I recently installed this kit (the second one I've done) and am wondering about the alignment of the p/s reservoir and pulley.

The p/s pulley is flush w the end of the spindle. However, when putting a square edge across the face of the alt pulley and the p/s reservoir pulley, there's a approx. 1/4 inch offset., with the p/s pulley farther back. The pulleys are different widths, but the centerline of the each pulley still still seems off.

I had the same alignment issue on the prior install (and using an 80-series alternator) and the belt to wore/broke prematurely.

I can't see that there is an issue w the mount to the engine block or within the kit parts, so it is likely the length of the p/s pump spindle? Has anyone seen differences in power steering pumps? I need to dig up the number, but it was one of the parts recommended here...

Have you checked the alinement to the crank pulley?
A few more pics might help, specifically the ps pump and pulley.
We’ve installed these kits for 12 years now and have never had to replace a belt on any of the installs performed here at the shop.
We’ve also sold well over 300 of these kits without the issue you’re encountering.

Let’s get to them bottom of this!

Thanks for the quick reply! You're right I have not read/heard of this being a problem. I'm just now having time to try and sort it all out.

So, the alt pulley and crank pulley do seem aligned, and I've been running the truck with a belt around the alt, water pump and crank pulley to bypass the p/s pump. I have had no issues. I had crank pulley off on this truck recently to do the timing cover plate and don't see any misalignment. It all went on fine, torqued down correct. etc. (EDIT: I didn't think this was an issue since the same offset problem happened on the other install on the first truck, and that crank pulley hasn't been removed.)

I measured the width of the alu block in the mount kit thinking that could be the only way to get the p/s pump shifted farther forward. It measures 1 inch thick. I need to check the spacer on the other side. (EDIT: These are two different kits from you, I did not move one from the first truck, so that probably rules out problems here...)

As you said, I don't think it's the kit...more likely it's how I have this installed, or unique issue w the pump.

Is there a good walk through or video of the install process for the saginaw upgrade?
 
Hardest part is getting the pulley on the pump! Rent a sturdy installer tool, I broke a cheap one I bought first.

TLDR; using a 3FE alternator is causing the pulley misalignment from my previous post; Georg's kit is great! :)

More detail on this installation. I have the 3FE Alternator (80a) installed, which is the cause of this belt alignment.

With the belt installed, it is easier to see the power steering pulley on the Saginaw kit is aligned w the crank pulley. But, you can see the 3FE alternator pulley sitting just proud of those two pulleys. It's not 'terrible', and I am running w the pump for now. I had all new lines plumbed and a filter installed so wanted to try it. But, I will monitor belt wear. (I previously ran a bypass belt from the alternator to the crank pulley with no issues. )

On the 80a alternator, the plan is to either shift the pulley and fan closer to the alternator body using fewer spacers on the alt shaft (I think that it's already too close); Or, file off a little material from the inside of the front lower ear, to shift the entire alternator and pulley back, in line, w the P/S and crank pulleys.

This has been in the works for what seems to be way too long ......

We've built a few prototypes and they've been up and running for a while. Came up with is final design after collaborating with another fellow mudder Brad and then modifying that design slightly a couple of times we've finally come up with a kit we're happy with!!!!
The factory 2F ps bracket is retained and slightly modified to work as a cradle for the sag pump.
The kit costs $159.98 and consists of:
Adapter bracket, spacer and hardware
Pulley
Belt
SAE fitting for HP PS hose
And you will need the proper sag ps pump and cap. We've successfully used Autozone pump #7023 from Duralast or TruGrade. And you'll need the cap part # 82581 from Help products.
We can also supply the already modified OEM bracket for $100 but we need your bracket in exchange. If you want to to buy the bracket outright then it's $200. We have some in stock; once we modify them they're bead-blasted and then painted so they're ready to be installed.
Shipping for the kit runs $25 with or without the modified OEM bracket.
We also offer replacement high pressure hose along with a section of low pressure hose for $139.98 which has the proper fittings installed so no need for any modifications.

Installation instructions:
1) remove the factory, PS belt, pulley, pump, high-pressure line, low pressure, line and PS pump bracket.
2) at this point, you will either need to modify your existing bracket or grab the modified bracket if you purchased one from us.
3) now it’s time to locate the adapter brackets we supply, as well as the power steering pump mentioned above. This should’ve been sourced from a local auto parts store.
4) bolt the adapter bracket to the power steering pump.
5) attach the power steering pump to the modified power steering bracket with the hardware supplied in our kit.
6) install the power steering pump pulley. Please note that the pulley has to be installed with the proper tool. If you use a hammer, it will destroy the pump. And make sure that the pulley is installed in the proper orientation. The center of the pulley has a small grooved hub on the forward facing side that is utilized to remove the pulley from the pump if needed.
7) install the entire assembly back onto your engine block with the factory hardware.
8) install the new section of low pressure line as well as the modified high-pressure line. Keep in mind that if you did not purchase a modified high-pressure line from us, you will need to modify your own line. The fitting at the pump needs to be changed to a standard fitting. The metric fitting will not fit properly.
9) installed a replacement belt provided in our kit. You will notice that this belt is slightly narrower than the factory belt. The belt supplied will work perfect. Also, replacement belts are readily available at your local auto parts store.
10) add fluid to the system and go through the steps below to bleed the entire system properly.
Take your time when you bleed the system!

Easiest way:

  1. Put front axle on jack stands; to take the load off the PS system.
  2. Fill ps pump almost to the top.
  3. Start engine, run for 3-5 seconds. Shut it off.
  4. Fill pump.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until fluid level stays constant.
  6. Start engine and SLOWLY turn wheel for 3-5 seconds. Shut off.
  7. Fill pump.
  8. Repeat 6 and 7
  9. Once fluid level stays even and you can turn the wheel lock to lock you’re done.
If you let the engine run too long, the pump will cavitate and the fluid will foam up and possibly overflow. Then you’ll need to wait for all the air bubbles to disperse before adding more fluid.

Be patient, take your time.

Looking for a long-lasting pump, research indicates a new one from Borgeson is a good choice (though Turn One and Leo are the crem de la crem, but I'm after durability not high performance)

I have the recommended AutoZone Duralast parts, but I've had bad luck with AutoZone, so I want a good one ready to go on later if needed.

Is there a better pump to get when the goal is long-lasting, trouble-free repair?

Google(AI) says that the equivalent Borgeson pump is below; is that correct?

Ok, so I ordered the kit, the 7023 pump from Autozone and had Valley include the high and low pressure hoses. I am actually working with a guy that is a mechanic to put this in next weekend. Long story short, my rebuilt OEM still leaks even after a rebuild and I just gave up on it. Anyway, It looks like I need to pick up a pully install kit from autozone to press the pulley onto the shaft. Am I correct to assume that nothing bolts on to the end of the shaft after the pulley is pressed on? what holds the pulley in place?? just the tight fit??

Another question- My buddy also rebuilt my steering box replacing all the gaskets. He "thinks" the rebuilt kit came with these two brass reducers or maybe one was already installed where the high pressure line connects to the steering box. Unfortunately he could not tell me for sure I am trying to get everything answered so we dont have a show stopper end of next week. Do I need this brass reducer?? Can anyone advise??

Lastly- congrats to George. When I called to get my kit he was on his honeymoon.
