FAT is my first choice for parts still available from Toyota. Convenient to not have a minimum order amount and you can pickup at their store to save on shipping. Downside is you bought the part you ordered regardless of whether it was what you needed...this is easily mitigated by doing research, etc.

Looks like you are making some steady progress!!

Spoiler Alert:

The @IdahoDoug video just shows the steps in the FSM and lets you know two steps to skip (cables stay attached and tied out of the way, and part of the plenum doesn't get disassembled). I liked it because I am a visual learner but the FSM covers in detail if memory serves me correctly.

The machine shop needs the valve stem seals to complete the work on the head. :bang: The seals are in the gasket kit which is on back order with FAT. :bang: Looks like there will be no progress for the next week or two...:bang:

Dang. Bummer for sure.

Time to check these bolts.

So I’m checking the diameter in the upper half of the threads in multiple spots.

All bolts measured between 10.80-10.84. This seems well within spec to me since the minimum acceptable diameter per FSM appears to be 10.60.

For anyone that has done this before, feel free to weigh in...

All bolts seem to clean up nice and visually look practically brand new after a quick wipe down with a paper towel, except for two. These have some slight pitting and gunk in the threads. They are still within spec, but I’m tempted to swap these out with new ones just as a precaution and so that I have a spare or two available if I encounter any issues during the reinstall.

In the picture below, the one in the middle is representative of how the other 11 look. The two on the outside are the ones that I referenced above.

All this heavy lifting of bolts and calipers really works up an appetite. Time for some bacon and a feta cheese omelette

Whats the washer for on the paper towel? Mine was wire wrapped to one of the valve cover holes when i got it back from the machine shop. Mind you, I didnt drop it off, and dont wanna look like an idiot when im asked about it. LOL

Mine is a head bolt washer. It was the only one that came out with the bolt. The rest of them were stuck to the head. I meant to pop them all off before I dropped off the head but I forgot. I hope I get my other 13 back. :-)

Well the head is obviously not done yet, but I was able to drop off the valve stem seals and I got my other 13 head bolt washers back from the shop. I also decided not to purchase the two extra head bolts. Realistically, those two should clean up just fine with a little scrubbing. I can find a better use for $40.

i can measure mine if you need a couple. I'm going the stupid route and putting in arp studs.

I'd not re use head bolts period. Not worth the savings if they lead to a problem down the line. That's just one man's opinion.

...well, now you've got me second guessing my decision to reuse them. They are all within spec of the FSM but there seems to be some differing opinions here on MUD. I guess I need to give it some more consideration. Another $210+ decision to make. At this rate, I may need to rename this thread, FZJ-8-my 401k

Thus the word Opinion. I am working on customer's vehicles, I wont risk bad head bolts.
