Sweet! I already ordered one yesterday, back up cam and elm too! [emoji41]

Hi just received my "JOYING" here in Canada, I ordered it directly from the Manufacture through Aliexpress. Took five days to get here. I have only set it up on my bench to set up the apps I want in this unit. The supplied GPS app seems decent, but I like to use " Back country" for my off road uses, it records tracks and allows for GPRS files etc. I am sure the Tuner is " crap " as it surely a tuner similar to what we find in an Android phone. The front end of these devices simply are not designed with the filtering and tuned front ends we find in radios. As per Sbman, I am not concerned as the only time I use the RF radio is in the city, other wise I am using Tune-in or some other app or MP3 music on file. I would not suggest to anyone to open the radio to " improve " the FM capabilities, these things are high density SMD and one will only damage the unit. The one thing that could be done is to install an RF pre-amplifier for the 88 to 108 Mhz band. This would certainly improve the units RF sensitivity, but will not improve its selectivity from Image interference ( also usually very poor on this kind of receiver ) . This limitation is also one of the reasons the unit can be prices this way, In luxury vehicles with OEM radios, the display is interfaced to a real radio receiver, not a single chip wonder that is sitting on the Android board somewhere.

So My first impression of this unit is Price / Quality index is excellent, I bought this to go in my fire damaged HDJ 81, ( I had a dash fire and burned out the entire center of the dash including heater box and ducts. That's all fixed now and thought instead of replacing the OEM radio with something similar, I would try one of these and give the HDJ81 a Landcruiser 120 look LOL )

I am considering ordering a second one for my BJ 74 just so I am using same equipment for both rigs. I opted for this unit for the same reason as Sbman, one button Mute, analog rotary Volume control were must haves.

For those asking what version of Android, its running Kit-cat 4.4, and appears stable, that said, I have played with it one evening, with no speakers attached but am none the less impressed with clear easy to read display and interface.

Eager to hear your thoughts after install.

I'm also looking into this, but for now I'm very happy with my alpine 1din with DAB radio.
Here the fm band will be phased out over the next year or two, and I love having DAB super clear radio.
The adapters for DAB is a no-go for me.

I got mine in on monday, took a week to ship, not bad. I used the Scosche-car Audio/video 1984-up Toyota Power 4-speaker Connector (ta02b) - harnes to bypass the factory amp. Worked like a charm. Wires matched color for color. There were a few wires from the new headunit that I didnt use/wire into but that might change as I work on the back up cam. Back up camera Esky EC170-06 World Smallest HD Color CCD Waterproof Vehicle Car Rear View Backup Camera, 170 Degree Viewing Angle Rearview Camera(0.86*0.65*0.50 inch which ill be working on tonight or tomorrow. I had to trim dash opening on the bottom and top for a proper fit. I used a razor blade and shaved what I needed off. If you want to have the toyota symbol on start up the password is 126 to change the factory settings, FYI. Radio reception isnt great but works, antenna works, sound quality great, easy to use... um... what else, feel free to ask. I also ran a pre amp cable and RCA cables for subwoofers into the headunit. Sorry for the crappy pics but finished up late last night.

my truck is still in garage being buttoned up after replacing dash and chucks of wire harness, So I am not yet in a position to install. I just ordered in a $ 10.00 pre amp from Aliexpress.com : Buy Car Stereo Radio Aerial Male Antenna Adapter Lead Cable Car Radio Amplifier Cable Adaptor from Reliable cable acsr suppliers on Dongtian Car DVD Player | Alibaba Group Seems like little extra to spend to have a better FM reception. Thanks all for sharing you install experience. I will post when I get around to installing this . I have connected a HTC one with a mirror connection and played video from phone to radio head nicely. What I am curious is how to use the 2 USB connections for Mass storage and USB cam. Any one with more info on the USB port usage be appreciated.

Very much considering this head unit. Would love to root it to lollipop so Android auto could work
i would be very carefull with that. I think the manufacture has tweaked to OS, certainly certain drivers to change the colors of the buttons etc. I doubt that would work after. I opend the unit up and the inside looks as I expected a unit of this price range would look. The AM-FM receiver is a single small board ~ 1" , 1" by 1/8" thick, The unit is virtually an empty pox with one main board that has the Android main board plugged into it. ( so Joying makes the main board and probably buys the other boards. The audio Amp is again essentially a one chip design that uses the back of the radio as a heat sink. The heat sink would appear heavily undersized for a 45W per ch rated radio, it weighs less than 1/2 the weight of most 1 Din Radios. Now the good news... While I have not been able t get a USB cam going om here, I have plugged in a mouse and a keyboard and even a track pad. While not always the handiest while driving LOL, can be great for passenger browsing and data entry etc. I will try a newer USB cam as the ones I tried are several years old.

