Questions ???

Stamped # on the piston rods crank ends do not match.
Cylinder
#1 #2 #3 #4
1-2 1-2 1-1 1-1.

Can anyone enlighten what the stamps mean?

Piston oilers are supposed to be 10-30 degrees from vertical. Mine appear 5-8 degrees at most!
Another piece of the puzzle?

Now on cyl 2 and 3 with low compression, I coincidentally have heat like marks on the crank pin. Caused by blow by? Should I check crankshaft for straightness? Be concerned about annealing/heat treatment effects?

any reason you can get 1mm over size pistons? seems like that would be cheaper than liners and will take care of the scoring on the walls.
The O/S pistons I have seen are around $200+ ea, plus OS Rings $100+ea, plus machining.... like $1200+++ Ouch.

I do have two other bottom ends in various states of disassembly. First one I stole the camshaft/lifters from, second I stole the head. Im going to pull the pistons and take a look.... Maybe find 4 in better condition.

The liners are like $150 for all 4 + install, bore and hone. shop budget quoted $300 to do.

Searching for a set of pistons that are in spec.....
Rusty camshaft doner

This got me diggin in my 3rd engine, the 86 that donated the cyl head. I was shying away from this one as it is a different 'generation' of 3b and not sure of compatibility with my tranny etc. But this might be the one. The 5 bearing cam shaft is significantly better than the 3 cam design.

But having 3 engines in pieces, I had to take some time to build some shelving to accommodate.

Need to find a good rebuild kit...

Some calling around today and 4 wheel auto had the full rebuild kit sitting on the shelf. Should see it in a couple days.
:princess: is gonna kill me if/when she finds out. LOL
Dans got all sorts of stuff on the shelf....very useful guy. He just might have some ideas on how to keep the missus from killing you....
Just read your entire thread, going to keep watching with eager anticipation!
Your white smoke has me wondering if i should be digging into my 3B, she's pretty smoky upon start up, and has close to 485000km on it.....

I had Dan ship to my work so that princess wont know!
At 485k (original?) it is likely getting to that point. Check compression dry then wet. If little difference you can try a valve grind but my guess is you will be best to just do the full rebuild, rather than doing it almost twice, like me:flipoff2:. Have much blowby?

yup original. No blowby, started it up today for the first time in a few weeks, took it for a 20 mile cruise, no smoke or anything today. when she hits 500,000 i think the body will be coming off and ill do a refresher on the engine. or drop in my 3b from my parts '85 with the better cam, which would allow a turbo....decisions decisions

Well the 86 block is at the machine shop for liner replacement and bore to suit new pistons. Hope to see within a week or two.... No rush = better price and usually better quality in my experience.

So clean and wire wheel and paint this time all the accessories.

And now a serious dilemma... Do I reuse my OEM MLS gasket or use the new knock off fiber gaskets?
Here is the old 2-3000 approx kms only

Here are the new gaskets that came with the kit
20170624_162926.jpg

WHICH ONES SHOULD I USE?

You are this far into it, I wouldn't cut a corner on the gaskets unless people chime in saying the brand of gasket you have is good. I'd hate to see you get this back to together and have a major issue (now or later) over something that cost so little to replace, especially when it's no more labor to do it.

Just read through the the last 5 or so pages. Intense work you've done! And on the block in the truck too. Kills me to see you had to pull it all back apart. Not nearly as deep as you but I recently pulled my 60's head and am waiting for the pickup call from the machinist. I had Jason @reevesci commend me on my willingness to dive in and gifted me a new set of valves. HUGE pat on my back. My valves were ugly, similar to yours. I was drooling over your gorgeous setup for cleaning and lapping. I attempted to hand lap but they still looked quite pitted and after some back and forth Jason offered to help me out.
I'm not pulling the pistons, crossing my fingers the light lines I see in the bores aren't too significant; I can't feel any indentation with my nails. At some point I have a donor oil pan to swap... in some ways I know it would make the most sense to pull it now before I reassemble the top end, especially after seeing your experience of doing things twice. So far on my journey I have now found things I did last year when I first got the truck that I didn't do that great and am amending as I go thru it this time with much better prep thanks to @OSS guiding me along the way via text. The folks here on mud are a godsend and I can't thank them enough for their willingness to share and teach.
Very exciting to see the videos of your test drives. Clearly you live in a gorgeous area compared to pretty yet boring CT. Glad to have found your thread, granted a different Beast from my gas powered Badass... some is enough similar to gain some great insight. Thank you!
Felicity

Cheers! Glad you are enjoying!

Well, FINALLY got my 3b back from the machine shop. I can finally begin this rebuild in time for FALL :frown:. I guess better late than never. And better than ever!

Near new again :grinpimp:

This evening, not too much progress. Little bit of prepping for paint. And got pins installed into piston assemblies.

Pre lube everything with oil, Test fit pins into new and freshly honed bushings at room temp while preheating pistons to >60C
20170817_181416.jpg

I pre installed one internal snap ring and quickly pushed with my thumbs the pin into position in the piston.

Hope to make some good progress this weekend.

Was wondering if I should drop the transmission, install to engine out of the truck, and then install both into The Beast? MAy be simpler? What u guys think???

Some more progress....

Some might call it 'ford' blue. I kinda like it.
20170818_113622.jpg

Oil cooler installed. I ended up keeping my old downward pointing oil filter as I am sure it will interfere with the turbo/exhaust setup.

For piece of mind, I plasti-gauged the new crankshaft bearings. On the bigger side of the tolerance, but all journals are well within new specs.
20170819_153648.jpg

Image typical of all journals. (spec of .030mm - .074mm). Im going to call this good, torque it up and call it a night.

Wow Man! What a pile of work you've put into that motor. She's looking real pretty though! Nice job on cleaning all those accessories and I really like the blue color.

Good luck with the rest of the build. Can't wait til you get it running again!

Loving the photos and the Ford blue.

Little more work than I originally planned! HA! But Im not one to run away from a challenge! Be that a good thing or bad... im not too sure yet.

Loving the photos and the Ford blue.

Camshaft Bearings newly honed and near new specs

Camshaft, little worn but still within spec and ready for some new action.
