Can we get this together for October? That would be great temp wise IMO

Ha! I'm all the way over on the left coast, but I'm thinking the same thing timewise.

I'm having surgery on August 30th... I should be able to make an October trip.

But Peter (@Bambi Girl) had to reschedule his trip to Vegas from Oct to April... so, he's not available. :(

As I said earlier, I'm in Vegas, but prefer to drive off pavement as much as possible... when I find out for sure I can participate, I'll check with Riley (@jetranger) and Allen (@Allen man) and see where we're going and how far.

Its a long drive to Reno, but maybe we can meet some of the Reno MUDders halfway or something... I really don't want to go to California, but could go up into Utah, Eastern NV, Northern AZ.

I'd like to restrict it to ~< 200 miles each way.

Maybe Greg (@redrock) can join the Vegas group as well... what do you say, Greg?

More playing around with google maps... I haven't been to Yosemite in ages. Certainly would make for some great photos. Nice little stop at Valley Hybrids (@orangefj45) and then camp at the campground just outside Yosemite (Friday night). Then take my time and enjoy Yosemite and drop into Lee Vining to hand off to @John McVicker from Big Pine (with Mono Lake in the background). Then the brutal climb back up Tioga Pass. As I mentioned, that part of the trip scares me some... Lot of elevation loss/gain (up to 8% grade). Spend more time in Yosemite and then maybe camp Saturday night again at the same campground. Then drive home Sunday from there. Breaks the trip into shorter distances, gives the ol' 40 a chance to recuperate lol. What do you think @jocww?

Tioga Pass (el. 9,943 ft. / 3,031 m.) is a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. State Route 120 runs through it, and serves as the eastern entry point for Yosemite National Park, at the Tioga Pass Entrance Station. It is the highest highway pass in California and in the Sierra Nevada.[1] Mount Dana is to the east of the pass. There are several trailheads into the Yosemite backcountry which begin at Tioga Pass, including the trail to the Gaylor Lakes to the west/northwest, and the rough trail to the summit of Mount Dana. Dana Meadows is immediately south of the pass alongside the highway, as the pass itself is roughly angled north/south as opposed to east/west. Dana Meadows contains several small lakes.

This pass, like many other passes in the Sierra Nevada, has a gradual approach from the west and drops off to the east dramatically, losing more than 3,000 ft (914 m) by the time the road reaches U.S. Route 395.

So I just rechecked my calendar. I have a BLM Council meeting I have to attend Oct 14-15. I have flexibility from Oct 16th thru the 27th or 28th to plan something...if I start now.

Keeping with @ginmtb , I could work up a leg from Mammoth-ish, Big Pine, out to Saline Valley, and down to Panamint Valley.

Then it would be a question of going out thru Trona, resupply in Ridgecrest, and thru the El Pasos to pick up central Ca peeps coming over from Bakersfield to Mojave, or heading out the southeast corner of Panamint thru Goler, Striped Butte Valley, Warm Springs, Shoshone/Tecopa and on to Vegas.

Ft. Irwin :) - a long time ago on a club trip with Southern Nevada Land Cruisers, a couple of members, Tom and Sharon, decided to lead a Death Valley Run, including a couple of nights camping. <snip> "It's not a Run, it's an Adventure."

Sounds about par for an SNLC run. I (John White aka the Grey Goose) was a charter member and the Chairman of the first Glitter Gulch Gambol. The first VP/second President Mike Gibson and I now live near Durango, Colorado. My '74 FJ55 is long gone as is Mike's '73 FJ40 but we both have FJ60s now, his with a freshly rebuilt 2f. Glad there's still some old timers around and that the club is still kickin'.

I'm in the Inland Northwest Between Spokane WA and Couer D' Alene ID. I can do a couple hundred miles on a weekend, preferably before the snow falls.

We were active in the club soon after we bought our '84 FJ60 new from Toyota West on Decatur. We were out 4-wheeling NW of Lone Mountain when we met up with Bob and Esther Ensworth, who invite us to attend the next club meeting at Shakey's Pizza on Boulder Highway. We happened to park out by the front window - as members were gathering around the table someone noticed the brand new FJ60 out front and asked "Who owns the Cadillac?" So from then on our handle was "Cadillac". I was VP one of the three years we were in the club.

We moved away from Las Vegas (the first time) in 1986. We still own the '84, along with a '71 FJ40, a '76 FJ40 (the one we'll drive if we can join the expedition in CO), and an '86 FJ60/'89 FJ62 which are being combined into the FJ60, along with an H55f.

So... does this mean you are signing up???o_O If so, from where and how far???

This is where we stand right now... looking good!!! We need a few more people from the Southwest... South and Mid-Atlantic States to sign up! Pacific Northwest too... but I figure that's just a matter of time...:)

Reminder... you can view the "live" map... with the area you've volunteered under your name on the left of the map... here...

Also, yellow means the Owner will join... just not now... maybe a few months down the road... those 40's are not quite ready!

PS. @4Cruisers That Ft. Irwin story was something... when was that?! Unbelievable...

Ah, you were after my time then, I went inactive around '82 or '83. Mike might have still been around.
Bob and Ester are salt of the earth. Their kids too.

Its great to see a couple of peeps pop up that have been active longer than I. I attended my first TLCA event in 1986, and my first Gambol in 1990. Met Rod Wiggins and Paul Enoch. Maybe it was Enos. Steve Zydek too. I'm pretty sure that's where I first met @toploader too.

SNLC was loads of fun, plenty of great runs, including many overnight/multiple night trips. We went pretty far afield, well into the Arizona Strip, southwestern Utah, Mojave Desert, and a lot of Nevada. Rod and Paul were just a few of many of the top-notch members.

That was late November 1984 or 1985. The route into Death Valley was over Avawatz Pass. We got snowed out in Death Valley so the trip was cut short by a day. All in all a fun and exciting epic SNLC run.

We had a lot of fun in the early days too. We used to go out during the summer thunderstorm floods and pull moron. . . unforturantes that had tried to drive through the underpasses out, then refuse tips but give 'em a "You've been assisted by a member of SNLC" card. We did a lot in central Nevada and once after I blew my engine and couldn't go, they went to Telluride, Colorado. Stories of that run are in part why I moved here. We had gone up to Armagosa (?) dunes and fenced off an area for the BLM to save the scarab beetle that lives only there. Then later that year we were searching out a site for the Gambol and found one of the beetles in the sand down by Primm. Put it in a bottle and took it to the BLM. The guy at the desk freaked! "You can't capture those, that's a scarab beetle from Armagosa and they're endangered." We told him where we found it, he called us liars and threatened to arrest us. We laughed, gave him the beetle and left.

Sure. You can mark me down for 100 miles around the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but it looks like @1911 also has that covered.

Wouldn't it be even more fun with two or more on the same route though? Like a convoy or a movement (cue Alice's Restaurant on the ipod).

However, if everyone wants their own little piece, I will happily cut mine back to make room.

The convoy idea is the way to go.
