Finally!!!! Saginaw PS pump conversion kit for FJ60s!!!!!

I just cut the rear mounting bolts off the saginaw pump with a grinder and cutting wheel. Left about 1/4 inch and put a grommet over it to keep flesh wounds to a minimum. Install went good. Hardest part removing that back bolt on the pump to bracket. In the end I just took the Toyota bracket off the motor with the yota pump still on it and put it in a vise. 6 point socket and a breaker bar made short work of that sticking rear bolt and no exhaust manifold in the way.

Just a comment to complement Georg. I called him on Tuesday and my pump kit was delivered on Friday (the shipping information was on my email within an hour), everything fit as expected. Great customer service Georg, and I appreciate you spending the time on the phone to discuss the install. Im a few weeks out from trying it out as, in my usual fashion of "while Im here", Ive taken the manifolds off and removing the smog equipment. Thanks, Im looking forward to trying it out.

Thanks for the orders guys! Happy to help with any other cruiser parts needs as well!

I'm going to add some information that might help some of you guys. I've been away from the LC world a couple years, my son decided he wanted a crawler so i built him a mini truck, now hes 10 and outwheeling most adults. I just finished up a home brew hydro assist on his truck. I rebuilt the pump and box. The steering box isn't hard if you have pretty decent skills, just messy. The hardest part is stretching the teflon seals then shrinking them back to size. The balls are easy to deal with also. So if your box is leaking don't be scared to try it. I used a dorman kit cheap on amazon. The steering boxes on the mini and 60 are very similar. I used all new lines. The high pressure line on the steering box and stock pump has 17mm x 1.5 threads. I used a 17mm x 1.5 to #6JIC fitting at the box and pump, then an 3/8 x 18" hydraulic line with JIC 6 swivel ends. The hydraulic line was $9 from surplus center, the fittings are about $10 at TG, Yotamasters & PSC. On a LC with saginaw you can use the same fitting on the steering box but you'd need a different fitting at the pump. I used a Hayden 403 transmission cooler and 3/8" rubber transmission line for the low pressure side, this settup could easily replace the hard line cooler on a LC too.

@orangefj45 have you ever thought about fabing up a saginaw bracket for the 22r/re. A lot of guys going with hydro assist need to use saginaw pumps but theres no real good bracket/pulley option out there. Good job on this kit, i'll be getting one whenever i get back to tinkering on my 60.

Thanks for the input and added info.

We’re a cruiser specific shop so we don’t work on a lot of mini trucks. But I doubt it’d be too difficult to come up with s sag pump mount.

Ordered this kit today, thanks Georg!

For anyone trying to understand the high pressure hose conversion, Georg is now supplying the proper standard fitting with the kit that will need to be added to the factory hose on the pump side. Looking forward to less leaks!

Thanks for the orders and ongoing support!!!

Any other Saginaw pump options work well in the FJ60 with this kit other than the Autozone pump #7023 from Duralast?

i did this conversion a while ago and enjoyed the better steering. I had a helluva time getting the fitting right, as my #7023 pump from Oreilly's came with 5/8-18 fitting instead of metric like OEM. Eventually I got the right fitting, cut the power steering hard line, put on new fitting and reflared. Got it to work without leaking.

Pump had been moaning a while, but still performing okay, so I left it in there. Well, smog pump seized up, so while replacing that, I said "hey, these pumps are warrantied, so why not swap it out while I'm in there. " So that's what I did.

put it all back together and it leaks like a sieve between high pressure line and tube nut. I take out, and my flare job previously was almost non-existent and it just didn't look right.

I thought of buying new high-pressure line and having a shop add SAE nut to new line... but I reread this thread thinking that MUD would provide. and it did.. @Rett Butler said "JTO has one that has 17 on one end and 5/8-18 on the other..."

BAM! A little pricier, but way easier than having me do it half-assed again or have a shop here (in SWCO my options are limited), and it's ordered and on the way. I'll know it's right and the fit will be perfect.

Can't wait to have quiet, smooth, non-leaking power steering again!

FWIW, we now supply the SAE fitting for the factory HP line with the kit at no extra cost. We also offer an already modified HP line for $79.

@orangefj45 - you mean the SAE fitting at no extra cost? I would have definitely ordered the modified line had it been available when I ordered. I highly recommend this to anybody else that's just now ordering.

or the fitting to go within the Saginaw Pump that then attaches to OEM HP Line. that would be even better

Thanks. It would be cool if you offered as part of your kit the fitting that goes INSIDE the Saginaw SAE equipped pumps that would allow people to use the OEM HP line with no alterations whatsoever. Seems like you should be able to remove that, and replace it with a correct for Toyota fitting.

The custom high pressure line (17mm to 5/8-18 SAE) from JT Outfitters (and now available through @orangefj45 ) worked great! Easy to install, no leaks. The PS fluid (ATF) bleeding process described in this thread went well, also.

Absolutely no leaks, and the steering reminds me of driving a '79 Chevy Caprice Classic. In a good way. Smooth, easy. responsive.

A must have piece of the kit, in my opinion, if you do this upgrade.

Sorry, just wanted to gush a bit more about how much I like having this upgrade dialed in. Parallel parked today like a lot of days. Smooth, easy, quiet, leak free with 31s.
Then, while parked I thought, " Hmm.. how many full turns do I get from stop to stop." 4 1/4 turns, that were easy to do.

Damn nice.

Just installed one for a customer. Nice kit. Used 732-2137 from RockAuto, and also Dorman 82581 cap. Got a new high pressure line, cut the fitting off. Installed supplied fitting and re-flared. Had minimal trimming to do on the stock bracket. You can see I mimicked a picture here for areas to trim, but didn’t have to. I’ll let the pics do the talking.

Thanks @orangefj45 !

I've been drawing and printing an adapter for the new PS cap to the one I pried off the TOYODA pump cap. On the 4th try I think I got it right, printed out of ABS I think it will hold up. It fits snug enough hand pressed to stay but I think I will add a little RTV silicone.

4wheelfever, I PayPal'd you money yesterday for a cap! Thanks for extending that offer to everyone here! Definitely helps complete this swap!

Just ordered my full kit from Georg, looking forward to getting this mod done! Now searching for the visual install instructions to make sure I don't screw it up...
