FJ40 Cross-Country Expedition: Will YOU join us???

I'm guessing this voyage of cross country cruising will be going for awhile, and more people will want to do a leg as they find out about it over time. I'm Thinking about doing multiple legs over time. I'm planning one from Post Falls ID to Missoula MT and talked with @Idaho yota from Salmon ID about doing a "baton pass" there. I am also planning on heading west toward Seattle at some point. Maybe do a baton pass around Vantage WA, or the winery just west of George. Also planning on heading north into Canada at some point, and doing a baton pass at say the Kokanee brewery in Creston. I'll have a beer at the brewery and someday when someone comes south from further North they can have a beer there and that will pass the baton. Nelson Canada is also an option for me. Of course document the trips with pics along the way.

The convoy idea is the way to go.

I think a Texas Convoy would be great.
Having one 40 on the road is cool, multiple is awesome. We'd never get out of restaurant or gas station parking lots because of the intrest.

you may have missed this but you have all of California and Nevada covered... lol

Half the journey is the company you keep.

Definitely interested in participating for a segment in a 100 mile radius of 37725, Dandridge TN, Great Smoky Mountains area.
The truck is up for it but I have been too damn lazy to finish the roof & doors so weather is an issue.

This range should reach to the areas around....

Asheville, NC
Cookville, TN
Chattanooga, TN
Bristol, VA
Cherokee, NC
London, KY

I'm in central NC and can cover 200 or so miles. Looking forward to being a part of this adventure.

If this occurs in October, I am in for 100 or so miles from 11209. Who is making the decal for our trucks to celebrate the first running of the annual cross country adventure? I would kick in some funds for the design and printing.

More playing around with google maps... I haven't been to Yosemite in ages. Certainly would make for some great photos. Nice little stop at Valley Hybrids (@orangefj45) and then camp at the campground just outside Yosemite (Friday night). Then take my time and enjoy Yosemite and drop into Lee Vining to hand off to @John McVicker from Big Pine (with Mono Lake in the background). Then the brutal climb back up Tioga Pass. As I mentioned, that part of the trip scares me some... Lot of elevation loss/gain (up to 8% grade). Spend more time in Yosemite and then maybe camp Saturday night again at the same campground. Then drive home Sunday from there. Breaks the trip into shorter distances, gives the ol' 40 a chance to recuperate lol. What do you think @jocww?

Tioga Pass (el. 9,943 ft. / 3,031 m.) is a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. State Route 120 runs through it, and serves as the eastern entry point for Yosemite National Park, at the Tioga Pass Entrance Station. It is the highest highway pass in California and in the Sierra Nevada.[1] Mount Dana is to the east of the pass. There are several trailheads into the Yosemite backcountry which begin at Tioga Pass, including the trail to the Gaylor Lakes to the west/northwest, and the rough trail to the summit of Mount Dana. Dana Meadows is immediately south of the pass alongside the highway, as the pass itself is roughly angled north/south as opposed to east/west. Dana Meadows contains several small lakes.

This pass, like many other passes in the Sierra Nevada, has a gradual approach from the west and drops off to the east dramatically, losing more than 3,000 ft (914 m) by the time the road reaches U.S. Route 395.

Either that or stay at my cabin in tahoe after doing rubicon??? O yea lets do that

If you end up anywhere near, definitely stop by!
Obviously we have plenty of parts here if any repairs are needed.
:-)
Georg @ Valley Hybrids & Cruiser Brothers

Sign me up for 100 mi around Silver City, NM. Great idea

Maybe we count the return part of your trip as the leg of the trip and then you hand it off to me for the Yosemite leg... ;). Just need someone from Reno or points north traveling down there.

To be honest Im open to anything. I would love to see Bodi one of these days.
I would love to take the 40 to Yosemite. But I can hit Reno before or after. Maybe do Yosemite with you and then go to Reno and do Rubi backwards after. We should meet up for coffee and talk details.

I would like to start in Key West, Any Keys members? My thoughts are that it's too dang hot to do it most of the year, Mid winter Snow Birds clog the roads and facilities. I'm not up for a boomarang from Cape Coral/ Old Tamiami Trail to KW then back, I may Trailer the 40 down to KW... Just seems right someone has to start at that point "Mile Marker 0." 270 miles back to the Cape..That's about 200 more miles than I really want to drive the old '71. But what a wonderful drive it is. Any thoughts Sggoat Gary?

If this takes place next summer/fall or if it's the second annual event, I'll probably be with the Colorado bunch.

Almost 50 have signed up... in only one week!!!

This is going to happen folks...

Below is another way of looking at the same information. Green routes (these are possible routes, those participating will of course decide the route they take) are already covered... need coverage for the red...

Some of these owners (e.g. @Bluegrass40 in Kentucky) currently "connect" multiple Legs... so not ALL of these Legs can happen simultaneously, but they are all certainly possible over time... especially so when more people sign up.

A couple of questions to begin to ponder:
  • When? We could start as early as October... understanding it will likely take at least 2-3 months to complete
  • East to West? Or West to East? It may more sense to start in the East, but I for one don't care much. I can drive my 40 in the winter... just need to look ahead at the weather.

San Francisco to New Orleans and Florida Keys to Maine are separate possibilities as well.

Once we get one Leg "connected" I'll schedule a conference call to chat about some of the particulars for those involved in the leg... I think we will need at least 3-4 "Regional" leaders to help with the specifics

What else should we start to think about?

Remember, you can take a look at the most current map (I try to update it every day) here...

this is a really cool thread, and if I had the time this fall, I would put "Mello" on the road and join the trek...