So the reverse cam I mentioned above is not exactly plug n play. What I was missing was a direct lead from the reverse lights to the headunit's "back" labeled wire. Apparently needed to trigger the display. AV cables with red wire at the plug ends are available and would have made the install easier. Joying has some cam kits on their website that come with the AV cables with red wires. Just noticed after the fact.

Is there an aftermarket USB Android tuner solution by chance?

Search "dvb-t usb fm" for usb tuners. They only work for FM. And you'll also need to get an app from the app store.

For a car set-up, you'd also need OTG charging + USB host at the same time to use the tuner and keep the unit charged...at least on an Android tablet. May just work with the Joying given its got its own power supply like a head unit.

Thanks! I've got an Android tablet with the OTG cable. Great little setup, so much more functional and flexible than the iPad.

I know this is a few months old but this thread inspired me to try the Joying HU. I went with the Scosche (ta20b) and snipped the plug off the Joying harness then soldered/heat-shrunk the Scosche in. I also used the same FM amplifier (ANT-208). The Scosche has a wire for the Antennae control as does the harness with the Joying - I hooked these up as well.

PROBLEM: (pardon my car stereo ignorance) I plug everything in and it pops my 10 amp fuse. All the wires are insulated well and the HU starts its boot up sequence then when the antennae starts to rise *POP*. Not sure if it's the antennae that's actually causing it, but it's happening at the same time. I unplugged the FM amplifier and got the same results. I have not unplugged the stock amplifiers. Could this be causing the blown fuse?

@sbman now that you have this unit for a few months can you post a review of how it is working now and if you would buy it again.

thanks

I am happy with the unit. I have only had one issue with it, I loaded some app from the app store, an audio level mixer and the unit got really flaky not wanting to boot sometimes after I added that. I factory reset it and all back to normal.

I use it all the time for streaming music on the road from my phone to the headunit and also use my bluetooth ODB reader with it most of the time too. I am planning to add an external equalizer to it soon since I'm not happy with the EQ apps I find on the play store.

I have the rear view camera from joying. I've mounted it between the license plate lights on the tailgate. I was going to trace the license plate wiring through to the body. I have the cable that came with it, the yellow RCA cable with the red wire extending about 6" on each end. Where do these red leads get wired to? I assume the rear lead (from the camera) goes to the reverse light + and the front lead to the head unit "back"? The yellow RCA seems self-explanatory to the back of the HU. Any clue where the other line from the camera (the black 3/8" jack looking one gets wired to? The diagram shows the license plate light but I'm not convinced that's correct.

Side note - the install was simple. Just like noted in earlier posts. I have pioneers in the door speakers and this HU. No sub. Sounds better than before but not a ton. I am enjoying music streaming from my phone and the hands-free phone calls. Antenna acts up a little bit. It will still rise when I am not using the radio but the BT instead. No big deal though. Any advice for using a 4-channel amp with this HU and the pioneer door speakers? Can any android users recommend a good (off-line/no data used) navigation app? I'm not using a hotspot so I lose internet connection when I'm not at the house.

So this unit's GPS works without a Cellular hotspot? But if you want to stream music you get a hotspot and use it??

What about Satellite radio capabilities.?

The HU has it's own GPS antenna that works only off GPS, not cellular. It runs some chinese software. It's ok and works best when you type in an address instead of searching for a business name or something. I don't think it takes traffic into account when routing. That's why I stick with g-maps on my iphone mounted at eye level.
I stream music through my phone and the HU bluetooth connection. You could set up a wifi 4G hotspot and download spotify on the HU and use it that way.
I don't use sat radio and I am unfamiliar with android so I'm not sure there is a sat radio option.

I wanted to upgrade the head unit in the landcruiser. I looked at the big names, Pioneer, Kenwood, etc... but all too expensive for the features I want:

  • Hands free kit w/ external microphone
  • Google maps navigation
  • 6-7" screen
  • Rotating volume knob
  • Streaming music
  • Touchscreen interface
  • Backup camera input
  • Drive video to external monitors
I found these features in the sub $300 JOYING Quad Core HD 1024x600 resolution 7" head unit.

This is a double DIN, quad core android device with an internal Amp and radio tuner, along with a good number of inputs and outputs.

I started by making up a wire harness adapter. Using a Metra 70-8112 adapter and the harness that came with the JOYING unit, I soldered up an adapter cable. This adapter includes breakouts for the RCA so that you can use the existing amp in the Landcruiser.

I've been searching around about this unit and can't find an answer to my question. Question: Can this unit display an external camera while driving? Not just when in reverse. I want to hook up a camera in the front and back of my truck and be able to view them whenever I choose. Thanks.
