LED headlights for 80 series

I have LED bulb on my factory headlights and i am sure they blind traffic, but so be it....they are much brighter and rig rarely driven at night and most of the time on dirt.

I liked my stock ones fine too. I also have really good vision at night, but for those people who look at everything in full bright all day (screens etc) I think it is hard on them. I drive at night with sunglasses on as most headlights from oncoming traffic hurt my eyes. I only went LED because i wanted round headlights as i don't think the LX450 headlights are nice looking from a vanity point of view.
Solid points. I prefer driving at night, but I also hate the lights. I think an astigmatism plays into that.

I must be the only person on the forums who likes my stock lights and thinks they’re just fine. They’re better than any of the semis at work, my wife’s ‘15 Outback, and most other vehicles I’ve driven.

I HATE the new Chevy pickup headlights. Lows and brights are blinding when coming at you. Quite a few new vehicles are the same.
have you driven say, a new 200 series? I think once you drive something new and see what the new LED and projectors are accomplishing it changes things.... my 80 head lights are comical.

Oh I’m sure they are. Better be, for that tech level. 😂. I just meant personal experience which, sadly, doesn’t include that yet.

I've looked at all the stuff you would need to convert to an HID projector. My problem is sourcing some Depo headlights. I've seen them on ebay but I'm just not quite sure what I'm getting. I'd want the ones with the glass lenses.
After looking at the retrofit projectors now they don't seem that hard to mount. They really just thread into the bulb holder in the housings. If I did it then I'd probably do bi-xenon projectors in the lows and highs. I just haven't gone down the rabbit hole of sourcing everything.

My other LC is an '18 150 series ... Those are seriously some of the best lights I've driven behind, including experience with a bunch of the high-end German rides.

It makes up (a little) for the fact everyone thinks that thing is a soccer mom mobile.

looking at getting the stedi LEDs as well, any feedback on them? much better than standard? also sunrk, was the superloom a good upgrade?

To date I only have the H4 version in the outer hi/lo beam inserts. Very good.
But the inserts are also basically new (genuine ones) as they were replaced about a yr earlier since the old ones were going bad and getting water inside. The Piranha superloom is excellent. Sadly the maker now refuses to sell the upgrade kit direct to the public. There are other similar kits. It comes down to how well it's installed, plus the condition of the light housings themselves.

I asked my mechanic (who's doing a full mechanical compliance inspection on my 80 in a few days time) about the led headlights and he says it's quite a grey area as legally the law here says using them is illegal since 80's never came from the factory with LED headlights but it comes down to other factors too.

If the rego check is all good with the H4 led lamps I'm going to fit the H1 hi-beam only version to the inner inserts and try those out as well.

I see no point attempting to get Sahara-style early-build headlights but they are around. I see no point trying HID's (they're also illegal in Oz). Lots of people have full LED 6 x 4 insert lights here now in 80's but I don't know how their claimed ADR compliance would stand up in court if insurance was voided because of having them.

Wife's new ride is an 18 GX (that I'm considering stealing), we we just talking last night about how much better the lights are than her 13 4Runner (incandescent). Headlights seem to be one of the few things Toyota doesn't always get right. Her 4Runner was fair at best, and my 3rd gen was near dangerous. The 80 is at least better than that, but I'm hoping for a good easy LED too. I have Depos and think I'm going to rewire to use both high and low for the H4's and the H1 as a driving light, maybe an amber LED to try that out.

Interesting idea. Here in Australia vehicles are only allowed to have two lights for lo-beam but high beam can be more.

There are no DRL's on 80's but there are a bunch of ways to add something if a person desires 'wank factor' LED whisker light DRL's like nearly every new vehicle has these days. Remember they can only be active (here in Oz) on lo-beam to be legal.

Any driving lights only legal here if they activate only on hi-beam.

I was just asked yesterday how I got my lights to be so bright..

Is that for a pair of 9005 rings? Does this require drilling or tapping the housing (I see phillips screws in your retention rings)?

I am considering this, the low beams are just terrible and I have the JDeere 'upgrade' bulbs. It's very easy to overdrive the low beams on the freeway.

I personally discovers the projection HL are not that good , I was messing with them for a long time until I install 150W in each 6000K Xenon Philips bulb in the non-projector HL on my LC100
nobody complaining on the road so I am not biding anyone , but lighting are not compare to anything I ever had

@FirstToy

I made a set for both hi and low beams.

They use the OEM screws and screw holes.

I tried the John deere bulbs with a harness. I prefer the diode dynamics, some people hate pineapple on pizza too.
i'm not being clear,
9005 is $18 , is that a pair (for both headlights) or single ring?

I'm not happy with the deere bulbs, and dunno why people hate pineapple on pizza :meh:

If you remove the ring from the back of the headlights (3 screws each, use a stubby phillips, headlights installed) you can remove the material from the 3 humps on each ring and the SL1's will install :)

The screws seem to be far enough away that the SL1 housing can flex.

Material removed, shoot for removing about half the thickness of the hump:
