Not what you want to hear but it's not that expensive to change to 16" rims. You get a lot more choice in 16" vs 15".
... and I wouldn't have to deal with split rims. Harumphf.

Like usual, your build thread provides much excitement.
I've lost count, how many cruisers do you have now? Stateside and UAE?

Either way. My 1994 has 16" splits with new Dunlop 7.50x16 tires and I plan on keeping them....at least for now.

LOLOL!! 'Build thread' is a little bit of a misnomer. Mostly I just whatsapp people and ask them to do things for me. Here's an example dealing with lug nuts:

Here's another example. I sometimes pass along Mud posts to help with the technical info.

Its fun and fits within my budget. Not sure if my mechanics love or hate me. I'd like to think I bring them interesting work.

Regarding the number of LC's... probably too many.

How tall are they? Were they hard to find? I'm starting to think about new rims in spite of myself. Maybe even new rims from Toyota.

John, the pickup came with new Toyota split rims and the Dunlop SP Qualifier tires. The spare was trashed and I didn't have any trouble finding one although I did have to get a Dunlop dealership to order it (took maybe 2 days?). They are advertised as 31.8" on 6" rims. I'm out of town but can measure the standing height when I get home if you want. These tires are not available in the US and they are radials and "tube type" which I think means tube friendly. I don't think you have to use a tube with them. Not sure what I will do for tires if and when I ever need them in the US.

I really would like to put the most appropriate rubber on the pickup before shipping it over to my son. If you could snap a photo of the details on the tire that would be great, but I suspect that SP Qualfier should be enough info. I just tried calling the dunlop pro shops here in Dubai, but they just closed. Will try again in the morning. Thanks for the suggestion!

Reading the last couple pages reminds me a lot of trips I have taken to Latin America. Running around meeting all the locals, going to all the shops, getting the Inside info on this truck and that. I have really enjoyed those trips and made a lot of friends doing that.

Cheers

Here ya go.
THank you G! Those look like real 'work truck' tires. Very appropriate. I've never seen a tire size in this format before. Very interesting. Glad to have the photos so I can show them to the dunlop guys and say, well you can buy them in KSA... I found a lot of ads for Dunlop SP Qualifier TG21 7.50 R16 114/112S in countries outside the Middle East, like South Africa and the UK, but nothing here. How odd.

See if you can buy 16" OEM steel rims that are not split rim like these: For Sale - Oem steel wheels 16 x 6.5”

That Dunlop is also made in a Tubeless and of course there are many other choices in a 16" rim.

as some have already suggested , go for the 16 " rims .
plenty of choice on tires .
the best size tire for HZ1 on road is 265/75/16 , in off road 7,50/16.
just my opinion

I’d change to a non-split rim and get passenger rated tires... it’s going to be a lot more serviceable here in the States and a more comfortable ride. Just my 2-cents.

The Troopy was such a smoother ride with solid steel rims (Toyota OEM) and the BFG’s. Balanced better and a softer ride.

Well I've been doing some shopping around and my used tire and rim guy in Sharjah has offered this up:

My son, who will be driving the pickup likes these. I'm a little concerned because they are only 6 inches wide--the truck has 31x10.5R15 on 15x7 split rims on it now. I'd like to go for at least 33 inch tires and when look to see what is available, there are quite a lot of options, but to get tall tires I seem to have to go fairly wide, like a 28 75 R 16 which is almost 33 inches tall and 11.2 inches wide.

But I also found this chart:
1580935861541.webp

Which seems to suggest that the widest I can go is 205mm.

I can get the dunlop or a BF goodrich in a BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM3 7.50 R16 116Q E1 which is a little under 32 inches high, but cant seem to see anything taller in a narrow tire.

If any of you have suggestions for available tires, or comments on the chart, I'd appreciate it. I've also done some searching and really have not found threads here in the 70 forum on max tire sizes for unmodified 70 series trucks, but that's probably because I have not looked long enough. But comments in this regard also would be welcome.

BTW, I did also do some googling and from what I could see, the H55 transmission always seems to have the same gear ratios, so perhaps my fear that I put in a transmission that has different gearing was unfounded. I'm also still interested and looking for information on what a sensible change to the ring and pinions of the two differentials might be. So if anyone has some thoughts on that, they also would be most welcome.

But I am determined at this point to swap out the split rims.

The center bore of that wheel appears to have been cut open in the field. Perhaps to clear a large hub bore. I'd run from it.

Why not just do a spare tire from 4runner/fjc ?

The stock alloys on my Prado are 16x6 and they fit 235/85R16 tires great (approx 31.5x9). Not sure how they’d do with 255/85’s.
