hatchery if you have any trail guides. 40>S 26 >W 280(airport rd)>R on 276(at walmart)>L 475>R 475B at john rock and hatchery. Trailhead 3.5mile up on left. Poorly marked if it even is.

Right on 40 theres a spot at cold spring creek rd exit just inside the NC line. Go South on 288 gravel access rd. Cross river and follow gravel look for uphill left in the middle of a right bending switch back on gravel. That left dead ends at a nice riverside campsite but Rooty if pitching a tent

If coming down 26 you could shoot into Hot Springs there is a helicopter landing pad campsite on the east of town and a bear sanctuary campsite on the west of town. Bear sanctuary actually has a bike trail as well with camping at the trailhead.

Eh s***, it's not even open yet. You might want to check into getting off 40 around the TN/NC border, Cold Creek or Harmon Den - plenty of primitive camping in that area. Maybe someone else will chime in with more specifics.

I've ridden out of the fish hatchery on previous visits to the area. I had good maps of the area but apparently lost them in the divorce. I think I can prob find the fish hatchery again. I also have topo software on a mounted tablet I can use. Looks like I'm coming in on 40.

Easy to find. Youll just pass potential things of intereston way in and may make drive longer than necessary for tonight.

Harmons den is an easy hour closer for you and lets you wake up and make a plan if you havent and see asheville fresh and on the way into town.

Or if your game to push on through and wake up at pisgah trails just lemme know.

I can prob push through easy enough. I typically work night shift anyway.

I edited my post above with some names.

a) cold springs ck rd exit just into NC from TN on 40

b) pisgah.... lots of spots but to put you close to biking look here is one

From the Asheville airport, take Highway 280 west to the U.S. Highway 64/280/276 intersection at Pisgah National Forest. Turn north onto U.S. Highway 276. Go 4.5 miles to Forest Road 475A and turn left. Travel on 475A for 1.5 miles and turn right onto 475 B (headwaters road) at the fish hatchery on left. 3.7 miles up gravel road Cove Creek Loop is on your left. There is camping for 1 group/2truck max at the trailhead. There may be some other spots scattered further up.

Subsequently if that spot is taken the downhill side of the loop is doable. Not as remote and more traffic but easy late night stick. Back down to fish hatchery and turn right and go 1.5miles to the campground on the right. Cove creek group camping; road will be gated. But i have camped across the street from the gated road and there is interspersed fishing camping up and down the road thats not fancy but works in a pinch.

otherwise there are very few spots but very few people on the loop of FSR that surrounds Looking glass falls. 475B comes back into 276 and then shortly to the north heads off to the right as avery ck rd /fsr 477 and loops south back to 276 back by brevard entrance. If you dont mind roadside spot there are a few but not many but this has great access to south side of Mills River Mtb trails.

Further fall backs would be

Mills River campground. Roll in late. Pay in am.
edit... closed till 31st

Campground off 191 i stayed at years ago was great and private and right in the thick of trails but i cant tell which it was? back a good long gravel road from 191. bent creek campground?? ... lake powhatan lake and rec perhaps but that looks too fancy.

Awesome info, thanks so much!!
I'm sure I'll find something.

Now who's game to play hooky from work and ride with me tomorrow?

Also possibly interested in wheeling in afternoon or evening and then meet up with some locals for a bit and/or drink.

Could also do all this again or instead on Wed. Im traveling solo and totally flexible.

That option A) is right by hurricane creek if you change your mind or get tired.

You could run hurricane creek and back down to 40 by lunch and into asheville for short ride before dinner at a brewery and use those spots the following night.

Enjoy.

No worries. I got in the area super super late so it would have been rude to show up at anyone's house at that hour.

After missing the exit once I doubled back and ended up camping off cold springs creek rd. Took a bit to find a spot due to a down tree but it all worked out.

If the offer is still open to crash there tonight I'd gladly accept. We could wheel or ride somewhere in the morning perhaps. I'd still be game to meet up with some folks for a bite/drink tonight as well.

Warrior creek seems fun so far.

@Greenbean @sleepycruiser @BillRiley @jdayment ???

Let me know if you're coming through Charlotte at all. Food or drink can work. Can meet you at Whitewater Center after riding if you go there. Also, our Charlotte area monthly meeting is this Sunday just a couple miles from Uptown CLT. Would love to have you if you're still floating around.

My couch is open as long as you are not afraid of dogs let me know.

Get the Avenza App Avenza Maps Mobile App and buy Pisgah Map Company maps for Bent Creek, South Pisgah Ranger District, and Grandfater Ranger District. That will cover you most of MTB trails from Black Mountain, NC to Brevard. It will also show you where you can "wheel" on the gravel roads, though some may be closed to vehicles until freeze/thaw is done.

Nice, I do t even know where Warrior Creek is. Trail looks nice. Where is that?

I won't be able to meet for drinks tonight, unfortunately. Wife is sick and so I am on Daddy Duty. How long will you be in Asheville?

I used to own several of those maps, but ended up in the ex-wife's stuff it seems. I've been to the area several times in the past with friends to mountain bike but never to wheels. Didn't realize those maps would be good for wheeling too. Looks like need to buy them again.

Sounds good. I love dogs actually. Have two rescued ones of my own and I actually volunteer at my local dog shelter.
