I bought my tarpon from zaloos after the season ended. he used to buy blems and 2nd from wilderness systems each year (both yaks and canoes), run them in the river for the season, and sell em in Oct nov. I got mine for 350 plus tax. that was about 8 years ago.

It was cheaper for him to do that than repair the fleet

Seen lots of them with for sale signs at end of season. The Wilderness stuff must be pretty good. Zaloos rental stuff gets beat on pretty hard.

Wilderness was started here in town. They were and are still excellent boats. One of the founders of Wilderness started Native Watercraft a few years back. Those are excellent boats, and would be on the top of my list if i were starting from scratch.

My tarpon had lived most of its season in the basement at zaloos. it had a handful of trips down the river, and only a few scratches. all of the hardware, latches, bungee, etc were still in great shape.

The canoes are what sees the worst abuse, and he would have to spent lots of time and resources (or employees) patching, fixing, etc. people run headlong straight into rocks, or they get stuck and stand up in them.

If you dont mind possbly spending a few bucks on handles and bungee cord, rental boats can be a good deal, if youre picky. If you want brand new, youre going to pay dearly.

I've been itching to kayak for awhile now, and finally ordered 2 "Intex challenger K2" from Amazon for the family. They are 2 seater inflatables. I have had an Intex inflatable boat (Seahawk 4 I think it's called) for many years now and it's pretty durable, just slow as hell to row and forget about getting anywhere if there is the slightest wind.

The new kayaks arrived yesterday and tried one out right away on the Allouette river near my place. Pretty fun. Although I think I need to learn better paddling techniques as I got a lot wetter than I thought I would have just from water off the paddle.

No idea, maybe there from the original construction. Signs State nomtrespassing, good thing I don't speeek eeengleeeesh

What are those caverns for? Overflow?

Izzy is right. Used to bypass the Yadkin river while the dam was being built. Canoed in the cave back in late 80s. Then went and explored the dam, obtaining entry through an unlocked door on the backside of the dam. I'm sure I couldn't get away with that now.

Right cave goes back 50 yards, was total darkness. Left cave maybe 35. Both dead end there and no trespassing signs. Guards showed up long after we where out, but those who hesitated couldn't get back in there with guards watching.

Keefer's were thinking of going Kayaking on Friday or Saturday this weekend since the weather is nice. Not sure what the flow is, but we're thinking of:

1) Cape Fear River from Buckhorn Dam to Lillington (think it's 7 miles)
2) Cape Fear River from Lillington to Erwin (think it's 10)
3) Or possibly the Haw (end up at Haw River Ballroom and the brewery)

Pros and cons to each, we've done all 3. Cape Fear is fun becuase there's a few little rapids and play areas around Raven Rock depending on the flow and river levels..

Let us know if you'd like to join us!

Not on your list, but the Uwharrie River is flowing pretty good, this past weekend looked very tempting but I didnt bring kayaks

Reservoir Park in Southern Pines has a nice 95 acre lake. No rental boats. I forget if the sign says 'no motors' or 'no gas motors', but that's a win, either way. There is a one lane boat launch and a floating pier to tie off to. I'd like to go back here to paddle and fish next time I'm in the area. It's heavily wooded around the lake.

Do they sell cheap roof racks for the FJ60? looking to mount a tandem kayak easily/CHEAPly.

yakima 1a gutter mounts, and bars.

James, do you need them temp or perm? I can let you borrow a set for a while if you want. I've got 66 inch crossbars.

It would be temporary because I intend to sell the 60...At least that's the story I'm sticking with.

ok, i got the foam block thingies too. how soon do you want them?
