Taking notes for "someday"...A little crossmember tech. I’ve been putting split cases in all of my 40/45/55 swaps and although you can hang the complete apparatus via the early 4 speed bellhousing with their 4 mounts, I prefer the early 60 3 piece crossmember. On the 40/45 you can only use the middle section and not the angle brackets because the frame is too narrow. On those I use 1/4” flat plate.

For the 55 all that needs to be done is trim some of the drivers side of the main section off.

I pulled the Warthog in and took the proper photos and got busy.

You can see how much was trimmed off the crossmember in this photo. Redrill 3/16” holes and egg them out a bit to make the angle of the frame.
Bolt it all together tight and burn in the sides.

Don’t be tempted (if you go this route) to push the transfer case up as high as you can. Since the side plates are welded in place you need enough room to lift up the transfer case enough to remove the center piece mount to pull the driveline back out for clutch work etc

Those timing gear covers are not a slam dunk. The Limo sat in the shop and waited for my return. On Monday I went to move it into the old shop so I could put some new goodies on my FJ60 and when I pulled it over to the other shop and turned it off there was a puddle of engine oil under it the next day.
I crawled under while it was loudly idling with no muffler and a steady drip was coming out of the top of the timing cover.
My heart sank. I’d done something wrong on assembly and I had to eat it and fix it.
This will be the first Mike has heard of this because when I screw something up it’s on me to fix it PLUS there only needed to be one of us not having a good time.
I also mention this because my team really came together and helped.
First, I message Beno. He says get Cam to ship a new OEM gasket and he would backfill the gasket. Smart. Cam is a one day USPS ship away.
Gasket goes out Tuesday. I decide to go ahead and get everything drained and pulled back apart in the mean time to have the gasket install Thursday. Turns out I put a long bolt where a short bolt goes in the timing gear cover and the seal was not flush. Dumb and costly move
Thursday I don’t get the gasket and so I dog up the tracking number and it’s still in Memphis.
Message Cam. He looks at the tracking too and says “that’s a lost part”
Friday it’s a no show again so Cam beats feet to UPS and FIRST overnights me another one. $100 for a $15 gasket.
I am tracking the package now ever hour and waiting on my front porch when I get this which is bull s*** because I’m sitting here.

I go a bit nuts and call my buddy here with UPS. He then calls the drivers boss and the boss said “get him the box you deadbeat”
So I jump in the car and meet this nitwit 1/2 way and get home and the rest is history. An hour later its all buttoned up with no leaks

When I got the 2F in my 40 rebuilt they screwed the squirter all the way in and then I had a nice, slow leak at the plate. Cam needs to come out. Which means the rad needs to come out.
Good times!
I am/was a nutjob about leaks. I tore into that to get things fixed. I see 2 leaks under the 40 now. Just add it to the list...When I rebuilt the 2F for my 40 I did this. That was about 20 years ago. Still leaks and maybe someday I'll fix it .
@Godwin did a nice writup somewhere on hot v cold adjustment and basically decided it’s a wash.
.08 .014 all I ever use. I adjust them to where the tool slips in but hits cold
Link to original thread to close the loop:Ha, I had forgotten about that. Probably more important to check and reset regularly that get hung up over hot vs. cold. It's just an old tractor motor.

towing with non-toyota?, have you moved to the dark side?
You’ll have to give me a towing opinion on the 1/2 ton GMC, I’m due for a new company truck...I switch vehicles with my dad when I have to tow beyond local.
I wish Toyota would make something I like bigger than the 4Runner and not $100,000
It’s fine. There is no way in hell I would ride around in a 3/4 Ton truck unless I towed big loads weekly. It could use a set of cheap airbagsYou’ll have to give me a towing opinion on the 1/2 ton GMC, I’m due for a new company truck...
Weenie, I ride around in a 1 1/2 ton truck and I'm staring at 68. I have to admit the clutch gets old in traffic. There is no way in hell I would ride around in a 3/4 Ton truck
