be envious now...i'm going to try to polarize the generator tonight, so there may just be a giant smoking mess if i screw up and jump the wrong things

i'm going to try to polarize the generator tonight, :

Probably no need to do that. If Pighead recalls correctly, you only have to polarize a brand new generator...

Let us know if it needs to be done or not. Personally I wouldn't so. My plan was to check with one of the GM generators that came in my old cruisers before testing it on a Toyota OEM generator.

We started her up (so nice to just pull the choke, pump the gas and turn the key...). Get 14.3 to 14.5 volts at the battery, I'm thinking the generator works fine.

spent the morning cleaning up and painting the shafts. the front shaft done and lubed, you can see all the crap i chipped out of and off it on the workbench and the rear shaft awaiting the same treatment.

we got the brakes bled, checked the park brake and i created a cool ass flame pattern on the paint on the rear shafts (actually, i just sped the drying process up considerably so we could stab it in and go for a spin ;) )

and after decades, pighead goes for a ride

I've gotta get one of them early column shift cruisers. That is too cool.

pulled the tank and found some crap in it. i'll send it out to be cleaned. pretty nasty looking flakes, but overall the tank looks pretty dang good inside. lots of corrosion all over it tho. also got the foot welded back on the right jump seat. pighead went to town with a scraper and the shop vac and she's all clean on the floors now. it was pretty nasty.

Did 3 or 4 more passes up & down the block, as soon as Ige got in, we ran out of gas...no gas in the float bowl, none in the filter. Strapped her back into the driveway, could get her to fire and run with the squirt bottle of gas down the carb throat, still nothing in the filter, and we know we've got gas in the tank. So we pushed her back in the garage. I threaded a wire back through the fuel line to the tank. No change. Blew some air back through the fuel line, got a few drips. Blew some air in through the filler and got gas out of the filter end of the line. Hooked it back up and she started, normal gas level in the filter & bowl. Looked down the sender hole and saw a fair amount of crap, so pulled the tank. Probably should have assumed it needed that before we put 5 gallons in...

I would have overhauled the heater myself.........just sayin'

Heaters are so over rated. Getting a soft top and doors is the secret. Then just leave a gap in the floor shifters holes. Open a window and ypu get all the heat you want. Works fine in my white FJ25 (#13 on the list). Just have to make sure the exhaust leaks aren't to big.

No donuts in the snow? What a couple of old farts. :D That first ride is always fun. :)

not much to report. had to flip the relay rod as the tapers are different, waiting on clamps for the tie rod to finalize all that stuff. still have to pull the drag link and replace/build it.

fender behind the filler revealed some evilness that will have to be addressed when body work is done. :frown: heat and lots of pb have gotten the hinges on the filler neck cover working again....kinda neat how they are fiberglassed in place

the tank is back from the rad shop and looks like new steel inside. need to grind down the rust on the outside and prep and paint it. floor under toolbox and gas tanks is almost cleaned up and ready for rustbullet and paint. rustbullet should be here today. air cleaner is filled with fresh oil. new battery is on the floor waiting to go in. :bounce::bounce2:

some more pics for the meantime

I think you will find a bracket on the underside of the fender. There should be a nut welded on the bracket where that hole is. These were for the early front seat belts and very common to rust. I have two 62s the early one is just a tub and didn't have the bracket. My later 62 does but doesn't have as much rust. When you do your body work it's best to remove the bracket for the repairs then spot weld back in. Keep it washed out and dry and should last a long time.

thanks to a fellow mudder, the tie rod end clamps i needed came today, so i cleaned and painted them and the tie rod and relay rod are officially done, just the drag link to do now (have a kit for the center arm, but it appears fine, so it will sit on the shelf for now)

finished cleaning the rust on the floor and the bottom and back of the fuel tank and the first coat of rust bullet has been applied. hopefully this stuff will rock down the road, because i really like it right now.
