Hey guys (and some gals).....

My name is Chris and I'm planning a trip from Ohio to NC in my 80 series the week of March 20th.

I'm looking to meet up with some other cruiser heads on my trip and it was suggested I post here. Due to a recent divorce I'm doing this trip completely solo, which I'm totally fine with.

I have no real firm plans for when and where I go, but would like to get a few things in.

I would ideally like to mountain bike a couple of days in the Asheville area early in the week, then maybe a day or two of wheeling in likely the Uwharrie area, and then maybe a costal/beach day that may or not include some beach wheeling. I've visited the Wilmington area and was pretty fond of that but would even be game for an outerbanks day trip.

The ONSC club certainly seems pretty active and full of what appear to be some great peeps. I'm reaching out to you folks for suggestions and/or offers you have. I know I've chatted on the 80 tech forum with a couple folks about my interest in NC in general but I can't recall who exactly I chatted with. It would take me forever to go back through all the pages to figure it out.

That being said, any offers of places to stay are always appreciated but my trip certainly doesn't hinge on that. If so though, I'm super laid back, easy to get along with, pretty self reliant, and very much a non-smoker. I have a RTT but prob wont be putting it on for this trip but will be traveling with the abilty to sleep in the cruiser as well as a very comfy folding cot. I'm also not opposed to the occasional hotel.

I will for certain bringing my mountain bike as that's my main non-winter sport, and have actually been to the Ashville area to mountain bike on several occasions already. Although from Ohio I can handle pretty much all the terrain the mountain bike trails in NC can dish out. Hopefully I'll get a taker or two for some mountain biking.

I also have a couple of sea kayaks and I could be talked into bringing one along if someone is into kayaking as another activity to do while in NC.

Well, I hope this post and subsequent forum finds everyone well. I know that you guys are having a gathering this coming weekend that might eat into your allotted cruiser and play time and also the fact that it's during the work week, so hopefully I'll get some takers.

I will be leaving Columbus, OH the morning of the 25th and need to head back to Ohio the morning of the 26th

Hey Chris, sounds like you have a good trip planned. I grew up in WV and spent a lot of time in Ohio, around Columbus and Delaware Ohio. I might be wrong but I don't think they open the trails in Uwharrie until April.

Chris, The URE trails open March 31st about 8ish in the morning. The last work day before the trails open is the 25th. 9am-2:30pm. there might be some time to do a quick trail if work gets completed early.

Hey Chris, if you need a place to crash for an evening in the Raleigh area, you're welcome in my home! Native of Canton, OU grad, and former Cleveland resident here. :)

On the MTB front check out Dupont State Forest, Pisgah(outside of Brevard), and Warrior Creek. Brevard is a nice stop for a MTB biker beer drinker. If you get to Charlotte at all hit me up. The US White Water Center is a great place to bike and hang out.

Hey Chris!! I've got a place in Durham you can stay at as well.

While in Asheville give me a shout. Maybe we can round up a few and do Hurricane Creek depending on Your timeline. Or at least grab a beer.

As I said, my timeline is pretty flexible. I'm assuming Hurricane Creek if for the Cruiser and not the mountain bike? I'm down with that if so. Maybe Tuesday or Wed?

Bummer, guess I could have timed my trip better. I'm not against showing up for the work day in putting in some labor, especially if it helps to increase the chances of getting done early and running a trail aftwerwards.

I am in Asheville as well and so is @Greenbean we can all together for bite or something

Awesome, I've visited several times in the past and love the area. Would love to get together, maybe @sleepycruiser can join?

So awesome, thanks for the offer. Will let you know as the trip starts to materialize. OSU grad here.

Yes those are all great places and I've ridden most of them in the Ashville area except for Warrior Creek. I've heard of the white water center, but didn't know there was biking there. I'm very curious about it now. Do you mountain bike as well?

Awesome, thanks! I sure wouldn't mind checking out the cruiser listed in your signature.

I do, I am built for the descents and not the climbs if you know what I mean, but I enjoy it. USWWC has about 30 total miles of single track; its just a great place to hang out for a few hours too.

Sounds like a plan. @sleepycruiser is an alright guy I guess he can come...

I have already been banished? Haha. Would love to join.

Well it's been a super busy week at work and around the house. I wanted to get a few things done to the cruiser but parts I thought were shipping last Friday didn't ship until Wednesday and even though they were sent over night it didn't really help my timeline out. Guess I'll just travel with tools and they parts, just in case. I'm looking to roll out of Columbus Monday morning some time and arrive in the Asheville area Monday afternoon/evening. Like I said in some earlier posts I'm quite flexible with my activities and timeline. I'd like to spend a day or two in the Ashville area and get some biking in. If there is some mild to moderate wheeling in the area I'd love to hear about that as well. I know a few times I've ridden the mountain bike in the Black Mountain area and there were some back roads and rugged double track cris-crossing the whole area. @jdayment do you know if that area allows access? I'm also up for anybody's suggestions for back places to drive or wheel since it looks like Uhwarrie is still closed next week. I'll be running topo US software in the 80, so I should be able to find nearly any back forest road and what not. Also @sleepycruiser I did a google map search for hurricane creek and I came up with a trail head just off of I-40. I assume that's what you're talking about? If so, that's one sneaky place for a trail head. A quick blink and you'd miss it.

The upcoming weather looks decent but variable with some chances for rain, so that could dictate some of my activities. @pkniland, I'd be game to meet up for some mountain biking in the Charlotte area as well if you're free during the week. Also, while I'm built to go uphill as well as downhill I'm cool going any speed up or down as riding with someone is more fun than worrying about speed. I'm not coming to race...just ride and have a good time. Would be cool having a local with some knowledge along.

As I mentioned earlier I'd be down to help the group out with the trail day since I'll be wandering around the state, @fourtrax can you link me to some info about that?

Last but not least, I'd really be up for any good bluegrass bands while in the state, so I'd really love some suggestions and/or some joiners.

Chris info below from the USFS for the work day Sat 3/25. There is a small store Eldorado Outpost (Google Maps ) a little over a mile from Hunt Camp where we will meet that has gas, air, food and supplies (good people) if you need anything. we try to arrive at Hun camp by 9;00 but generally seem to be a few minutes late for one reason or another. but, we will be there (about a 2 hour drive for us).

Hi Everyone – I hope you’re all doing well and getting ready for opening day on March 31st. Our next work day has been switched to March 25th and we’ll meet at 9 am at the Uwharrie Hunt Camp. The projects we’ll be doing is installing & fixing split rail fencing & fixing sections of guardrail on Dickey Bell Trail, Slab Pile Trail, Wolf Den Trail and Falls Dam Trail. We’ll also have carsonite (brown fiberglass) signs to install along the trails and behind the fences for “No motorized vehicles”…

Please bring claw foot hammers and pliers and crow bars to pull old nails out of the old sections of split rail fencing we can reuse, bring work gloves, augers, post hole diggers, shovels, rock bars, & sledge hammers. I’ll have the signs & sign installation tools. I’ll also have some crews go to the stream crossings where we took the log corduroy crossings out and ask you to take the cables out of the logs. I’ll have the cable cutter and small sledge with me and we’ll have one crew go around and do that on several trails.

Thanks a lot everyone. I appreciate all of your help. Bye - Terry

Unless theres a sign its open here youll see alot of posted areas biking is a huge attraction for Black Mountain so if its public land youre good to go

I meant open to vehicles.

Can anyone recommend a rogue but mostly legal or low risk of getting harassed camp site in the Asheville area for tonight? Life happened and I got a late start out of Columbus so I'll be getting to the area very late. Directions, address, and GPS coordinates all work for me.
