I’ve always wondered about this. Has there been issues with the 34mm shaft failing? I can’t see a problem with a 34mm shaft that a 38mm shaft solves.

So, anyways, here’s some more tech.

The front output selector shafts are actually the same length, it’s just that the forks are oriented differently and some different machining done at the ends.

The High-Low selector shafts are oriented differently as well.

The high range gear set on the 38 is larger. Haven’t counted teeth yet to verify gear ratios.

Pretty cool you have both to put side by side!

Another great thread for reference. One of the many reasons to love this site! Thank you @Hugh Heifer

Good ol Jerry the Machinist turned out the reliefs on the brass rear window gear I got from Scraps. Started on some assembly until I realized the little threaded plate that affixes to the back side of the assembly main plate for the window gear screws to thread into, was missing. I recall a thread awhile back where a guy was saying he was having problems with that little threaded plate, and I was kinda scratching my head as to what he was talking about. It clicked right away when I attempted to screw the gear housing to the main plate. No biggie. Easy to make as long as I can find the right tap.

On my way to having a real, live, working rear window gear!!😱🤯
Still need to acquire some of the small screws that hold the cover down to the gear housing - for some reason the screws I have don’t quite fit.

As a note - setting the arms at a difference of 5 teeth set the rollers dead even.

Do you have all the rubber/weatherstripping figured out? I got my window working but the various rubber I have sourced so far has caused a problem. Window works and rattles with no rubber but with the various rubber pieces installed it binds so bad it’s a no go. I had to set that part aside for now to regain some sanity.

The undercoating still needs stripped off of the underside of the inner and outer fenders. While I had them out, decided to try to clean the stubborn buildup of dirt that has stained the sides of the inner fenders with vinegar. This seems to be another thing a lot of Cruisers have in common from years of driving around on dirt roads and such. The silicas like to bond themselves to the paint and resist the normal auto store cleaning products.
This was more of a trial for other guys to see, as all this on mine will be painted over anyways.
So yeah, vinegar and and a green scrubby. And elbow grease.
