Just wanted to chime in and recommend Deka for standard FLA batteries. I’m running one of their 100ah group 31 FLA right now.
My last Deka just got replaced at seven years after multiple deep cycles and a long history of abuse in the 80:clap:

My OEM battery died after just 2.5 years. I would not get another one of those.

Maybe the older OEM batteries lasted longer, but the current one I had did not even go 3 years.

When you say OEM do you mean the original that came in the truck or one you bought from a dealer?

This thread is the first I had heard that dealers sell something other than what comes in the truck, though it doesn't surprise me given their wiper blade scam.

I use the Odyssey . 4 Wheel parts delivers and then I took my old battery to Walmart to recycle for free

Cole, is the battery you're running the DP31DT? Staring at their product sheet and trying to decipher which model you have, thanks!

It’s something like the 1131PMF going off of memory. I can look when I get the truck back. It’s possible that it lives in their farm equipment collection.

Methinks you have remembered correctly, I was looking at a marine dual purpose starting/deep cycle and the # you mentioned is labelled heavy duty commercial with more CCAs. Appreciate it!

There are a couple threads on this question already. The 'smart' alternator is not suitable for agm. I ran an agm and tested it with a Ctek 7002 and after each week, it had to be charged up to get past 80%. I didn't want to do the diode trick because the last thing I want is a fried alternator. After 2 months, I went to the Lexus factory LA battery for $90 with a 84 month warranty I think. Holds a charge and I use the agm in a slee second tray.

Oooh. Just looked it up and THAT is a sexy battery because it is perfect for the application. Pretty reasonable price too and I can order it to be picked up at Lowes.

Any chance you have pics or a link of the install?

Lots of weird fears out there about the diode. I’ve been using the diode trick for two + years on my original alternator (12 years old now) with my two AGMs...and my alternator is fine. All the diode does is trick the alternator into thinking the battery is slightly more depleted than it is...so that it treats it like a battery that needs more charge—which is perfectly within its capabilities to do. Nothing is forcing the alternator to do something beyond its normal capabilities. It just keeps it in that other mode longer. Not a big deal at all.

Also, worth mentioning, I went this route as I have a dometic fridge in the trunk drawing off of this battery. 100 ah, fridge probably drains it to 50% after two days of no driving. Carrying a jump pack as a backup. Not perfect, but havent run into problems yet. Just an excuse to explore the areas that you camp in once pitching the tent.
Hey man. What jump pack are you using for that group 31 Odyssey? I am running this exact configuration and have not seen a jump pack that works with it. TIA

What is the problem with using the jump packs you’ve found?

My search did not indicate a jump pack that could work with the AGM group 31 Odyssey. That is why I am asking since I could not find one (at least with my limited search skills).

I don't think it matters. The jump pack is just providing temporary replacement power to start the engine. The vehicle being started has no knowledge of what is providing that power. I don't see how/why any 12v jump pack would need to be compatible with a particular battery chemistry.

Chargers are a whole different story, which has been covered extensively here and elsewhere. You need an AGM compatible charger for your AGM batteries.

Duracell Ultra Gold BCI Group 27F - about $125 from Batteries Plus w/ 48mo replacement warranty.
Great battery. But 36mo replacement IIRC.

Yeah, that probably changed since I posted this. And probably has doubled in price as well. :(

I didn't realize your comment was that old. Geez, I guess I'm getting up there too....

I was thinking about this.

The dead battery will act as a current draw, reducing the amount that can be sent to the starter.. so the best procedure may be to unhook the negative terminal, jump the vehicle with the pack, then when it’s running hook the battery back up.

Anyone see issues with this? Alternator putting too much current into the system with the battery disconnected?

It might be better theoretically (which I know nothing about), but practically speaking, I've jumped a bunch of other peoples vehicles with my noco jump pack and then removed it and all was fine. The batteries were just not strong enough to turn the vehicle over.

I agree.. it’s just that I also believe whoever posted in the jump pack thread that a GB40 didn’t work for them, when it would on mine with battery disconnected.

This launched my brain into wondering why.

When I bought my car from the dealership, it had a regular 24F 700 cca battery. I live in MN and it gets cold in the winter sub zero. I have alarm and car starter along with custom sound system plus Drone mobile so battery is always getting drained. My car wasn’t last two days before the battery was dead.

Went to batteries plus and invested in their best battery. No problems ever since. I can go 2 weeks worth without starting my car and it’s still strong. It’s a little over kill for most regular drivers but if your a little crazy and hardcore like me, it’s the only way to go.
