Installing a Joying 7" Android Head Unit in an 80

Woke up this morning and the inlaws had hit up my Amazon wish list. I got one of the Joying 7" units and new window motors. Gonna have a whole new ride after I gettem installed.

Just about done with my install... they got me an older unit, running 4.4.4, but it is far superior the radio that the PO had installed, and I'm sure it will be perfect for years to come. Plus, at around $200 if I need/want to replace it with an updated model in a few years I won't feel guilty.

Along with the new head unit I installed a new 4ch 400 watt kenwood kac-m1804. This fits my needs as it definitely boosts output, sounds great, I don't plan to run a sub, and it installed nicely into the stock amplifier location. For anyone nervous about wiring up and amplifier this one really is simple and easy. One harness that plugs into the amp, and you connect the harness to your speakers, and then the power going into your head unit. Connect rca's from the hu to the amp and you're gtg.

Now I just need to keep tidying it all up and get my dash back together.

Everyone still enjoying this? I would mainly be using for GPS....so can I use one of the GPS apps without using a hotspot while driving? I will need to search, etc. What OBDII ports is anyone using that works well?

If the gps app you use downloads the maps for offline use you should be good. I know alk copilot works like that, but for off the highway guidance I have no clue which apps work good for that.

I'm happy with mine. I've used it with a hotspot and maps, it works well. The only issue I have had is that once in a while the screen doesn't come up, the unit is still working but the screen isn't displaying. A factory reset has fixed the issue both times this happened.

Just a heads up... I bought the unit discussed in this thread. I primarily use my LC for hunting and anticipated using the unit for maps (OnX and/or Google BackCountry). After discussion with Joying, Onx, and Google, the conclusion is that the unit is not compatible with OnX or BackCountry. Don't buy it if that's what you want to do with it.

Interesting, backcountry would be my primary use for it other then the audio.. Why on earth wouldn't it work with backcountry, but work with other Gp's enabled nav apps?

Do you know what version of android your Joying head unit is running. Mine is 4.4 and while it works well I can only load 4 or 5 apps due to limited storage. The older versions of android don't allow the different types of internal storage to be "joined" up.

I don't want to redirect this thread - you can always PM me. To close the loop, though the unit I bought is running Android 5.1.1. If you have a way to get BackCountry to work, I'm all ears.
I can get into a fairly lengthy explanation of how we've tried to get it working, but this was the first clue that there was a problem... See attached photo (when I open BC Navigator). SD card installed & mounted. BackCountry recognizes the card's presence, but I can't choose it as the default storage device.

Update - Still at a standstill with BC Navigator. I reset the unit and have successfully installed the OnX maps app (no idea why all the sudden it works). On to problem #2... There is only 1gb memory in the unit that is not expandable. Apps will only save to the internal memory, not the two usb ports or the SD slot. With about a half a gig available, I won't be able to download many maps for travel. Many places I hunt don't have cell service, so a hot spot or mirroring my phone aren't really an option. Asked Joying about it and they recommended buying a newer unit with "twice the memory" - 2GB. Right.
Not posting to complain, but rather to inform anyone considering this unit in a situation similar to mine.

Can anyone else running this unit confirm they have the same limitations reading/writing to sd/USB with bcnav or other apps? That's a deal breaker for me :(

i don't have any solutions. just want to post that I also have a Joying unit...so far I am pleased...... and if I experience trouble....I hope the answer is not to buy another unit. That is a load of horse****.

After almost 50 emails with google tech support (BC Navigator) and Joying, I sent a final note to Joying letting them know I was going to return the item. (I was polite). Got this response:

Dear friend,

Also maybe the head unit can not much more compatible with your backcountry app .
we have the 2GB head unit . But we can not sure that it will be sure workable with your backcountry .

if you want the 2GB head unit , you need to pay for the different price . $50 (update to 2GB) +$50 (update to android 6.0 )+$40 (DHL shipping cost ) =$140
but you need to return the old head unit back to China . the returning shipping cost will be paid on your side .

Any ideas of you ? please suggest .
Candy

Glad I bought this thing through Amazon. They were great about taking it back. Glad to be done with the drama.

I had to pay to have mine shipped back to China to be fixed. It was very expensive and kind of a hassle. The customer service was pretty decent though and it's been fine since

It's time, the Joying has basically died. After 7 years it started throwing UID errors on boot and the screen won't display most of the time at all. It probably needed some software updates, no idea if they were ever available, but Android 4.4 is what's still on it. Not sure what I'm putting in next, but I'll probably post about whatever I end up choosing.

I went from a joying 4.4.4 to a Sony Xav. I definitely recommend Sony’s Xav line.
