It’s so the shifter comes through the doghouse in the right place instead of up against the heater housing.
Gotcha, so if I'm already running a aftermarket heater, this is likely not an issue.. I have a SM420 currently so my doghouse has already been modified a bit

Other way around. It moves the shifter forwards, not back.

I do have a transmission which is with stick in the back,if I replace this cover with the old style where stick in the front will work with out any internal and external modifications in the transmission.

Yes fits the same. Really like the location of how the four speed feel in the 40 series. Using a 60/70 series moves it back and more awkward shifting. Also only the late 60 series shift cane is available for LHD. Those were made for the 3F bellhousing. When used with the bellhousing for the 2Fs the shifter angles over further to the left getting in the way of the narrower 40 series.

So just find the top cover from bj42 5 speed transmission and put it on this and that's it.
